As the night turned to morning, looters approached the market, and police reportedly were ordered to “stand down” and allowed looters to take over the liquor store, St. Louis County Police told Fox 2 in St. Louis. Looters set fire to a Domino’s Pizza, hit the liquor store, and broke through a beauty store. Much of the looting took place after 1 a.m. on Saturday morning, and storeowners told CNN they were frustrated that police did not intervene.

On Saturday afternoon, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon (D) declared a state of the emergency and implemented a curfew after Ferguson residents looted and rioted on Friday evening.
Captain Ron Johnson of the Missouri Highway Patrol said authorities would enforce a curfew from midnight to 5 AM for the safety of the "citizens of Ferguson."

...Nixon said the "ill will of the few" cannot "undermine the good will of the many people" and endanger Ferguson residents and businesses. He criticized the looters for drowning out the voices of the peaceful demonstrators and said he would "not allow a handful of looters to endanger the rest of this community."

Nixon said that in order get justice, "we must first have and maintain peace."

"This is a test. The eyes of the world are watching. This is a test of whether a community, this community, any community, can break the cycle of fear, distrust, and violence and replace them with peace, strength, and ultimately justice," Nixon said at a contentious press conference that was interrupted on multiple instances by Ferguson residents who were shouting questions and complaints. "It will not happen in one night."

In a shocking revelation today, it was revealed that the Department of Justice had the videotape footage of Michael Brown robbing a liquor store in Ferguson, but actually told the police department NOT to release it to the public.

The original video poster appears sympathetic to the narrative that Mike Brown was shot unarmed with his hands in the air. But he unknowingly picks up conversation between a man who saw the altercation and another neighbor....

Why armored vehicles in a Midwestern inner suburb?

Federal grants drive police militarization. In 2012, as I was able to establish in moments through an online search, St. Louis County (of which Ferguson is a part) got a Bearcat armored vehicle and other goodies this way. The practice can serve to dispose of military surplus (though I’m told the Bearcat is not military surplus, but typically purchased new) and it sometimes wins the gratitude of local governments, even if they are too strapped for cash to afford more ordinary civic supplies (and even if they are soon destined to be surprised by the high cost of maintaining gear intended for armed combat).

Among right-of-center elected officials, several have spoken out:

“Reporters should never be detained — a free press is too important — simply for doing their jobs,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) wrote on his Facebook on Thursday. “Civil liberties must be protected, but violence is not the answer.”

Together, we should all mourn the loss of life in Ferguson, Missouri and work to keep our communities safe and free. Police officers risk their lives every day to keep us safe, and any time a young man loses his life in a confrontation with law enforcement, it is tragic.
The famously libertarian congressman Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) expressed great dismay over the situation unfolding in Missouri:

Many were confused by Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-KY) apparent silence on the situation in Ferguson. It turned out that he was penning a definitive article for Time in which he insisted that the police must be demilitarized....

It is shocking to learn today that so many on the left appear utterly unaware of the vigorous debate conservatives have been engaging in over the increasing militarization and heavy-handedness of the police. The conservative columnist S.E. Cupp has compiled a fairly comprehensive list of voices on the right who have sounded the alarm over police forces exceeding their authority.

There is a systemic problem with today’s law enforcement.

Not surprisingly, big government has been at the heart of the problem. Washington has incentivized the militarization of local police precincts by using federal dollars to help municipal governments build what are essentially small armies—where police departments compete to acquire military gear that goes far beyond what most of Americans think of as law enforcement.

This is usually done in the name of fighting the war on drugs or terrorism. The Heritage Foundation’s Evan Bernick wrote in 2013 that, “the Department of Homeland Security has handed out anti-terrorism grants to cities and towns across the country, enabling them to buy armored vehicles, guns, armor, aircraft, and other equipment.”

Bernick continued, “federal agencies of all stripes, as well as local police departments in towns with populations less than 14,000, come equipped with SWAT teams and heavy artillery.”

...The militarization of our law enforcement is due to an unprecedented expansion of government power in this realm. It is one thing for federal officials to work in conjunction with local authorities to reduce or solve crime. It is quite another for them to subsidize it.

Americans must never sacrifice their liberty for an illusive and dangerous, or false, security. This has been a cause I have championed for years, and one that is at a near-crisis point in our country.

Our reactionary leaders: Tied down with petty concerns and paralyzed by real crises

◼ President Obama surprised the nation Thursday afternoon by showing up on his way to the golf course to deliver a statement on the death of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African-American man who was shot to death by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo., and the increasingly volatile protests that the young man's death has inspired. - T. Obama's remarks were preceded by a statement from Gov. Jay Nixon, D-Mo., who also called for calm and restraint after days of passive silence on the issue....

Remember: We are now entering into the second week of a town being torn apart over the shooting death of a reportedly unarmed 18-year-old -- and the president and Missouri’s governor have just now decided to make their presence known.

Yes, there’s always the question, “What would you have them do?” And this is an excellent question. Calmly assessing the situation, weighing the pros and cons of a given crisis before offering comment, is the mark of prudent and wise leadership.

However, in a situation where heavily armed law enforcement officials have been deployed to face off with American citizens, where the people are begging for their elected officials to listen to them, this hands-off approach, this silence from our leaders, is unacceptable. At the very least, they can offer a comment or some sort of effort to help alleviate tensions.

...America deserves better than this. The people of Ferguson deserve better than this. Michael Brown’s family deserves better than this.

Obama calls for calm, then golfs...

President Obama went straight from a press briefing to the putting greens on Thursday. Shortly after making remarks on the situation in northern Iraq and the escalating tensions in Ferguson, Mo., Obama headed to the Vineyard Golf Club, according to a White House press pool report.

"I would contend that discussing police tactics from Martha's Vineyard is not helpful to ultimately calming the situation," director Jim Pasco said in an interview with The Hill.

"I think what he has to do as president and as a constitutional lawyer is remember that there is a process in the United States and the process is being followed, for good or for ill, by the police and by the county and by the city and by the prosecutors’ office," Pasco added.

Pasco harkened back to 2009, when Obama criticized a Massachusetts police officer for arresting Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, when he was attempting to break into his own home. Obama said the officer had “acted stupidly.”

"That is one where the president spoke precipitously without all the facts," Pasco said, adding that the current situation "is a much larger and more tragic incident."

It hasn’t been all bad. Obama got the chance to tout the administration’s success in helping Iraq’s Yazidi religious minority escape from Mount Sinjar, which had been surrounded by fighters from the Islamic State.

And he is managing to squeeze in quite a bit of leisure time. He’s dined out with close friends. He’s hung out on the beach with his family. He’s played three rounds of golf.

On Thursday, he went from the podium where he delivered the statement on Ferguson to the Vineyard Golf Club faster than a ball driven by a 3-wood.

Obama departed the Edgartown School at 1 p.m. Four minutes later, he had arrived at the course.
