Preserve and protect Prop. 13

Multiple revisions of the landmark tax-limitation measure are pending in the California Legislature - Orange County Register EDITORIAL

California's Proposition 13 has protected property owners from government's voracious appetite for taxes since its overwhelming passage in 1978. While virtually every other tax, and a good number of new ones, have lurched upward since then, the landmark protection authored by tax-fighting activists Howard Jarvis and Paul Gann froze taxes on property at 1 percent of assessed value and limited annual increases to 2 percent....

Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff of Diamond Bar told us that 63 tax-related bills have been introduced this session, an indication of how eager the majority party is to rewrite tax law. We urge restraint. Prop. 13 has served California well as other taxes and costs of living have increased. It is one of the few restraints on rising real estate prices that make homeownership difficult for middle-class and low-income families, and it is one of the few advantages California businesses enjoy when comparing costs in other states.
