Republican-of-the-Year Dinner is SUNDAY, April 28th

Humboldt County’ s Republican Central Committee will honor civic and poliical activist Joe Bonino at its 21st annual Republican-of-Year Dinner, Sunday, April 28.

Bonino lost a close election for Eureka City Council last November. He was a member of the party’s Central Committee from 1996-2010, including several years as treasurer.

A Eureka resident since 1985, Bonino has been a volunteer with the Humane Socity of Humboldt County, the Clarke Museum, Easter Seals, Sons & Daughters of Italy and the City of Eureka’s Finance Advisory Committee.

Professionally, he has been with the Humboldt State Universtiy’s payroll departments since 1992.

According to Republican County Chairman Todd Walker, the party will also honor six Volunteers of the Year at the dinner. They are: Art Chase, Carole Del Biaggio, Michael Hutson, Fern Miller, Patricia Newell and Dean Nielsen. “They comprise the volunteer team that staffs our county headquarters month-in and month-out,” Walker said.

Invitations are in the mail for the dinner which will be held at the Ingomar Club.

◼ PRESS: Ward Connerly to address Humboldt County Republicans

AUTHOR, CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER CONNERLY TO ADDRESS REPUBLICAN DINNER

Ward Connerly, author and leader of efforts to require equal treatment of all in public education, employment and contracting, will be the keynote speaker at the Humboldt County Republican Party’s Reagan Centennial/Republican-of-the-Year dinner on Thursday, June 23.

As a member of the University of California Board of Regents, Connerly led a majority of the board to vote to end UCs use of race as a means of admissions. He then served as chairman of the California Civil Rights Initiative campaign (Prop. 209 in 1996), which passed by 55-to-45 percent. He led efforts to pass similar state initiatives in Michigan, Nebraska and Washington.
He is president of the American Civil Rights Institute, a non-profit organization the objective of which is to “educate the public about the need to move beyond race and, specifically, racial and gender preferences.”

He is the author of “Creating Equal: My Fight Against Race Preferences” and a new book, “Lessons From My Uncle James: Beyond Skin Color to the Content of Our Character.”

He describes it as “one part memoir, one part moral guide” that sets forth “a new starting point for the discussion about character that America must have in order to move beyond race for good.”

At the dinner, civic leader Dennis Hunter will be honored as Republican of the Year. He served four terms as an elected board member of the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation & Conservation District; served on the Redwood Region Economic Development Commission from 1992-2007 and on several community boards including Easter Seals and the Greater Eureka Chamber of Commerce.

Honored as Volunteer of the Year will be Karen Brooks, a businesswoman, wife and mother who became active in politics for the first time in 2010 as the party’s nominee for the First Assembly District seat. The program also will include a centennial tribute to the late President Ronald Reagan.

“We are very pleased to honor two fine Humboldt County citizens and to have such a compelling speaker as Ward Connerly,” said Peter Hannaford, chairman. Invited dinner guests will gather at the Ingomar Club for the event.

Republican Volunteer of the Year Promotes Membership Drive

The April Republican of the Year event at the Ingomar Club brought recognition to Colleen Hedrick, President of Humboldt Republican Women Federated (HRWF) when she was named Republican Volunteer of the Year.

Hedrick, currently in her second term of office, cited the strength, capabilities, and ―drop of a hat support of the club‘s membership as essential to the success of the organization. She said the organization is in initial stages of membership enrollment and aiming to maintain its position as one of the top two clubs in California in its member count which typically exceeds 250 members.

The club ̳s emphasis on members ̳ consistent pursuit of functioning as activists by contacting those in government to question, protest, and sometimes to praise goes along with the organization ̳s primary purpose to keep members informed, Hedrick said. Educational purposes extended to the community through the purchase of books for fifth and eighth grade classrooms and for school libraries. Further community services include food drives, collections for local women‘s shelters, donations to the military, phone banks to get out the vote, informative programs, and presentation of candidates. Hedrick said ,―These actions were among those that brought the club the Diamond Award which is the highest award given to a Republican Women‘s Club.

Club goals named by Hedrick include the establishment of a scholarship program, a visitation project for care homes, helping the formation of a Southern Humboldt Republican Women‘s Club, and continuing community outreach. She added that the club will welcome registered Republicans and those who wish to be registered as new members of the club. Annual dues are $30. Interested persons may call Terry Roberts, 599-3255.
