Far-left activists behind recent anti-conservative riots in Berkeley tried to “brainwash” and “indoctrinate” students into supporting left-wing social justice causes, Berkeley Unified School District argued in court filings reviewed by local news organization Berkeleyside.

By Any Means Necessary (BAMN), a far-left activist group with deep ties to pro-pedophilia advocates, places a priority on youth involvement in its protests, according to the group’s stated principles.

Middle school teacher Yvette Felarca, a prominent BAMN organizer, repeatedly abused her position as an educator to push left-wing activist causes, the school district claimed....

...Because it is not conservatives who coerced today's young people or made them afraid of ideas that challenge them. Conservatives did not shame people into silence, or send thugs out on college campuses to beat down those who wanted to speak.

The left did all that.

It's there in front of you, the thuggish mobs of the left killing free speech at American universities. The thugs call themselves antifas, for anti-fascists.

They beat people up and break things and set fires and intimidate. These are not anti-fascists. These are fascists. This is what fascists do.

Some wear masks to cover their faces, or hide bike locks in scarves and swing them at the heads of any who disagree. They're all about intimidation. And intimidation on a national scale, so angry and violent, is a fascist thing of the left....

American universities were once thought to be the last great refuge of ideas, where ideas could flourish and be challenged and debated. But today, the university is the place where liberty and ideas go to die.

The American university is where intellectuals with dissenting views are silenced -- even physically assaulted -- by mobs. And administrators sit by and watch, afraid to anger those mobs....

What has been the general liberal response to Americans who insist on speaking after being threatened?

Annoyance. The response sounds like this: Hush. Go away. Come back later when it's quiet. Why cause trouble? Shhh.

Right-wing provocateur Ann Coulter has been silenced at Berkeley, where the free speech movement was born. And other intellectuals, including Charles Murray and Heather Mac Donald, have been silenced at other colleges, attacked by mobs.

If the left agrees with your views, you may speak. If the left doesn't agree, they will shut you down. This is America now....

Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes Says Democrats Were Bigger First Amendment Threat Than Trump



..."The threat to the First Amendment came from the Democratic side," Bewkes said during a conversation with Business Insider CEO Henry Blodget at a conference in New York in a session that was webcast.

Bewkes made the comment after Blodget noted that Trump had criticized CNN for allegedly unfair coverage, and even threatened some sort of regulation in retaliation against CNN, owned by Time Warner.

"I don't think that's a serious thing," Bewkes told Blodget at the Ignition: Future of Digital conference. "If anybody is going to change the First Amendment — remember, the Democratic party had a campaign plank to change the First Amendment, and they were doing it in the guise of campaign finance reform."

The CEO, continuing his theme, even acknowledged that the news media does, indeed, lean left, as conservatives have long complained.

"That was worrying me more, because the press tends to miss that because they tend to lean that way, and therefore they were supporting what they were viewing, I think overly charitably, as something in cleaning up money in politics when in fact what it would do is restrain multiple voices," Bewkes argued. "So, I thought the threat to the First Amendment came from the Democratic side more. I think there won't be a serious effort on the Republican side."...

The University of California, Irvine has suspended its College Republicans chapter for an entire year after the group hosted controversial conservative pundit Milo Yiannopoulos.



“We wanted his return to be a rally for young Republicans, just before the election, to invigorate and excite young conservatives to vote for the GOP. I told administration this, so it is clear that this suspension that comes during such a critical election year, is a political statement on behalf of UCI,” CR president Ariana Rowlands told Breitbart.

“They did everything they could to stop us from hosting him the first time, and now they want to make sure that we cannot host him again,” she added.

Likewise, CR social chair Carl Olson told Campus Reform that while UCI typically remains neutral on political issues, his group was met with opposition from the moment they mentioned hosting Yiannopoulos.

“Quite frankly, we were met with opposition right from the beginning with hosting Milo, so it does not come as a surprise that the university tried to niggle a loophole to get us pulled, after the fact,” he said. “I think the university wants to save face with progressives, and martyring our club seems like the easiest step for them.”

Twitter Doesn't Have To Live by the First Amendment, But @Nero Shows It Should



Earlier today, Twitter briefly suspended the account of Milo Yiannopoulos. Almost immediately, Twitter erupted in protest, with the hashtag #FreeMilo trending. His account was restored less than an hour later, but no explanation was ever provided.

This isn’t the first time Twitter has been suspected of censorship against conservatives, nor will it be the last. Twitter is far from alone: Facebook has been embroiled in scandal about censorship for weeks, while controversy on Reddit recently erupted in the wake of the Orlando shooting. This raises important questions about the differences between the legality of censorship, and the appropriateness of censorship....

With more than 300 million active users, Twitter’s user base has grown to nearly the same size as the population of the United States. Twitter, by some perspectives, has grown to be its own quasi-state. It is an entity that is used for sharing ideas and news in real time, which users rely on daily. When Twitter censors the views of Yiannopoulos and other individuals without cause or adherence to its rules, it erodes the foundation of, and destroys faith in, the validity of its rules and the content available through its service.

As an American company, Twitter ought to be promoting the same values of expression that America is founded upon, even if it is not required to. Twitter, by its very nature, is an extension of the marketplace of ideas. It should make every effort to promote and encourage it, not tear it down.

(T)he roots of the issue, Politico reports, stem from Presidential Policy Directive 22, an Obama administration decision that apparently gives the Secret Service the task of “access control” to the political conventions. Another report from USA Today indicated that Obama has issued 19 such “policy directives” (PPDs) without disclosing them to the public.



According to a Politico article published last month, journalists wanting to attend the Republican and Democratic political conventions this summer will have to submit to a new credentialing process that includes background checks conducted by the Secret Service.

Ironically, the roots of the issue, Politico reports, stem from Presidential Policy Directive 22, an Obama administration decision that apparently gives the Secret Service the task of “access control” to the political conventions. Another report from USA Today indicated that Obama has issued 19 such “policy directives” (PPDs) without disclosing them to the public.

The USA Today article quotes a political scientist and former advisor to Congress as stating PPDs “have the same legal force as an executive order, forming a body of largely secret law.” Nevertheless, executive orders must be published in the Federal Register. “PPDs are not," the advisor said. "It is a kind of secret law. People have to obey it. But it's a directive that can allocate money, direct people or take a course of action."

The media, needless to say, are incensed. A piece in the Daily Beast – using a metaphor that we consider especially amusing – characterizes the Washington press establishment as “up in arms.” That article even suggests that the Secret Service, having been “tarnished” by “aggressive investigative reporting,” may abuse its newly-conferred authority to settle the score.

Journalists cited by the Beast fault the “inscrutable security screening process for which there are no plainly established criteria, and from which there is no appeal,” as well as the idea that government is now exercising discretion over “who can and can’t be a journalist.”

“I don’t think the First Amendment allows that,” one journalist huffs. Concerns have also been raised that arrests arising from what the journalists claim is prior First Amendment activity might be enough to exclude them. Some are even floating the idea of “boycotting” the vetting process for credentials en masse.

Now that big media is feeling the indignity and insecurity of submitting their rights to the whims of an opaque and seemingly arbitrary bureaucratic screening process, we can only say, “Welcome to the club ... It serves you right.”
