Sacramento Democrats are trying to jam through hundreds of millions in tax hikes, but thanks to Prop. 13 they can't raise taxes without a supermajority vote.

As more people leave the Bay Area, local moving companies are struggling to keep up.

...From Santa Rosa to San Jose, more and more residents are making the bittersweet decision to leave the Bay Area, abandoning its near-perfect weather, booming economy and thriving arts, culture and food scenes in favor of less-glamorous destinations like Austin, Boise and Knoxville.

Some are fleeing the Bay Area's sky-high housing and rent prices, both among the most expensive in the nation. Others are cashing out, selling their homes to get more for their money in a less expensive city. Nearly all of them are fed up with miserable, hours-long commutes on snarled freeways.

More people are leaving the Bay Area than are moving in...

How Control of Congress Could Swing on a Fight to Repeal California’s Gas Tax

...California is one of the highest-taxed states in the nation. President Trump and congressional Republicans have repeatedly assailed California for its taxes. And John Cox, a Republican candidate for governor, has embraced the repeal of the gas tax as a centerpiece of his uphill campaign against Gavin Newsom, the Democratic candidate....

California Republicans have seized on the issue. Taxes have long been a point of divisions between Republicans and Democrats, and all the more so since Mr. Trump and congressional Republicans enacted a tax reform bill that severely reduced deductions for state and local taxes, posing a particular burden for California homeowners. Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican who is the House majority leader and looking to become its next speaker, has contributed money to the repeal in an effort to save seven Republican congressional seats.

Mr. Cox said he had found a “ton of support” for the repeal.

“Whenever I am out campaigning, I always talk to working people — valet parking people, the desk clerks, the people behind the counter,” he said. “I ask people what do they think about the cost of living and the gas tax. And they say: ‘We can’t take this. We had to move an extra 20 miles away because we couldn’t find an apartment we could afford. And now we are sitting in traffic burning up gasoline at almost $5 a gallon.’”

“Mr. Brown and Mr. Newsom are being dishonest when they say these projects will come to a halt if we don’t have this tax,” he said. “They know that these road projects could be done if we changed work rules, if we used money more efficiently, if we cut better deals to make the process more efficiently.”

A U.S.C. Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll in May found 38 percent of voters said they supported the gas tax, a perilously low number...

Californians are willing to repeal the gas tax, but...

A movement began to repeal the tax by referendum and a petition to do so quickly amassed far more than the needed number of signatures. Now, a new poll indicates that support for the repeal measure has reached majority numbers. But there’s more going on here than just the removal of a set of taxes and fees. (LA Times)

...The economy in California works out fabulously for celebrities and the mega-wealthy. But for most rank and file workers, it’s virtually impossible to afford a house anywhere in the state that’s even marginally habitable. Businesses and workers are already fleeing the state in the more expensive areas, yet residents still seem to be fine with the idea of taxing “somebody else” as long as their gas prices don’t go up further....

70 year old Sonoma manufacturing business moving to Idaho

It’s the end of an era. Price Pump has grown and thrived in Sonoma for 70 years. But before the end of this year, the manufacturer of high-tech pumps will pull up stakes and move its headquarters – lock, stock and pump – to Boise, Idaho.

“It has simply become too difficult and too costly to run a manufacturing business in Sonoma Valley,” said Price Pump President Bob Piazza....

“I don’t love change,” he said, “But the way things are going, we don’t have a choice.”

...One of his employees is 66 years old and has never worked anyplace other than Price Pump.

“When he said he would move with us, I was surprised,” said Piazza. “But he explained to me that he had planned to work until 70 and it would be hard to get a different job now, but even more… he realized that when he ran the numbers, he wouldn’t even be able to retire in Sonoma at 70.”

Another employee lost his house during the 2009 recession and he’s moving because, he told Piazza, it will be give him a chance to be a homeowner again.

“He gets to keep the same pay, move someplace less expensive and he’ll get a moving allowance and be able to buy a house,” said Piazza.

Piazza’s employees have been pleased to find that they can buy a house in the Boise area that is comparable to their home in Sonoma for less half the cost....

Humboldt County marijuana growers aren't so thrilled with "legalization" that means costly regulation

...Humboldt County, traditionally shorthand for outlaw culture and the great dope it produces, is facing a harsh reckoning. Every trait that made this strip along California’s wild northwest coast the best place in the world to grow pot is now working against its future as a producer in the state’s $7 billion-a-year marijuana market.

A massive industry never before regulated is being tamed by laws and taxation, characteristically extensive in this state. Nowhere is this process upending a culture and economy more than here in Humboldt, where tens of thousands of people who have been breaking the law for years are being asked to hire accountants, tax lawyers and declare themselves to a government they have famously distrusted....

...Wilson estimates that “Fewer than 1 in 10 of the county’s estimated 12,500 marijuana farmers are likely to make it in the legal trade….Less than 1 percent of the estimated 69,000 growers statewide have received a permit to farm marijuana since the beginning of the year.”

As many experts on drug prohibition predicted, prices are dropping in the legalized market. But for Humboldt and neighboring counties, the price drop is happening...

The Democratic Party Has Ruined California. But not Californians Like Me

...The problem isn’t the state, but the Democrats along with the greedy rapacious public sector union lobby, the welfare queens, and let's not forget the illegal aliens who are over running, invading our state. Hunter has the wrong attitude about California, even if he was only kidding. Still, his biting hatred for the disgusting communism overrunning the state of California is not original with him. John Stossel suggested that California should secede, and at least three groups have sought to place a #Calexit initiative on the ballot. Two other initiatives want to create a “New California” or split the state up into three parts.

To all you cynics out there, California is worth fighting for, and President Trump is proving that. California was and still is the true heartbeat of the Trump movement. Before Trump had declared his candidacy, patriots lined up outside of Murrieta in 2014 and turned away the buses still with illegal aliens. Breitbart News is based in California, which helped showcase the awful, unconscionable murder of Kate Steinle in sanctuary city San Francisco. Stephen Miller, the outspoken policy advisor on illegal immigration, comes from the People’s Republic of Santa Monica, and many of the conservative policy wonks making the case for protecting our borders and our culture learned from the best at Claremont-McKenna college … in California.....

Let us also not forget that to this day, Californians have exposed treasonous DACA meetings hosted by our elected officials, and we have shut down lawless Attorney General Xavier Becerra three times. From 15 Californians who stood up against 25,000 George Soros puppets at LAX airport just nine days after Trump’s inauguration, Californians across the state are now fighting back, reminding the country that we are Americans who love our country, but definitely do not trust our government. There are millions of citizens in California who are still Americans, regardless of their political affiliation.

Californians: Your government is not your friend.

...in one of those only-in-California budget formulas, filling the rainy day fund presents a different kind of problem for legislators.

If they want to use the windfall of today’s booming economy for other priorities, like paying down debt, they’d have to actually spend money before filling the rainy day fund. Otherwise, the additional revenue would have to be spent on infrastructure like roads and prison repairs.

That’s right, California lawmakers might have to spend money to save it....

Democrat governors planning lawsuit to block GOP’s tax overhaul

Legal Insurrection readers will recall the California legislature’s attempt to create a special government fund as a “charity” for taxpayer donations to mitigate the loss of state and local tax (SALT) deductions in the recently passed GOP tax plans.

The politicians must have realized the approach was full of fail, so now leaders of several blue states are planning a lawsuit to block the entire overhaul package. California may join in....

Bloomberg offers a humorous and in-depth look at the Blue States’ desperation at the loss of the SALT deductions and all of their proposed solutions. The assessment of the legal experts consulted on this particular proposal is that the governors’ case is dead-on-arrival:
…[The lawsuit] is an intriguing strategy. But alas for the citizens of New York State, probably a doomed one.

I spoke to Michael Dorf, a law professor at Cornell who recently outlined the possible lines of attack that such a suit could take. For one thing, they could argue federalism, a tack that even conservative judges should find appealing. “There’s an argument that the Sixteenth Amendment does not empower the federal government to treat money that is owed to state and local governments as part of the tax base,” he said. “If you go back to the Sixteenth Amendment it’s clear that states were concerned about this at the time of the drafting.”

The problem? “The hard part there for the plaintiff states, while that was a concern for the people who adopted the Sixteenth Amendment, it’s not anywhere in the amendment.”

…Jonathan Adler, who teaches law at Case Western, was even more pungent, and succinct. While we don’t know what form the complaint will eventually take, since the states haven’t yet drafted it, “What we have seen [so far] would suggest that there is some sort of constitutional right to a SALT deduction. To state the claim is to refute it.”
