What to Watch in Tuesday’s Primaries



Incumbents will be on defense and challengers in key House races will face their first tests in Tuesday’s primaries, as voters in seven states head to the polls.

Five states are holding their regularly scheduled primaries, while Republicans in Mississippi and South Carolina will weigh in on House primary runoffs. Tuesday will also determine whether 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney and former Rep. Michael G. Grimm, a convicted felon, can jump-start their political comebacks....

The President's legal troubles are getting worse....

Earlier this month we talked about a lawsuit filed by Texas Attorney General and Governor-elect Greg Abbott. The suit seeks to stop Obama's amnesty actions before they're implemented. At the time, 17 states had joined the suit, as the Chicago Tribune reported:
A coalition of 17 U.S. states sued the Obama administration on Wednesday saying it acted illegally by issuing an executive order to ease the threat of deportation for millions of immigrants who are in the country without the proper documents.

The case being led by Texas and filed at the Federal Court in the Southern District of Texas said the executive order announced by Obama last month violated constitutional limits on presidential powers. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, a Republican and the Texas governor-elect, said the lawsuit is not asking for monetary damages but is seeking to have the order declared illegal.

Arkansas
Florida
Michigan
North Dakota
Ohio
Oklahoma

Nolen had just been fired when he drove to the front of the business, hit a vehicle and walked inside.

Lewis confirms that Hufford was stabbed several times and that Nolen “severed her head.”

At that point, Lewis claims Nolen met 43-year-old Traci Johnson and began attacking her with the same knife.

Officials say at that point, Mark Vaughan, an Oklahoma County reserve deputy and a former CEO of the business, shot him as he was actively stabbing Johnson. . . .

The FBI is now looking into Nolen’s background after his former co-workers said he tried to convert them to Islam after recently converting himself.

The “federal overreach tainted a Common Core program created with “well-intentioned goals,” Fallin said. “President Obama and Washington bureaucrats have usurped Common Core in an attempt to influence state education standards.”

“We are capable of developing our academic standards that will be better than Common Core,” Fallin said in a prepared statement after signing the bill .

The federal government might threaten to pull education funds because of Fallin’s repeal, as Common Core supporters warned, but the governor and her spokesman, Alex Weintz, stressed that if the state is deprived of any federal monies, it will be only a portion of the total.

The measure had passed overwhelmingly in both chambers of the Legislature –- 78-19 in the House and 31-10 in the Senate, on the last day of the session.

Common Core is on the chopping block. Oklahoma today became the third state to exit the national education standards and reclaim its decision-making authority in education. The move comes on the heels of South Carolina, which days ago put an end to Common Core—setting precedent for other states to follow.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley quietly signed a bill withdrawing the state from Common Core, but Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, also a Republican, was not shy about stating her reasons for pulling her state from the national standards.

“We are capable of developing our own Oklahoma academic standards that will be better than Common Core,” Fallin said in a statement released by her office. “Unfortunately, federal overreach has tainted Common Core. President Obama and Washington bureaucrats have usurped Common Core in an attempt to influence state education standards."

“The results are predictable,” Fallin added. “What should have been a bipartisan policy is now widely regarded as the president’s plan to establish federal control of curricula, testing and teaching strategies.”

Oklahoma poised to become second state to repeal Common Core

Oklahoma is poised to become the second state to repeal Common Core, reports Oklahoma City NBC affiliate KFOR.

House Bill 3399 would pave for the way for Oklahoma residents to agree upon their own math and English standards. It would also bar prohibit the federal government from imposing any curriculum on the state’s students either directly or indirectly.

The bill has passed the Oklahoma Senate 37-10.

The Senate bill must now be revisited in Oklahoma’s State House (where it originated) and then signed by the governor to become law.

Common Core has come under immense and withering criticism this entire academic year from parents, teachers and school administrators. Opposition has brought together conservatives who are opposed to centralized public education and leftists who deplore ever-more standardized testing....

Late last month, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence affixed his signature to Senate Bill 91, a law ordering public K-12 schools across The Hoosier State to stop using the controversial education standards.

ObamaCare's Next Legal Challenge

While the president's health law is vast and extraordinarily complex, it is in one respect very simple. Subsidies are only to be made available, and tax penalties for not signing up for health insurance are only to be assessed, in states that create their own health-care exchange. The IRS, however, is attempting to enforce tax penalties in all states—including Oklahoma and the majority of the other states that have declined to create their own exchanges. Citizens and businesses in these states must use the federal exchange instead.

The distinction is critical, because under the terms of the law it is the availability of government insurance-premium subsidies that triggers the penalties against businesses if they fail to provide their employees with health insurance that the administration deems acceptable. This is a huge problem for the administration, which desperately needs to hand out tax credits and subsidies to the citizenry to quash the swelling backlash against the law....

While much time has been devoted in Washington to the issue of "defunding" the Affordable Care Act, the success of these lawsuits would have much the same effect. Should the courts decide the IRS is exceeding its authority and isn't allowed to assess the employer penalties in states that have not established their own exchanges, the structure of the ACA will crumble—as one of the primary mechanisms the federal government has employed to force people into the health-insurance market evaporates.

As much as we wish the government were run like a business, the administration cannot "improve" upon legislation passed by Congress by rolling out updates in the manner that Silicon Valley does. That's not permitted under the Constitution: Congress passes laws, the president executes them. Period. That's why Oklahoma and other states are fighting to stop the administration's attempt to "fix" the health-care law through executive fiat.

NFRW Capital Connection, Week of May 24, 2013

◼ An Update on the Oklahoma Federation, Post-Tornado

The Oklahoma Federation has three local clubs with members in the Moore area which was recently hit by severe tornadoes--Cleveland County RW, Helen Cole RW, and Liberty RW. Oklahoma Federation President Sue Thompson has spoken with each of the Club Presidents on the status of their members. Cleveland County RW identified one member who had lost her home. Helen Cole RW has several members who either lost their homes or had heavy damage. Liberty RW reported that all members are fine at this time.

Our prayers are with the Oklahoma Federation members and all Oklahoma residents who have been so sadly affected by the storms.

◼ South East Region 7 Conference to be Held in July

The South East Region 7 Conference hosted by the Georgia Federation of Republican Women will be held from July 19--20, 2013 at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel and Convention Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The program will include VIP receptions and dinner, state GOP speakers, and legislative updates. Pre-register online at www.gfrw.org.

◼ NFRW Campaign School Coming to Ohio

NFRW is organizing a campaign management school in Mansfield, Ohio for Saturday, June 29th. The cost is $100, which includes lunch and materials. The school will be held at The Waterford in Mansfield; Mansfield lies between Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. Register at www.nfrw.org.

◼ NFRW 37th Biennial Convention in Kentucky

Plan now to attend the National Federation of Republican Women's 37th biennial convention in Louisville, Kentucky September 21-22, 2013. Invited speakers include Kentucky's United States Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, along with governors, members of Congress, and leadership experts.

A leadership training institute will be presented on Friday, September 20, followed by the opening reception to be held at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. Campaign and election workshops will be offered along with two special luncheons, the second of which will be the national awards luncheon. Elections will be held for NFRW officers for the 2014 through 2015 term and convention business including proposed NFRW Bylaw amendments will be conducted.

Hotel reservations at the Galt House in Louisville and site of the convention may now be made by clicking here. Convention registration will begin in late May.

◼ Caring For America Deadline Approaching

All clubs should mail in their entries for Caring for America to their respective State Caring for America Chairman. In the absence of a State Caring for America Chair, entries should be sent to the State Federation President. There are two relevant forms: one for the State Project and the second for local club projects. Both were listed on the nfrw.org website in the digital library. The deadline for submission is June 1, 2013, and all projects should include supporting documentation.

State Caring for America Chairman or the State President are responsible for reviewing and signing off on all projects and forwarding them to their respective Caring for America Regional Vice Chairman. All entries will be judged on a regional level. The deadline for forwarding Caring for America projects to Regional Vice Chairman is June 30, 2013. There will be no exceptions to the deadline.

A regional winner will be forwarded to the Caring for America Committee. The national winner will be announced at the NFRW Convention in Louisville, Kentucky in September.

The Oklahoma Red Cross is asking people to donate by texting Red Cross to 90999 which will be a $10 donation, spokesman Ken Garcia said.

Garcia said the donations allow the Red Cross purchase needed supplies.

Those who are looking for family members can visit ◼ www.safeandwell.org, Garcia said. Local Red Cross units will be dispatched throughout the damaged area tonight.

“We’re still assessing what we need and where we will be setting up shelters,” Garcia said. “We obviously don’t want to get in the way of rescuers and we want to make sure it is safe but we know this will be a national relief effort.”

Oklahoma House Passes Obamacare Nullification Bill

◼ Now that the bill has passed the House, it’s headed for the Senate. Representative Ritze thinks the chances of the bill making it to the Governor’s desk is 50/50. And if the Governor does sign the bill into law, expect the feds to throw a fit like they did when Texas tried to nullify the TSA. - Godfather Politics

State Representative Mike Ritze, a doctor and surgeon himself, has been a fierce opponent of Obamacare since its inception. He made headlines last summer when he introduced legislation that would not only render Obamacare null and void, but also would criminalize any federal agent attempting to enforce Obamacare mandates and regulations inside the state of Oklahoma.

Now that the Oklahoma state house is back in session, the bill was voted on and passed by a vote of 72 to 20. Even though the bill differs from its original form in that it no longer imposes fines and jail times for those federal agents seeking to enforce the federal healthcare law in Oklahoma, it does still acknowledge that the law is unconstitutional and renders it null and void inside state borders.

Stunner: Obama loses Dem primary in 15 Oklahoma counties

Oklahoma earned the nickname "reddest of the red" states after Obama's failed to win a single county in the 2008 presidential race.

While the Republican primaries have gotten all the attention, many of the states that have voted have also held Democratic primaries or caucuses — and in Oklahoma's primary on Tuesday, President Obama only won 57 percent of the vote....

Coming in second with 18 percent of the vote was Randall Terry, a pro-life activist who founded Operation Rescue, which made its reputation blocking abortion clinics. And in third place was Jim Rogers, an Oklahoman who was Democrats' nominee for the U.S. Senate in 2010 and who won 14 percent of the vote.

President Obama will not win the Democratic nomination unanimously after a pro-life activist won 18 percent of the votes in Oklahoma’s primary on Tuesday, ensuring he’ll win delegates to the national nominating convention in September.

As polls closed on Super Tuesday, Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich were dividing up Republican primary votes around the nation, with each winning important states , but the key battleground of Ohio remained too close to call.

Romney won Republican presidential primaries in Virginia, Vermont and Massachusetts, the state he served as governor, while Santorum snagged an important victory in Tennessee and also won Oklahoma. Gingrich boosted his struggling campaign with a victory in his home state of Georgia.

In Ohio, Romney was battling Santorum, a former senator from Pennsylvania who has emerged as his chief rival in the tumultuous Republican presidential primary fight. The contest remained too close to call. Official results have not come in from North Dakota, where caucuses ended at 8 p.m. Eastern time....

In all, more than 400 delegates will be awarded Tuesday, more than the combined total of all 12 states that have voted so far. That won’t be enough to give any of the candidates the nomination, but Super Tuesday could still be super enough to reshape the primary season.

Mr. Romney did less well than usual with some of his of the groups that have provided him the most supporters in the past. While Mr. Santorum won less-educated voters, he essentially tied Mr. Romney among the better educated, which has not been the usual pattern.

Mr. Santorum did well among strong Tea Party supporters, but he he also did well among those less supportive of the Tea Party movement.

Like the voters in other states, 4 in 10 Tennessee voters said Mr. Romney was most likely to defeat Mr. Obama in November.

Gallup: Gingrich on the Rise

◼ What’s up with Newt Gingrich? Gallup’s daily tracking poll, for one thing - HotAir

Gingrich has a comfortable lead in Georgia; the RCP poll average puts him nine points ahead of his competitors in his home state. He doesn’t, however, fare nearly so well in the other states he’s supposedly targeting. In Ohio, for example, Gingrich polls at an average of 18 percent, behind Santorum’s 34.3 percent and Mitt Romney’s 26 percent. In Tennessee, Gingrich polls in fourth place, according to the Vanderbilt poll. Oklahoma looks similarly unconquerable for Gingrich.

Yet, today, Gingrich has at least one bit of poll improvement to tout: His Gallup support rating jumped two points today. With his personal life out of the limelight and his ideas about energy policy front-and-center, at least a few folks apparently have remembered Gingrich ain’t all bad.

Newt Gingrich has engineered two comebacks already. Is a third out of the realm of possibility? Never say never.

Last week's decision on the Keystone XL pipeline (a decision that Oklahoma Democratic Party Chairman Wallace Collins defended) is just the latest example of a Democrat Party that is wholly antithetical to the values and priorities of most Oklahomans...."

"This is no longer your granddaddy's Democrat Party. Democrats are pursuing an agenda that favors far left environmentalists over middle-class American jobs, an agenda that seeks to divide Americans along class lines, and an agenda that promotes an ever-increasing federal role in all facets of life.
