Election 2016: Meet the GOP's outsider candidates



Mainstream media already have a few favorites among the Republican Party's rapidly growing list of long-shot 2016 presidential candidates.

With the recent entries of Carly Fiorina, Ben Carson, and Mike Huckabee into the race, the Republicans now have multiple declared candidates who score single-digit percentages in RealClearPolitics' average of polls. Other one-digit players expected to enter the race include New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Sen. Rick Santorum, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Sen. Lindsey Graham, and others.

But being an unlikely 2016 choice doesn't necessarily mean the press won't be interested in your campaign. A few unlikely GOP hopefuls boast of an impressive amount of media attention.

Santorum Cancels Monday Events

Santorum and his wife, Karen, will be spending the day at the hospital with their daughter, Bella. He did not have public events planned, but all internal “campaign activities,” the source says, from phone calls to fundraising, will be put on hold. Bella was hospitalized on Friday.

EXHAUSTED: Rick Takes 4-Day Break from Campaign...

The conversation focused on the struggling candidacy of former House speaker Newt Gingrich and whether a final push could be made to unite conservatives and stop the likely nomination of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. The idea of Santorum leaving the race was not raised.
“It was a discussion of how to win, not a discussion of anything other than that,” said Gary Bauer, a prominent social conservative leader who was at the meeting.

Despite this optimism, there are signs that the wear and tear of the campaign trail and the daunting odds against his winning the nomination are weighing on Santorum.

“He is exhausted,” said one influential Republican who has talked to Santorum in recent days. “He is very, very worried about losing Pennsylvania. He is trying to find a way to throw a very long pass that could change the game.”

According to the WSJ, Romney’s also beating Santorum 51/38 among voters who decided in just the last few days. A quote to ponder from a Wisconsin voter while we wait for more: “I very much hope that he gets the nomination and we get this thing settled soon. These guys are kind of tearing each other apart in the process. I think it’s a circular firing squad at this point.”

I get that politics isn’t supposed to be fair, but it would be classier if Rick Santorum laid off on the highly-charged negative TV ads since it’s absolutely clear to everyone on the planet, except him and maybe his wife that he is not going to be the nominee and that he should help, rather than hurt, the very hard work that Mitt and Ann Romney have ahead of them as they face the monster Obama machine.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters in Maryland shows Romney with 45% support to Santorum’s 28%. Twelve percent (12%) favor former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, while Texas Congressman Ron Paul earns seven percent (7%) of the vote. Two percent (2%) like another candidate in the race, and six percent (6%) are undecided.

California Republicans get behind Mitt Romney

Republican voters in California have swung behind Mitt Romney, with the national presidential front-runner crushing his rivals by double digits and substantially expanding his support in the state, a new poll has found.

Romney won 42% of registered Republican voters, with his closest rival, Rick Santorum, trailing by 19 points, according to the USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul were a distant third and fourth.

Romney's support has risen by 15 points since a November USC/Times poll, when Herman Cain was his closest competitor. (The former businessman has since dropped out.)

Yet there remains a palpable lack of enthusiasm for the Republican field. Half of GOP voters said they wished other candidates were running for president.

Only 3 out of 10 voters surveyed wanted to see the race come to a quick end, while the rest wanted to see their candidate of choice soldier on to secure the nomination, even if it means that the primary contest will continue on for months.

Rick Santorum cruised to victory in the Louisiana Republican presidential primary on Saturday but still trails Mitt Romney by a wide margin in the national delegate count for the party nomination.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, was projected to finish second. Former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich was third, but immediately rejected suggestions he should drop out. Texas congressman Ron Paul ran fourth.

Santorum had strong support in all income groups except for the very wealthy, and solid backing from conservative and religious voters in the Deep South state.

DELEGATE CHAOS AT MISSOURI CAUCUS...

Republican officials at the St. Charles Caucuses today abruptly shut down the caucus meeting and threatened to jail the attendees if they did not immediately leave the building. The attendees at the Francis Howell North High School in St. Peters, Missouri booed and started to chant, “Stay! Stay! Stay!”

Bob McCarty, who was there, called it a St. Patrick’s Day Massacre. At least one person was arrested....

Mitt Romney and his advisers pride themselves on vigorously pursuing every delegate in every corner of the country in their quest to secure the Republican presidential nomination.

That was not the case here at the Railyard Steakhouse, where Republicans convened their Chariton County caucus on Thursday evening. They voted to pledge their full share of delegates to Rick Santorum — without a word of objection from the Romney campaign.

The Republicans here were simply following the results of the February primary, which Mr. Santorum won by 30 percentage points. The Romney campaign argued that the contest was meaningless because no delegates were at stake.

Yet Mr. Santorum’s victory has had a lingering effect. This became clear here in Brunswick, a small town about two hours east of Kansas City, which offered a peek into the process that will unfold across Missouri on Saturday when Republicans convene caucuses to begin the arduous process of selecting delegates in the presidential campaign.

A quirk of election law makes Missouri the only state this year to essentially allow voters to take two attempts at choosing their favorite candidate. The first came during a primary in February, which was dismissed as a beauty contest, but one that gave Mr. Santorum a boost of momentum. The second comes on Saturday. (today)

Mitt Romney wins Wyoming caucus
