“[T]hat’s the famous line where he basically says, ‘I am going to raise the rate, even if it decreases the amount of revenue,’” Krauthammer said. “This is insane. The purpose of taxation is to raise revenue and to pay for stuff the government has to do. That’s the only reason the government swipes your money.”

Krauthammer: Obama’s Buffett rule push ‘an embarrassment,’ ‘so shameless,’ ‘deceptive’ - Jeff Poor/The Daily Caller

“It’s literally incredible,” Krauthammer said. “It’s almost an embarrassment. It’s so shameless. If you were to collect the Buffett tax for the next 250 years, that’s longer than the life of this republic, you will not have covered the deficit — Obama’s deficit — for 2011. You collect it for another 250 years, so we’re now in the year 2612, and you’ve covered 2011 and 2012, and you need to cover only 498 other years of deficits.”

The underlying policy goal of putting the Buffett rule in place, he explained, is to raise the capital gains tax, Krauthammer said, and Obama has been less than up-front about that.

“This is a preposterous statement and he knows it is,” he continued. “Also on growth, it is equally deceptive. What the tax is, it’s a doubling of the capital gains tax. It’s disguised, but that’s the reason why the Buffett rates are lower, it’s the capital gains rate and it’s lower than the rate for normal income. So he doubles it.”

“The reason that’s not a good idea is because when you double the rate, you actually decrease the amount that the Treasury receives. And you decrease the growth because you are shrinking the pool of capital that is out there that people can invest and hire other people. The reason that we had an economic boom after the Kennedy tax cuts and the Reagan cuts, 20 years later, it’s precisely that they cut rates and particularly that they cut capital gains rates.”

TEA PARTY FORCES PRIMARY FOR MULTI-TERM INCUMBENT ORRIN HATCH

The challenge to Hatch has been seen as a litmus test for the influence of the tea party movement who, in 2009 upended the careers of several establishment Republicans including Mike Castle in Delaware, Charlie Crist in Florida and Bob Bennett in Utah.

Nadia Lockyer to resign from Alameda supervisor post - Sacramento Bee

In a statement issued late Friday, Nadia Lockyer said she could no longer balance being a mother and county supervisor with her recovery from addiction and dealing with the "aftermath of interpersonal violence."

She cited both Mother's Day and National Crime Victims' Rights Week in her announcement. The California Department of Justice, where Bill Lockyer previously served as attorney general, is still investigating Nadia Lockyer's allegation that she was assaulted in February by her lover in a Newark hotel but has not filed charges.

"Today, for my child, and in the spirit of Mother's Day and National Victims Rights' Week, I hereby announce my resignation from the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, in order that I may focus on the well-being of my child, recovery from chemical dependence and interpersonal violence, and transitioning to work in the private sector," she stated.

Bill Lockyer issued his own statement later today: "I fully support Nadia's decision to step down as county supervisor and focus on completing her recovery and caring for our son. She has worked hard and well for her district. But the last year took a great toll on Nadia. It's best for her, best for Diego and best for our family that she leave public office."

Obama Sees Steep Dropoff in Cash From Major Donors

President Obama’s re-election campaign is straining to raise the huge sums it is counting on to run against Mitt Romney, with sharp dropoffs in donations from nearly every major industry forcing it to rely more than ever on small contributions and a relative handful of major donors. - Nicholas Confessore & Derek Willis/New York Times

But:
At the moment, Obama enjoys a 10-1 financial advantage over Romney - HotAir

A nasty primary battle between Romney and his GOP rivals took a financial toll on his presidential campaign, which raised $12.6 million in March and left Romney with about $10 million in the bank by month’s end. All told, Obama and the Democratic Party raised a combined $53 million in donations during that period, while Romney with his party pulled in about half of that.

Still, an anticipated fire hose of cash from major Republican “super” political committees and the Republican Party is likely to bring some financial parity to the general election, for which Romney only recently started collecting donations. Super PACs like American Crossroads and its nonprofit arm, Crossroads GPS, raised $100 million this election cycle, and the groups plan to flood the airwaves in coming months with ads critical of Obama…

Obama’s fundraising advantage puts him at a less-than-solid position when compared with the tens of millions of dollars the sister Crossroads groups have amassed so far. During the last six months of 2011 alone, GPS brought in $28 million from only a few dozen major donors, recent tax filings show. Crossroads has said it plans to raise more than $300 million to beat Obama.

THE THIRD GUN

NEW BOOK CLAIMS FBI COVER UP OF THIRD GUN IN MURDER OF BORDER PATROL AGENT - CJ Ciaramella/Washington Free Beacon

The Department of Justice is using the liberal “watchdog” group Media Matters for America to deflect questions about the Fast and Furious scandal, including those regarding a gun that might have been used in the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent.

A new book raises questions as to whether the FBI hid the existence of a weapon recovered at the scene of murdered U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. Conservative commentator and author Katie Pavlich lays out evidence she says points to a FBI cover-up to protect a confidential informant in her recently released book, Fast and Furious: Barack Obama’s Bloodiest Scandal and Its Shameless Cover-up,

In response to an inquiry from the Free Beacon, a Justice Department spokeswoman said in an email that she “was told to direct your questions to the FBI, and also to provide you with a link to this story: http://mediamatters.org/research/201204190011”

The link was to a story at the George Soros-funded Media Matters for America supposedly refuting many of Pavlich’s claims. Media Matters is a partisan organization whose founder, David Brock, is also running a pro-Obama super PAC.

...The investigation of Fast and Furious revealed that at least six FBI informants were involved in the operation, as well as an unknown number of DEA informants. Pavlich claims in her book that a confidential source told her the FBI hid the third gun from evidence because it was linked to a confidential informant or the brother of the informant.

“The reason they’re covering up the third gun is because it could lead to the confidential informant,” Pavlich said. “They’re protecting him at the cost of justice to Brian Terry and his family. I am not an expert on what confidential informants are allowed to get away with, but I guarantee they’re not allowed to kill federal agents.”

It's not just the entitlements. Everywhere you look in the bloated federal leviathan, all is waste, all is excess.

Hookers bring Secret Service to its knees - Mark Steyn/OC Register

...I've written before about the U.S. government's motorcade culture. Just last month, it cost U.S. taxpayers half-a-million bucks to fly Obama and David Cameron to Dayton, Ohio to pretend to enjoy a basketball game. I've attended previous "Summits of the Americas" and G7 meetings and other international confabs, and always heard the same story wearily retailed by representatives of the host nation – that the money-no-object Yanks are flying in a bigger and more disruptive presidential entourage than everybody else put together. At this point, the local official usually rolls his eyes, and mostly, but not always, leaves the thought unspoken:

"Americans! What do you expect?" The Queen routinely turns down requests from visiting U.S. presidents to reinforce the garden walls and replace the windows of Buckingham Palace – for an overnight stay. When the U.S. was the richest country on earth, the mad excess used to impress in a crude kind of way: If you've got it, flaunt it. Now it's the Brokest Nation in History: America hasn't got it, but still flaunts it; which is kind of pathetic....

America's Crisis of Character

The nation seems to be on the wrong track, and not just economically. - Peggy Noonan/Wall St. Journal

People in politics talk about the right track/wrong track numbers as an indicator of public mood. This week Gallup had a poll showing only 24% of Americans feel we're on the right track as a nation. That's a historic low. Political professionals tend, understandably, to think it's all about the economy—unemployment, foreclosures, we're going in the wrong direction. I've long thought that public dissatisfaction is about more than the economy, that it's also about our culture, or rather the flat, brute, highly sexualized thing we call our culture.

Now I'd go a step beyond that. I think more and more people are worried about the American character—who we are and what kind of adults we are raising.

Every story that has broken through the past few weeks has been about who we are as a people. And they are all disturbing.

A Message from the CFRW President

Dear CFRW Members,

Karen Atteberry and Roseann Slonsky-Breault, thank you for a fantastic Advocacy.

Our attendance at Advocacy this year was sparse compared to past years. Thank you to those who attended our 37th Advocacy this week. The response has been outstanding not only from the members, but from students. Many students who have been to Advocacy in the past stated this was the most outstanding. Thank you Allison Olson and your committee for educating our students on how to run a campaign.

Our speakers touched on subjects important for this coming election. Look for us on "You Tube".

We hope for those able to attend, you will put this important meeting on your calendars for next year. We will be at the Sheraton in 2013 and have discussed future Advocacies in other parts of the state.

We only have less than 2 months to prepare for our first "Open Primary Election". We need to make sure we are strongly working for Republican candidates to make it on the ballot. Remember the top 2 candidates with the most votes move onto the General Election in November. If we each work hard to get five committed voters for our Republican candidates we will start to make a change in the State Legislature. We CANNOT let the Dems get a Super Majority in the Senate.

We no longer set the table or clean the table. WE ARE AT THE TABLE.

You are the best of the best.
Carol Hadley

Eureka Chamber Music Series 19th season
First time in our area for this group, welcome them!

George Zimmerman has been chosen to serve as a gladiator in the circus that distracts a bankrupt nation from the criminal folly of its leaders, large and small. He has been assigned white team colors, had an NRA badge pinned to his lapel, and is being shoved out into the stadium while the lunatic mob howls for blood. The Emperor of Hope and Change has already made the thumbs down gesture, the courtiers are rushing out to fix the match.

We Are All George Zimmerman - Sultan Knish

...We aspire to behave the way that George Zimmerman did, to contribute to our communities, to defy the conventional wisdom and speak out when we see wrongdoing. We believe that all that is needed for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing. And we are only a misstep away from being George Zimmerman, from doing the wrong thing, from intervening in the wrong fight, drawing the wrong cartoon or saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, a heartbeat away from appearing at the bar of the kangaroo court of stage managed public opinion.

In our own way we are all George Zimmerman. We think that society should be moral and rational, and that people should do the right thing. But that's not what it is. It's an insane braying donkey's laugh as the thieves, large and small, rob the people blind and then muscle them into a lynch mob to go after some handy victim. It's George today, it will be someone else tomorrow. Maybe someone who even deserves it. But it won't be the people destroying the country, because they're the ones leading the mob....

The very randomness of choosing Zimmerman, the contempt for the basic facts of the case, has become part of the message. The message is the same. The facts don't matter. The decision making process doesn't matter. Leave your evidence and your Burke quotations at home and watch how the wheels spin, the gears grind and the blood flows. The message is that the system is absolute and there is no escape.

This is evil. It is the very essence of evil. It is an evil that Zimmerman could not have seen coming or understood when he was out patrolling his community. It's an evil that is all around us. We can catch glimpses of it on the evening news, in the sneers of anchormen, the practiced smiles of politicians, it's there in Angela Corey's helpless grin, it's there in the mountains of paperwork, the lines of tiny print, the lines of people waiting at bulletproof windows, the morality mobs forming up digitally for the next victim to string up, the next popular opinion to enforce, the next skull to crush.

The beast that is doing its best to swallow up Zimmerman knows no facts or truths, it has no virtues, only goals. It cares nothing for what he did or did not do. Its only goal is to swallow him whole. It has eyes made of cameras, teeth made of guns, network cables for guts, a mind made of slogans and a nervous system that always needs stimulation. The beast may fail in its task, but it will let out a brief howl and move on to the next victim....

After violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats have accused Republicans of wanting to take away your Social Security. And the worst part is uninformed citizens believe it!

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent ‘Trust Fund’ and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate.

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?
A: The Democratic Party.

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?
A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the ‘tie-breaking’ deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US.

Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?
A: Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments! The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!

"Teaching as a Subversive Activity": The Theory of Political Indoctrination - Zombietime

Last weekend I visited the U.C. Berkeley campus and on a whim attended a lecture with the provocative title "Teaching as a Subversive Activity — Revisited."

Because this was a presentation aimed at education insiders only, the lecturer, retired professor H. Douglas Brown from S.F. State, seemed perfectly willing to let the cat out of the bag about political indoctrination on college campuses. Fortunately, I had my trusty camera with me, so I was able not only to snap a few pictures but also record several key portions of his speech, which I found so eye-opening that I felt the general public deserved to hear it as well.

...Let it be noted that Professor H. Douglas Brown is no wild-eyed extremist; in fact, he's rather bland and respectable and not the most thrilling of speakers, as you will soon hear. But that's what made his presentation so disturbing: radical and self-admittedly "subversive" attitudes that affect the future of society are discussed with matter-of-fact nonchalance. The main drawback of Professor Brown's verbal style (at least from my point of view) is that he often resorts to the academics' tried-and-true escape hatch, which is to rephrase statements as questions, so as to have plausible deniability if later confronted. Thus, for example, instead of just flatly saying something like "We should indoctrinate students with leftist ideologies," he asks "Should we indoctrinate students with leftist ideologies?" and only after five minutes of talking in circles eventually concludes "Yes."

Drill down into the numbers of the latest CBS poll and there are ominous signs for Obama. Only 33 percent of Americans believe the economy is moving in the right direction. A mere 16 percent feel they are getting ahead financially. Some 38 percent think their situation will get worse if Obama is re-elected, 26 percent think it will get better.

Barack Obama's re-election bid is already in deep trouble - Toby Harnden/Mail Online

...If you viewed all this solely through the prism of media coverage and listened just to Washington pundits, you'd conclude that Obama has about an 80 percent chances of victory. In reality, his chances are much closer to 50:50, perhaps even with Romney holding an advantage (though many things can and will happen in six months).

This cognitive dissonance is partly because of a liberal tilt but also because most reporters and talking heads live in bubbles of comfortable affluence insulated from the economic pain most Americans are facing.

Even without factoring in the likely negative political impact of, say, Obamacare being struck down by the Supreme Court in June, Obama's re-election bid is already in deep trouble.

Only a fool would underestimate Obama's campaign machine, his ability to raise money and the fact that he remains personally likeable to a majority of Americans despite the state of the country. Anyone who argues at this stage that Obama is doomed to defeat is deluding themselves.

But the reality of this campaign is that it is likely to be brutal, very close - and could well result in Mitt Romney becoming the 45th President of the United States next January 20th.

200 days to go before the election

Candidates for president, House and Senate have 200 days left to make their case before voters cast their ballots in November. - The Hill

Jobs and the economy continue to dominate the agenda as both candidates present their ideas to voters. Speaking at a shuttered drywall factory on Thursday in Lorain, Ohio, Romney said he expected Obama to continue to attack his record as a successful businessman.

"You will see him attack success day in and day out. And one thing you know is if you attack success, you're going to have less of it,” Romney said. “This is a president who is more intent on punishing people than getting people back to work.”

In the Senate, Democrats are working feverishly to keep from losing more than three seats, which would hand control of the upper chamber to Republicans (if Obama is reelected).

There is nothing shameful about shattering the left's defining fraudulent narrative -- which was promoted again this week by myth-making first lady Michelle Obama -- that the president has "brought us out of the dark and into the light."

No More "Mr. Obama Is a Nice Guy" - Michelle Malkin at Townhall

There is a reflexive desire among a certain species of moderate Republicans to be perceived as "civil" by liberal opponents who believe that the mere existence of free-market, limited-government conservatism is an indecent affront to humankind. All aboard the U.S.S. Lost Cause.
This disastrous, bend-over bipartisanship is a hard habit to break. In 2008, Arizona Sen. John McCain rode the "Barack Obama is a nice guy, but vote for me" wave to crashing defeat. In 2012, McCain's endorsee, Mitt Romney, has made "Barack Obama is a nice guy but in over his head" a standard stump-speech talking point.

Conservatives of good will who've watched President Obama brutalize his enemies have one question for the nice-guy niceties: Why, GOP, why?

Why Democrats won't vote on a budget - Washington Examiner editorial

There was also a time when Congress made them, but those days are long gone -- 1,085 days gone, to be precise. That's the last time Democrats, who have controlled one or both houses of Congress this whole time, passed a budget resolution through either the House or the Senate.

On April 15, 2010, both houses failed to meet the statutory deadline for passing a budget for the first time ever. Although the Senate Budget Committee would later pass a plan out of committee, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., blocked it from the floor, going so far as to prevent even a debate about the budget....

It is no coincidence that the Democrats' failure to pass a budget began immediately after Obamacare became law. In order to hide its $1.7 trillion price tag and $500 billion in tax increases through 2022, Democrats had already exhausted every last budgeting gimmick. As a result, they had no further tricks up their sleeve to pay for the rest of their spending priorities without voting on the massive tax increases that Conrad's new budget contained -- $2.6 trillion, and not just on the rich.

Put yourself in the shoes of the half-dozen vulnerable Democratic senators who are up for re-election this year. Would you want to vote for that?

Photo: Senate Democrats Not Even Showing Up for Budget Meetings At This Point - Townhall

What you're looking at is a view of today's Senate Budget Committee meeting, at which Chairman Kent Conrad conducted a faux "markup" of his party's FY 2013 budget resolution. The near side of the table is where Democrats were supposed to sit. Granted, this entire exercise was somewhat academic because its resulting product would receive neither a vote in this committee, nor in the Senate at large. Details! Throughout much of the session, all 11 Republican members were present to, you know, do their jobs. Of the 12 committee Democrats, no more than 3 or 4 were in attendance at any given time, according to sources inside the meeting.

Today is day 1,085 without a Senate budget

WISCONSIN GOVERNOR GREETED AS REPUBLICAN ROCK STAR

It was just another day on the road for Scott Walker. - Scott Bauer and Sean Murphy/BIG Government

A year after his showdown with labor protesters, the Wisconsin governor has become one of the most sought-after figures in the Republican Party, keeping a jet-setting travel schedule more akin to a presidential candidate than a governor trying to survive a recall challenge.

"He's exactly what this country needs in terms of leadership," said banker Bob Emery of Enid, Okla., who was seated at a nearby table, clearly in awe. "The courage he has had ... is what wells up in me. The man is absolutely doing what he believes in."

“We’ve learned who Barack Obama is and what he’s capable of doing,” he said. “He’s over his head, and he’s swimming in the wrong direction.”

Romney: No Greek Columns for Obama This Time Around - Sarah Huisenga/National Journal

Though the Democratic National Convention is more than four months away, Mitt Romney on Wednesday made a campaign stop directly across the street from the football stadium where President Obama is expected to deliver his acceptance speech for the nomination, and offered a blistering assessment of the president’s first term.

...Romney is scheduled to travel on Thursday to Ohio, where he will offer a rebuttal to remarks made there by the president on Wednesday. His schedule has changed since Rick Santorum dropped out of the race last week, with a renewed focus on the president and battleground states in the general election.

“He seems so old-fashioned when it comes to women…because he doesn’t really see us as equal.” No evidence for this charge was presented, because there is none; in fact, Romney included women at the highest levels of his administration when he was governor of Massachusetts. But that didn’t stop Rosen from staying on message with her associative innuendos aimed at the primary target, which was Mitt rather than Ann.

Branding Mitt Romney - Neoneocon

CNN's Soledad O'Brien got a much-needed education about political ideologies from Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) Thursday.

"I've had to give quite a few people a tutorial about the political spectrum of ideologies, and there's a thin separation. And at the turn of the century here in the United States of America, American Communists renamed themselves Progressives, but the strategy and the tactics and the ideology still remains the same.

"And when you're a member of a caucus that actually wanted to have a Constitutional amendment to redistribute wealth in the United States of America, I don't think that's in keeping with the principles and values of this country."
- Noel Sheppard/Newsbusters

"You can call it whatever you want," answered West. "I'm talking about their beliefs. I'm calling it this: Communist, Progressive, Marxist, Socialist, Statist - which is another term that's been used - I'm looking at the ideologies, I'm looking at the things that they believe in, and if you don't think that we have to stand upon truth and be able to identify and clearly contrast the different principles and values and ideologies and principles of governance here in this country, then we're never going to get to the fact of accepting the true debate that's happening in America."

"We don't need a bureaucratic nanny state. We need to stay a Constitutional Republic. I think a lot of people need to study that and understand what it is."

Can anybody argue with that?

“The president likes to attack fellow Americans."

After President Obama took a not-so-subtle jab at his Republican opponent Mitt Romney by saying, “unlike some people, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth,” Romney on Thursday accused the president of “attacking people” when he should be “attacking problems.” - Philip Rucker/Washington Post

“The president likes to attack fellow Americans. He’s always looking for a scapegoat, particularly those [who] have been successful like my dad, and I’m not going to rise to that,” Romney said. “This is a time to solve problems. This is not a time for us to be attacking people. We should be attacking problems.”

Krauthammer: Democratic attacks on Romney are ‘a sign of scurrilousness and hypocrisy’

It’s only April, but President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign has been on the attack against the likely GOP nominee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — with the attacks coming on gender, race and class fronts. - Jeff Poor/The Daily Caller

On Fox News Channel’s “The O’Reilly Factor” Tuesday night, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer warned this is a sign of things to come despite the Democrats’ individual issue campaigns being based on “concocted” ideas.

“Negative campaigns can work. And we’re getting a taste of it right now,” Krauthammer said. ”I think Romney’s strategy should be to embrace that negativity. Just go for it and point out — go back to it and point out how it’s a sign of scurrilousness and hypocrisy.”

Town Hall: Obama Administration on the Verge of a Presidential Meltdown

When Administrations Implode - Victor Davis Hanson, Townhall.com

...So why is the president rashly picking these stupid fights?

Apparently his team wishes to divert attention from generally bleak economic news. The economy still suffers from a dramatic spike in gas prices, chronically high 8 percent plus unemployment, sluggish growth, and serial $1 trillion annual deficits that have sent the debt soaring to $16 trillion.

These perfect storms often either destroy presidents or turn them into unpopular lame ducks. Obama should learn from the fates of his predecessors: There are enough forces in the world to destroy a presidency without needlessly creating more on his own.

Romney is going to have to go on offense and cannot continue to play on Obama's turf.

Over at Slate, Dave Weigel writes about the Romney campaign's nimble rapid response operation in what's effectively been the early days of the general election. - Philip Klein/Washington Examiner

Last week, Romney's team seized on negative comments by Democratic lobbyist Hilary Rosen about Ann Romney being a stay at home mom to push back on the charge that Romney was part of a Republican "war on women." Yesterday, it poked fun at President Obama for having eaten dog meat as a child in Indonesia to respond to the story about Romney having put their dog Seamus on the roof for a family road trip. Though this has been successful at pushing back against some of the manufactured attacks coming from Obama, it's still a case of Romney playing defense.

...The truth is that the "war on women" controversy is an attempt to distract attention from his dismal record as president and the Medicare rhetoric is meant to distract from the reality that Obama has not presented a plan to put the nation on a sustainable fiscal course. Romney needs to remind voters of this and sell voters on a positive agenda of his own.

Obama tries to claim credit for Ohio's economic resurgence, which was orchestrated by... GOP Gov. John Kasich

President Obama was visiting Ohio today and tried to take credit for the Buckeye state's economic resurgence. - Doug Ross
Obama, speaking Wednesday at Lorain County Community College in the Cleveland-area town of Elyria, touted his support for investment in job training programs that connect community colleges with unemployed workers, programs he warned the Republicans would "gut" under their budget blueprint...

...Obama's trip to Ohio -- the 20th of his presidency, according to CBS News -- was ostensibly official, and not a campaign event. But he again used the congressional Republicans as a proxy to frame the general election case against Romney. [Ed.: and again stuck taxpayers with the bill for his campaign expenses.]

..."What's the better way to make our economy stronger? Give more tax breaks to every millionaire and billionaire in the country, or make investments in education and research and healthcare and job training?" he asked.
In celebrating Ohio's comeback, Obama is unintentionally repudiating his own policies.
It turns out that, in spite of Obama, Ohio is 4th in the nation in job creation and tops in the Midwest. In the previous four years before Republican Gov. Kasich came into office, Ohio was 48th.

"Dreams from My Schnauzer"

You guys, last night I had the most wonderful dream. In the dream, President Barack Obama bragged about eating dogs — In his own book! On the audiobook! — and his enablers couldn’t ignore it, and their “Romney is cruel to animals” narrative was totally ruined with the sweep of a paw. It was unbelievably awesome.

The dream is real. Jim Treacher/The Daily Caller

Mitt Romney will never live down the story of how he transported his family dog atop the car during a road trip. It’s been used against him by everyone from animal-rights groups to President Obama’s reelection campaign. - Daily Beast

Now... Now the Daily Caller is here to remind the public that the president didn’t always treat dogs as nicely as he does his pet Bo. A passage from Obama’s book Dreams From My Father, reveals that as a child growing up in Indonesia, young Barack Obama ate dog meat. “Say what you want about Romney, but at least he only put a dog on the roof of his car, not the roof of his mouth,” writes the DC.

◼ Follow-up: Why the ‘Obama eats dogs’ meme has (four) legs - Daily Caller (4/24)

So, when the notion that the president eats dog meat goes viral shortly after he legalizes the slaughter and consumption of horses, everyone’s chomping at the bit to fill the comedy void. In a very real sense, the liberal humor machine gave the “dog meat” meme its power by refusing to produce the kind of commentary that it’s made about every single previous president.

As a joke, the meme strikes at the heart of the uneasiness Americans have about their largely un-vetted president....

Obama's Problem? His Record

"The choice in this election is between an economy that produces a growing middle class and that gives people a chance to get ahead and their kids a chance to get ahead, and an economy that continues down the road we are on, where a fewer and fewer number of people do very well and everybody else is running faster and faster just to keep pace." - Jonah Goldberg/Townhall

That's Obama advisor David Axelrod on "Fox News Sunday," explaining why people should vote for ... Barack Obama.

...what's undoubtedly true is that results matter far more than words. And despite Axelrod's assertions, the fact is that Obama has been leading us down the road we are on for more than three years, and that's what voters will have in mind come Election Day.

The $5 Trillion Debt Man

The $5 Trillion Man: Debt Has Increased Under Obama by $5,027,761,476,484.56 - CNS

In the 39 months since Barack Obama took the oath of office as president of the United States, the federal government’s debt has increased by $5,027,761,476,484.56.... Although he has served less than a term, Obama is now the first American president to see the federal government's debt increase by more than $5 trillion during his time in office.

'Taxmaggedon:' Average Family Will Pay $4K (Four Thousand Dollars) More

Brace yourself. In a mere 271 days, you and your fellow Americans will be hit with a tax hike the likes of which this country has never seen. - AskHeritage
The Washington Post aptly called the unprecedented $494 billion tax hike “Taxmageddon,” and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke described it as a “massive fiscal cliff.” Whatever your preferred imagery, it’s a really big deal.

Despite all the warnings, President Barack Obama has kept his silence while Congress has made no apparent effort to prevent this impending calamity to families and the economy. The prevailing wisdom is that “something will get done” in a lame duck session of Congress after the election. But why wait? And why after the election?

Time is running out on American interest in Canada’s oil-sands product. The media in the US didn’t cover the so-called “Three Amigos” summit, but Investors Business Daily kept up with the Canadian papers, which did cover Stephen Harper’s warnings to Obama on obstructionism over Keystone:
Obama Alienates Canada And Mexico At Three Amigos
Diplomacy: Most summits are mush-mouthed affairs full of pleasantries. Tuesday's "Three Amigos" summit was different: a litany of how President Obama has alienated our neighbors.

You wouldn't know this from reading the mainstream media, which reported the disastrous summit with anodyne headlines like: "Obama talks trade, energy with Canada, Mexico leaders at Summit" (Associated Press) and "Obama, Mexico's Calderon vow more drug crime cooperation" (Reuters).

Obama's neglect of our nearest neighbors and biggest trade partners has created deteriorating relations, a sign of a president who's out of touch with reality. Problems are emerging that aren't being reported....

Energy has become a searing rift between the U.S. and Canada and threatens to leave the U.S. without its top energy supplier.

White House denies ‘deal’ on Panetta’s commute - Susan Crabtree/The Washington Times
Contradicting an account by a Pentagon official, the White House is denying that President Obama struck a “deal” with Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta to allow him to commute home to California most weekends on a military aircraft at a cost of $32,000 per round-trip flight and a total of $860,000 as of early April....

Amid outcry over wasteful spending at a General Services Administration conference that cost top officials their jobs, Mr. Panetta earlier this month admitted to paying just $17,000 for his share of the cost of the 27 round trips, approximately $630 per visit.

Buzzfeed also attacks Romney's Mormon faith, so it's a nice, sweet two-fer for Their Precious One.

The Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin expresses exactly what Ben Smith and company are up to better than I could: ◼ Is it open season on Mormonism?
The Obama team won’t touch this stuff with 10-foot poll. And so long as they have press people who will carry the message (and retweet and link) questioning Romney’s views on race and gender because he is a Mormon, it doesn’t have to.

Taliban talks terrify Afghan women

A real war on women is brewing in Afghanistan. - Ashish Kumar Sen/The Washington Times

Women there are worried that the freedoms they have won since U.S. forces toppled the brutal Taliban regime 10 years ago will be squandered if the Islamic hard-liners return to power through a U.S.-led peace process.

“Dark days are in Afghanistan’s future,” said Manizha Naderi, who heads the civil rights group Women for Afghan Women.

U.S. and Afghan officials and the Taliban have been engaged for several months in an effort to initiate peace talks that could lead to the militants playing a role in government.

“If there are negotiations with the Taliban, women’s rights will be the first to go, and women will be forced to stay at home all over again,” Ms. Naderi said in a phone interview from Kabul.

Americans Making Over $50,000 a Year Paid 93.3 Percent of All Taxes in 2010

In contrast, Americans making less than $50,000 had an effective tax rate of 3.5 percent and their total share of the tax burden was just 6.7 percent. - CNS News

Americans making more than $250,000 had an effective tax rate of 23.4 percent and their total share of the tax burden was 45.7 percent.

Out of the 143 million tax returns that were filed with the IRS in 2010, 58 million – or 41 percent – of those filers were non-payers.

In other words, only 85 million actually paid taxes.

But Tax Foundation data also shows that people who didn’t pay any income tax received $105 billion in refundable tax credits from the IRS.

Since the 2001 toppling of the Taliban, which banned education for women and girls, females have returned to schools, especially in Kabul.

"We are 100 percent sure that the water they drunk inside their classes was poisoned. This is either the work of those who are against girls' education or irresponsible armed individuals," said Jan Mohammad Nabizada, a spokesman for education department in northern Takhar province.

The Democrats' Biggest Lie

There are white lies. There are ordinary lies. There are big lies. And then there are lies that are so huge that it is difficult for a rational person to believe that such a lie has been attempted. - Larrey Anderson/American Thinker

The left's talking points about the GOP, contraception, and women in America in the year 2012 are based on the biggest[i] lie of our century: the GOP is attempting to ban contraception in America.

This lie cannot stand examination. The left lies about Social Security reform, unemployment numbers, the state of the economy, global warming, etc. The list is long. The script is methodical and boring. The politicians who deliver the lines of that script are boorish. But the assertion that the GOP is attempting to deny women contraception at the state level is so absurd and so heinous that the Party must not be silent. It must not sit quietly or offer up tepid rebuttals. The GOP must respond loudly and rationally. It must do so now.

...On the issue of state control of contraception, women have nothing to fear. It has long been unconstitutional for any state to prohibit access to contraceptive methods, techniques, or devices when used by adults.

Here is why. In the early 1960s, a married Connecticut couple went to their local Planned Parenthood office and asked for advice about abortion. They received a prescription for contraceptives. At that time, Connecticut had a state law that prohibited the use of contraceptives. In 1965 the Supreme Court, in Griswold v. Connecticut, 381 U.S. 479, held the Connecticut law unconstitutional [iii].

No state can prohibit the sale of contraceptives. This should be the end of the argument; everything written either asserting or implying that the GOP can or will ban contraceptives is a lie. For once, just once, the GOP should stand up and, with every resource available to the Party, expose this propaganda and the politicians pitching it for what it is...a lie coming from liars.

“Democratic-leaning” Super-PAC Run by Media Matters David Brock Attacks Romney

The laughable Obama effort to call for “transparency” from Mitt Romney is now being aided by a far-left PAC... - Jammie Wearing Fool

...American Bridge 21st Century was started by former journalist and liberal activist David Brock, who staffed the super PAC with former Hill staffers and employees of his nonprofit, Media Matters for America.

And hey, what about that transparency?

The group has not reported making any independent expenditures to the Federal Election Commission, but the group has published a number of anti-Romney videos on its website.

...Gee, I wonder who could be funding this outfit? And why isn’t the link to Media Matters mentioned?

(Via OpenSecrets) Here’s who’s paying for this shadowy group. You’ll notice the unions are the biggest donor. Curiously, there’s an oil company president who gave $150,000. Who knew Media Matters was in bed with Big Oil?

By the way, they’ve already blown through $4.5 million.

Maybe this explains the dishonest reporting.

Much of the organization’s most effective work goes on behind the scenes, as it quietly feeds material to reporters all over the country.

Most of what they do seems to be hush-hush.

Obama goes negative to side step his sorry record

Washington Examiner Editorial

"[I]f you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare the voters. If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from." That is what Barack Obama said when he accepted his party's presidential nomination in 2008. Four years later, it reads like a prophetic description of his re-election campaign....

o it's no surprise Obama has launched a scorched earth campaign to scare voters away from presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney. So far, this assault has been based around three themes....

These are all examples of "recycling stale scare tactics" in the absence of "any fresh ideas."

If Romney is going to win in November, he cannot fall into Obama's trap. When he argues that Obama is the one who is bad for women, or that Obama slashed Medicare benefits in his health care law, Romney is fighting on Obama's turf. Instead, at every opportunity, Romney should remind Americans that Obama's entire campaign is one endless attempt to distract voters from his disastrous record and lack of a real plan to address the nation's most pressing problems.

David Axelrod makes the case for Mitt Romney - HotAir

A great rapid response effort by the Mitt Romney team on this one … In an interview on Fox News Sunday this morning, David Axelrod said the 2012 election will come down to a choice: Do Americans want “an economy that produces a growing middle class and gives people a chance to get ahead and their kids a chance to get ahead?” Or do they want to continue down “the road we’re on”?

The Romney camp quickly clipped the interview and uploaded the relevant soundbite as a YouTube video — then tweeted it out.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul wrote quickly, “@davidaxelrod’s right: choice IS btwn growing economy vs continuing down down [sic] road we’re on...”

92 Year-Old Researcher Develops Kits for Identifying Antibiotic Resistant Infections

A 92-year-old scientist from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has invented a kit that enables the immediate detection of drug-resistant bacteria, one of the major concerns of organizations like the World Health Organization.
Real time alerts for doctors - The kits are modular, disposable arrays of spots impregnated with several types of antibiotics. The exact combination can be easily varied according to need. Unprocessed samples of any specimen to be tested are placed directly on the array spots, which are then covered by a lid containing a dark indicator dye. If the sample contains bacteria that can destroy the antibiotic impregnated in a particular spot, the dark indicator dye facing that spot becomes lighter, exposing the antibiotic resistance within minutes.

The kits will thus alert doctors to the presence of a bacterial infection, warn which antibiotics will be futile and inform which, if any, still constitute a treatment option.

The New York Times runs an exposé of sorts on the Obama White House and its empty promises of changing “business as usual” in Washington DC that is remarkable in a number of respects.

As Daniel Halper of The Weekly Standard writes, though, the most remarkable might be the remarkable honesty of former Rep. Former Dem. Congressman Kennedy Alleges 'Quid Pro Quo' for Access to White House - Daniel Halper/The Weekly Standard

...One can argue that this isn’t all that much different than other Republican and Democratic administrations. The article recalls the infamous Lincoln Bedroom “rentals” of the Clinton administration, for instance. However, Clinton didn’t run for the office by demonizing lobbyists and wealthy donors and insisting that he would provide a New Purity to the Beltway, either. In 2008, that was almost the entire message from Obama, who had no executive, military, or foreign-relations experience before running for the one position that requires expertise in all three areas.

I’m not certain that the Obama White House has been any less transparent about influence peddling, but it has certainly not been more transparent. All we got was an inexperienced executive and a boatload of sanctimony and hypocrisy.

He (Barack Obama) was in Florida this week screaming and yelling about rich people. He went after the Supreme Court. We’ve got to stop this…

Former GE CEO Jack Welch Blasts Obama’s Leadership: He’s got an enemies list that would make Richard Nixon proud. - Bruno J. Navarro/Wall St Journal

President Obama’s “divide-and-conquer” approach isn’t what great leaders do, Jack Welch said Thursday.

The renowned former General Electric CEO chided the president for blaming others for economic woes.

“It was the insurance executives in health care. It was the bankers in the collapse. It was the oil companies as oil prices go up. It was Congress if things didn’t go the way he wanted. And recently it’s been the Supreme Court,” he said.

“He’s got an enemies list that would make Richard Nixon proud.”

“Surely his supporters must think this particular tactic is effective, but there can be no denying that the country is more polarized than when Obama took office,” Welch wrote, making a case for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Rick Santelli Nails It Again.

The Buffett rule itself may die, but the name will live on as a metaphor for pointless public policy....

Rick Santelli - Taxing the Rich will not Offset the Deficit - Hillbuzz

Obama's Buffett Rule campaign hits dead end - Byron York/Washington Examiner
At times it seems President Obama believes the Buffett Rule -- his proposal that Americans making more than $1 million a year pay at least 30 percent in federal income taxes -- is the only solution needed to solve the nation's staggering fiscal crisis. But with a Senate vote coming Monday in which the measure faces united Republican opposition -- plus no future in the House -- this week is likely to mark the end of the Buffett Rule as a major part of the Obama agenda. That's not just because of the political opposition; just as important, the Buffett Rule is running into a dead end because a significant part of the political class in Washington has finally admitted the idea is little more than a gimmick that would do nothing to fix the country's problems.

Of course, conservatives and Republicans have thought that all along. But in recent days, the trouble for Obama has been far broader, as commentators and politicians -- faced with nonpartisan estimates that enacting the Buffett Rule would raise about $4.7 billion in revenue per year, less than a drop in the bucket of a $1 trillion-plus annual deficit -- admitted that there's just not much there....

By the end of the week, the Buffett Rule initiative had been overtaken by the flap over Hilary Rosen and her remarks about Ann Romney. But even without the new distraction, the Buffett Rule was in serious trouble. It wasn't going to pass Congress, no matter what happens in the Senate, but by a combination of the president overplaying his hand and the Washington commentariat gradually discovering the essential emptiness of the Buffett idea, what once seemed like a winner for the Obama campaign became an idea that few were taking seriously any more.
Obama Releases Taxes, Does Not Qualify for Buffett Rule - National Journal
President Obama’s Secretary Paid Higher Tax Rate Than He Did - ABC
President Obama has been making a big political push for the “Buffett Rule,” which would require millionaires to pay a minimum of 30% of their income in taxes. To illustrate the point, the president has pointed out that billionaire investor Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than does his secretary.
President Obama’s secretary, Anita Decker Breckenridge, makes $95,000 a year. White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage tells ABC News that Breckenridge “pays a slightly higher rate this year on her substantially lower income, which is exactly why we need to reform our tax code and ask the wealthiest to pay their fair share. ”
The Buffett Tax Loss - Wall St. Journal
It turns out this Obama proposal will cost federal revenue.

...The case for the Buffett tax keeps eroding. When President Obama announced the idea, he said it would help "stabilize our debt and deficits over the next decade." Then came the inconvenient revelation that the new 30% millionaire's tax would raise only $46.7 billion over 10 years, and would leave about 99.5% of the deficit intact in 2013. It was a far cry from "stabilizing the debt."

Now we learn that the Buffett tax the Senate is expected to vote on early next week will make the deficit worse. That's because both Mr. Obama and Senate Democrats have made it clear that their new "fairness" tax is to offset the revenue loss from another provision related to the Alternative Minimum Tax.
