The legislation, cosponsored by 46 Republicans, would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for instances of rape, incest, or critical health risks for the mother. Why 20 weeks? Fetuses can feel pain and can survive a premature birth at five months of development.

Several Senate Democrats have indicated they will join with Republicans to vote yes on the measure.

Polling shows that roughly HALF of *Democrats* support a mainstream ban on elective abortions in months 6-9 of pregnancy.

There are 242 Democrats in Congress. Six of them voted for this consensus reform. Six.

Once upon a time, liberals portrayed the procedure of abortion as a thing regrettable but sometimes necessary. This was the cottony, “safe, legal, and rare” piety of yesteryear. That old rhetorical dressing has been ripped off for good. Today, The Daily Show is taking a tut-tutting in the media for having tweeted to its 4.25 million followers a comment that some find tasteless: “Celebrate the #SCOTUS ruling! Go knock someone up in Texas!” The indignation is faux. Under the logic of secularist progressivism today, the only thing regrettable about abortion is that there isn’t more of it.

◼ Texas blogger Ben Sherman, who considers himself to be staunchly “bro-choice,” vomited up a post last week bemoaning the many horrible effects that the Texas abortion bill would have on straight men.

Here’s the kicker:

Your sex life is at stake. Can you think of anything that kills the vibe faster than a woman fearing a back-alley abortion? Making abortion essentially inaccessible in Texas will add an anxiety to sex that will drastically undercut its joys. And don’t be surprised if casual sex outside of relationships becomes far more difficult to come by.

Because nothing says “I’m a man who cares deeply about women’s needs” like whining about not getting any.
