Senator Mike Lee has just introduced a bill to defund President Obama’s Power Grab

Senator Mike Lee has just introduced a bill to defund President Obama’s Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing regulation

"Every American should be free to choose where to live, and every community should be free to zone its neighborhoods and compete for new residents according to its distinct values. The diversity of America’s neighborhoods – from dense cities to wide-open rural communities to suburbs in between – is a treasure that we need to preserve. We don’t need a National Zoning Board. Washington should let Americans "govern local."

...Yet it would be foolish for local governments to rely on congressional efforts to defund AFFH. For now, localities wishing to avoid a de facto federal takeover need to consider turning down HUD grant money. Sen. Lee’s press release on his AFFH defunding bill rightly notes problems in HUD’s Community Development Block Grant program (CDBG). But there’s no time to wait for reform. Localities need to consider turning down HUD money right now.

A new website, Obamazone.org, provides a way for you to find out what your locality already accepts in the way of CDBG money. The site features news about opposition to AFFH and helpful videos as well. While CDBG is the largest HUD grant program by far, it’s important to keep in mind that there are several other smaller HUD grant programs, and taking even a dollar from any one of them leaves a locality vulnerable to de facto federal takeover.

Turning down HUD money is the smart play right now. If AFFH stands, however, it will not do as a long-term solution. The citizens of every locality in the country are taxed to fund HUD. Turning down the grants picks their pockets. If AFFH stands, efforts to cut funding for CDBG will have to begin. For now, however, the safest play is to turn down HUD money and press Congress to pass the Gosar and Lee bills defunding or canceling AFFH.

Undercover investigator David Daleiden tells CNN the reason StemExpress is trying to suppress the video he took of its CEO on May 22 is because the company doesn’t want anyone to know it bought whole intact dead babies from Planned Parenthood.

5 Reasons Congress Must Reject Obama’s Iran Deal

The GOP is becoming the party of ideas again

Right now, the Democratic Party is selling pretty much the same ideas it was selling in the 1960s. Higher minimum wage! More environmental regulation! Higher taxes on the rich! More entitlements! It likes to tell itself that America's changing demographics are setting the stage for a more ambitious agenda. But it's really the same story all over again — the party is becoming overconfident and is about due for a rude awakening.

Planned Parenthood backtracks hack story

...Later Thursday, the original message was taken down and replaced with a note that made no mention of the hack at all. "Our normal site is currently undergoing maintenance," it said. "Below you will find information to help you find a Planned Parenthood health center, book an appointment, and get involved with Planned Parenthood." Instead of redirecting users to another page on the site, the button now provides a phone number for donations.

As of Thursday afternoon, Planned Parenthood had not removed its Facebook post on the hack which says that "today, anti-abortion extremist hackers brought down plannedparenthood.org."

The alleged hack comes in the wake of several undercover videos that reveal high-level Planned Parenthood executives trafficking fetal organs and just days after Planned Parenthood hired crisis PR firm SKDKnickerbocker.

A temporary restraining order has been issued preventing an anti-abortion group from releasing any video of leaders of a California company that provides fetal tissue to researchers. The group is the same one that previously shot viral covert video of a Planned Parenthood leader discussing the sale of aborted fetuses for research.

The Los Angeles Superior Court order issued Tuesday prohibits the Center for Medical Progress from releasing any video of three high-ranking StemExpress officials taken at a restaurant in May. It appears to be the first legal action prohibiting the release of a video from the organization.

The Center for Medical Progress has released three surreptitiously recorded videos to date that have riled anti-abortion activists. The Senate is expected to vote before its August recess on a Republican effort to bar federal aid to Planned Parenthood in the aftermath of the videos’ release.

In a statement Wednesday, center leader David Daleiden said StemExpress was using “meritless litigation” to cover up an “illegal baby parts trade.”

MARTIN PERETZ: The Democrat Party is on the Edge of the Abyss

Two of the most powerful members of the Democratic Party, former and current senators from New York, now hold the fate of the putative deal with Iran in their hands. Because they alone can overturn it, this means that presumptive presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and presumptive Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer carry a heavy burden that will deeply affect their personal reputations and, most probably, the trustworthiness of the Democrats in foreign policy for at least a generation....

...U.S. sanctions do matter, and their continuation (in the absence of reasonable satisfaction of congressional conditions) will affect Iranian calculations. Moreover, the uncertainty created in the Iranian leadership will restore some leverage to the next American president. If Schumer and Clinton instead passively capitulate to the flawed approach of the administration, they will bear their full share of responsibility for the substance of the deal and the consequences for their party.

THE DONALD’S LOG CABIN

Tippecanoe and Donald Trump too, you might say. - Peter Hannaford/American Spectator 6/23/15

In announcing his presidential candidacy, Donald Trump used his patented carnival barker’s routine. After that he took off for New Hampshire to actually campaign.

At his first stop he drew a good-sized crowed. After his pitch, reporters asked some of those attending what they thought of Trump as a candidate. One man told an interviewer, “He says it like it is. I like the fact he started at the bottom and built his success himself.”

The legendary rags-to-riches story? Not exactly. Donald Trump was the son of Fred Trump, a well-established and wealthy real estate developer in New York City. His company, Elizabeth Trump and Son, specialized in middle-class rental housing in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Unglamorous, but it filled a need.

After some earlier school difficulties, young Donald was sent to the New York Military Academy to shape up, which he did. There, he earned academic honors and played on the football, soccer, and baseball teams. He then spent two years at Fordham University followed by two, and a degree, at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, which at the time was one of the few universities with a real estate degree program.

Donald started at the bottom (if you consider an assignment from his father “the bottom”) before he graduated from Penn. Father Fred, sensing that Donald had a real knack for the business, asked him to come up with a plan to turn around a foreclosed apartment complex in Cincinnati. He did, and the company sold the project for a solid profit a few years later.

“The Donald” was off and running. In 1971, his father turned over control of the company to Donald who renamed it The Trump Organization. From this point on he embarked on a long series of projects, nearly all of them successful. He built numerous apartment and office towers, hotels, casinos, golf courses, “reality” television shows and he owns the Miss Universe beauty pageant.

Back to that fan in New Hampshire who admires Trump for pulling himself up by his bootstraps—so the speak. Therein may lie the formula for campaign success. Trump, who brags endlessly about everything else, could begin bragging about his humble beginnings (part-time job to put himself through college) and his determination (real) to succeed.

There is a political precedent for this sort of borrowed personal history. In the first half of the 19th century it was popular among politicians to have log cabin roots. That is, they were born in one or at least their parents were. It was true of Lincoln, but not of some others. Take one of the most successful users, William Henry Harrison, the 9th president, elected in 1840. He was governor of the large Indiana Territory (now several states) after winning the Battle of Tippecanoe over area tribes.

After the Whigs nominated him a Baltimore newspaper controlled by Democrats disparaged him, writing that he should be given “a barrel of hard cider and pension of two thousand a year and… he will sit the remainder of his days in a log cabin…” This gave him the humble-beginnings touch he needed. In fact, he was born at Berkeley Plantation, a large spread on the James River in Virginia. It had been in his family since 1726 and his grandfather was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Harrison’s supporters buried that “elitist” background. All campaign signs and badges emblazoned with a log cabin. Every headquarters was called a “log cabin,” with the latch string out and a hard cider on tap.

The Democrats’ candidate, Martin Van Buren, of Kinderhook, New York, was always impeccably tailored and was thus depicted as a dandy against plain, old Log Cabin Harrison, who won.

So there it is, a winning strategy for The Donald.

While avoiding the hefty double-digit premium hikes that have been proposed in a number of other states counts as a victory, many customers may not celebrate when they find out what's happened to their deductibles

Covered California, the state's ObamaCare exchange, trumpeted the news on Monday that average premiums are set to rise a mild 4% in 2016.

While avoiding the hefty double-digit premium hikes that have been proposed in a number of other states counts as a victory, many customers may not celebrate when they find out what's happened to their deductibles.

That particularly applies to people seeking the lowest-cost bronze-level coverage. In 2016, those plans will carry a medical deductible of $6,000 and a separate drug deductible of $500. In 2015, bronze plans in California had a $5,000 deductible covering both medical services and prescription drugs. (After the deductible is met, bronze coverage will cap prescription costs at $500 per month in 2016, which has been viewed as excessive by advocacy groups.)

The combined 2016 deductible of $6,500, then, will be 30% higher than in 2015, though some other changes to the standardized plan might take some of the sting out of the increase....

CLINTON BIMBO ERUPTIONS COME HOME TO ROOST?

Bill Clinton sexual-harassment accuser Kathleen Willey has launched an anti-Hillary Clinton website titled "A Scandal A Day."

The site is partially aimed at recruiting other women who may have been assaulted by the former president.

Calling Hillary Clinton "without a doubt the most corrupt politician that this nation has ever seen," Willey announced the launch of her new website Sunday on "Aaron Klein Investigative Radio," broadcast on New York's AM 970 The Answer and Philadelphia’s NewsTalk 990 AM and online....

Willey said that while she was writing her 2007 book, "Target: Caught in the Crosshairs of Bill and Hillary Clinton," she was anonymously contacted by other women who claimed to have been sexually assaulted by Bill Clinton.

She told Klein the women who called her "were afraid to talk to me because they were afraid my phone was being tapped. They didn’t give me their names. They gave me incidences, time, places, where things happened and what happened."

She continued: "And frankly I was pretty horrified by some of the things they told me. And they were scared to death of Hillary Clinton. And I don’t blame them."

Get the whole story on how sexual harassment at the hands of Bill Clinton turned into bullying at the hands of the Clinton administration in Willey's book "Target: Caught in the Crosshairs of Bill and Hillary Clinton."

“She is the one that everybody should be scared of. All of these women. Hillary Clinton is without a doubt the most corrupt human being, the most corrupt politician that this nation has ever seen, man or woman."...

No harsh words for the people who tweeted this or lead chants of “death to America,” Mr. President?

How Russia threatens Internet freedom

Claiming to ‘protect’ privacy, it grants ‘security’ access to customer data - Peter Hannaford/Washington Times 7/9/15

Beginning in September a new Russian law — the Personal Data Law — will require international Internet firms with Russian customers to process and store data about them on Russian servers.

Ostensibly, this is intended to protect Russian citizens’ privacy. In fact, its purpose is to gain government access to that privacy and to cramp the competition of international Internet companies.

By forcing the likes of Google, Facebook, Twitter, Apple and Microsoft to store personal communications and data of their Russian customers inside Russia, the country’s security services will have immediate access to that information.

Paranoia apparently played a role in the legislation. Russian leader Vladimir Putin said in an April television talk program, “The Internet began when [it] appeared as a special CIA project and is still being developed that way.” Mr. Putin has also referred to it as a CIA “front” and that nothing coming from the Americans can be trusted.

Originally, the law was to take effect in January; however, Internet-freedom advocates raised such a rumpus that the date was pushed out to Sept. 1.

The law will harm Russia’s estimated 76 million Internet users. For example, it will disrupt travel planning of those who rely on online services such as international airline ticketing, hotel bookings and payment — even visa services.

The law will also hurt the already-weakened Russian economy, according to a new report by the European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE). It estimates the law will cut $5.7 billion off the country’s gross domestic product.

ECIPE’s report states, “Investments in the Russian economy would drop by 1.4 percent, with considerable effects on employment . It is unlikely that losses of such scale could be compensated and offset by a few jobs created in [Russian] data processing.”

If the non-Russian companies now providing these services were to comply with the law and move their Russian data to in-country servers, the cost would have to be passed on to their customers. And there may not be enough time between now and September for these countries to rent Russian servers, let alone build new ones.

Several Western Internet companies have already decided to leave what had been a growing market. Microsoft began the move with the announcement it would move its Skype development office from Moscow to Prague. Adobe has ceased its Russian operations.

The popular music-streaming service Spotify, based in Sweden, has canceled plans to launch a Russian service. The Russian business daily RBK cites as the reasons the new Personal Data Law, along with Russia’s declining economy and ruble.

Google, while insisting it is still committed to its Russian users, has announced it is closing its engineering office in Moscow. The new law was not mentioned in its announcement, but must have figured strongly in this decision.

All these companies have had to weigh the cost of converting to this new mandate in relation to present and potential revenue. There is the cost of segregating Russian data from the rest; the cost of renting a new batch of servers; and the time- and labor-consuming cost of software reprogramming.

The office of the United States Trade Representative says of the Russian Personal Data Law that it would “affect a broad range of cross-border services.”

This law can be seen as an extension of the Kremlin’s strategy to clamp down on free speech. Ever since the arrival of Edward Snowden in Moscow, after his theft and publication of classified U.S. government data, the Russian government has been steadily restricting media freedom. It has banned foreign interests from obtaining majority ownership of any mass medium and is developing new laws to extend restrictions on “promoting extremism” to extend to bloggers as well as news websites and publications.

FIORINA ON PLANNED PARENTHOOD VIDS: YOU NEVER CARED ABOUT ROMNEY’S HEAVILY EDITED VIDEO

On “Fox News Sunday,” former Hewlett-Packard CEO and Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina had a heated debate with the EMILY’s List Vice President Jess McIntosh about the recent undercover videos that exposed Planned Parenthood doctors discussing the price of fetal tissue.

...Fiorina continued, “Once again, I’m pro-life as you know but there are plenty of pro-choice women who are horrified by this as they should be. And by the way, after hours honestly. The fact that these officials can sit here swilling their wine, eating their salad, laughing over getting a Lamborghini and talk about specimens of fetal tissue, I find horrifying and the majority of Americans do as well.”

When McIntosh accused Fiorina of playing politics she said, “For heaven’s sake, the left side of the aisle politicians are involved all the time. EMILY’s list is involved in politics every single day and consistently EMILY’s list lobbies for pro-abortion candidates. There’s no justification anymore for federal funding of Planned Parenthood.”
