Women flood ranks of GOP

The GOP will send Capitol Hill its youngest-ever woman, 30-year-old Rep.-elect Elise Stefanik (N.Y.); its first black female Republican, Rep.-elect Mia Love (Utah); and the first female Republican senators from two states, Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.) and Joni Ernst (Iowa), who is also the first female combat veteran to be elected to the chamber.

“These were strong female candidates that had to get through tough primaries, even before the general election,” a representative for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) told The Hill. “They had great backgrounds and could go tell voters what they planned to do. They were all very impressive.”

I know. You're all stunned to learn that the NAACP is made up of hypocrites who aren't interested in Mia Love and Tim Scott.

At this point, most of us are aware that the NAACP is little more than a well-organized race-baiting organization. They yell "racism" in order to keep black voters loyal to the Democrats and collect gobs of cash to support the effort. That's basically all they're about.

Still, it seems that there are some poor, unfortunate, souls who've convinced themselves that the organization is interested in the actual "advancement" of "colored people." Since there were two historic races that were won by African-American Republicans on Tuesday night, these poor saps thought that maybe, just maybe, the NAACP would take a second to notice.

There is no mention of Tim Scott or Mia Love’s historic wins this election cycle in the statement. As you can see, it’s mostly about the Voting Rights Act.

Townhall has reached out again via email to see if the NAACP will like to specifically comment on Love and Scott’s wins last Tuesday, which made history.

MEET OUR REPUBLICAN WOMEN CANDIDATES: MIA LOVE, Utah

After a competitive election in 2012, Mia Love is back again as the Republican nominee for the congressional seat in Utah’s 4th District. In the 2012 election, Love faced longtime Democrat incumbent Jim Matheson, losing by less than 1% of the vote. Now that Matheson is retiring, Love will face Democratic candidate Doug Owens. If elected, she will be the first African American female Republican elected to Congress, a major feat for the Republican Party.

Love and her husband, Jason, and three children reside in Sarasota Springs. Working her way through local government, she has served as a city councilwoman and mayor of Sarasota Springs.

As a mother, Love values the importance of education and advocates for the return of control of education back to the local level. Believing in a limited role of government, she opposes Obamacare on the grounds that it is not affordable, not sustainable, and greatly increases the scope and size of the federal government. Love believes that the federal government should reduce spending, and furthermore proposes the implementation of a simpler tax code and lowering of tax rates.

When asked why she is a conservative, Love says, “I believe conservative values are what lift people out of poverty. I believe conservative values lead to the greatest amount of prosperity for the greatest number of people.”

Why I’m a Republican

◼ Last year I was invited to speak at the University of Chicago Law School. During the question and answer session, a black female student asked me a pointed question: “In today’s America, how can a black woman be a Republican?” - Mia Love

...Fiscal discipline, limited government, personal responsibility: These are the values that have made America a strong and free country, a shining city on a hill that countless millions throughout history have sacrificed everything to come to.

I believe conservative values are what lift people out of poverty. I believe conservative values lead to the greatest amount of prosperity for the greatest number of people. I believe conservative values allow immigrants like my parents to come here with nothing but $10 in their pockets, and then within one generation witness their daughter serve as her city’s mayor and possibly—hopefully—as her district’s representative in Congress.

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King’s Dream

My favorite line from that speech is when Dr. King declared the dream he had for his children: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” I do not believe Dr. King was asking for a handout. The Fight Begins Now: Mid-Term 2014

◼ The big headlines out of CPAC this year, as usual, were focused on main-stage speeches by potential Republican presidential candidates for 2016, but that’s still three years away and conservatives cannot afford to look past next year’s mid-term election. - The Other McCain

So, to me, ◼ one of the most important events of this week’s conference was this:
Utah’s 4th District — where Republican Mia Love came within 800 votes of unseating Democrat Rep. Jim Matheson last November — tops the list of more than 40 Democrat-held seats targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) in next year’s mid-term elections.

The fight by Republicans to recapture the Senate will likely overshadow the GOP’s battle to hold onto — and perhaps expand — their House majority in 2014. Some readers may remember how hard it was to get attention for Republican challengers in 2010, which is why I want to start early trying to focus attention on these key races for next year. The 2016 beauty pageant must be viewed as a dangerous distraction from the real fight at hand.

The NRCC chairman seems like a solid, smart man with a business background who can be counted on to run an effective campaign for 2014. The NRCC’s digital coordinator Nick Martelli was savvy enough to arrange a blogger briefing at CPAC, and Walden said that online messaging will be an “integral” component of their plans for next year’s mid-terms. Speaker of the US House of Representatives John Boehner (R-Ohio) is in Utah on Wednesday for events at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City.

Former GOP presidential candidate John McCain (R-Ariz.) will participate in a public town hall meeting in West Valley City on Thursday.

Condoleezza Rice, who served as Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, will be in Utah in early September.

Love is running against Rep. Jim Matheson, who has served six terms for Utah’s Second Congressional District.
