Election 2016: Meet the GOP's outsider candidates



Mainstream media already have a few favorites among the Republican Party's rapidly growing list of long-shot 2016 presidential candidates.

With the recent entries of Carly Fiorina, Ben Carson, and Mike Huckabee into the race, the Republicans now have multiple declared candidates who score single-digit percentages in RealClearPolitics' average of polls. Other one-digit players expected to enter the race include New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Sen. Rick Santorum, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Sen. Lindsey Graham, and others.

But being an unlikely 2016 choice doesn't necessarily mean the press won't be interested in your campaign. A few unlikely GOP hopefuls boast of an impressive amount of media attention.

“About a third of the little girls are raped in the process of getting here. It's a humanitarian problem, but it's apart from immigration reform. This is a specific problem created by an impression that if you get to America, you can stay. We have got to turn that impression around, send these children back to their homeland and tell countries in question if you don't keep them and take care of them, we're going to cut all aid off,” Graham said.

Texas Governor and potential presidential aspirant Rick Perry (R) has said “thanks, but no thanks” to an offer to meet President Obama when he arrives at the Austin airport on Wednesday.
It is common practice for a state’s governor to meet the U.S. president at the airport, as a welcoming gesture. But Perry said in a letter to the White House that a brief greeting on the tarmac wasn’t going to be good enough, according to a report by the Austin American-Statesman.
I appreciate the offer to greet you at Austin-Bergstrom Airport, but a quick handshake on the tarmac will not allow for a thoughtful discussion regarding the humanitarian and national security crises enveloping the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas.

I would instead offer to meet with you at any time during your visit to Texas for a substantive meeting to discuss this critical issue. With the appropriate notice, I am willing to change my schedule to facilitate this request.
Obama has taken heat for his planned trip to Texas, during which he has fundraisers planned, but no scheduled visits to the border, according to Politico. The White House has downplayed the criticism, saying that the President is not concerned with the “optics” of the visit.

Arizona Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio criticized lawmakers who claimed the immigration bill provided sufficient border security.
“[Undocumented immigrants] are very, very innovative. You’ll never secure the border,” Arpaio said on Fox News on Monday. “To say you’re not going to enforce the illegal immigration laws in the interior and blame it on the border, that’s just a copout.”

Yesterday’s filibuster by Sen. Rand Paul was all about a fairly simple question for the president: Is it constitutional to order a drone strike on an American citizen who is not an imminent threat on American soil without due process?

There was no response from the White House where a Nobel Peace Prize adorns a West Wing wall.
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham — being a courtly southern gentlemen who doesn’t believe in troubling the man who just bought him dinner — found Paul’s entire premise outlandish:
“This idea that we’re going to use a drone to attack an American citizen in a cafe in America is ridiculous.”
Well, in that case it should be an easy question to answer, shouldn’t it?

"There couldn't have been a starker contrast between the new leadership of Rand Paul, Mike Lee and Ted Cruz and the old guard of McCain and Graham," noted one GOP aide.

McCain defended his criticisms of Paul, telling The Washington Examiner that the Kentucky lawmaker's opposition to drones would limit the president's power to stop terrorists.

"I think the whole argument, if we went that way, would threaten our national security," McCain said.

But Paul told The Examiner that McCain is wrong and that the public backs his efforts to curb government overreach, a central Tea Party tenet.

"He's dismissive of something that involves the discussion of whether the Fifth Amendment applies to American citizens," Paul said. "And I consider that to be a very important issue."
