Worse Than Watergate

We are on the cusp of what is probably the biggest scandal in US history. The deep state has sought to undermine President Trump through a series of illegal leaks and secret judicial proceedings as spying has been exposed.

Even worse, their rationale for the surveillance of the Republican nominee for the president has proven to be entirely speculative and nakedly political....

We have established that there are no contacts between the Trump campaign and the Russian state. It is now only a matter of to getting to the bottom of who ordered the subversion of the Constitution and the spying on an American presidential candidate in order to derail his election and the Democratic process, precisely what Richard M. Nixon went down for.

'Worse than Watergate'

“This is the greatest scandal in the history of the United States,” Caddell said. “They all ought to be indicted. This is worse than Watergate.”

Clinton, he explained, would soon be exposed for using her connections in the State Department to enrich her family, her foundation, and her supporters.

“They were selling out the national interests of the United States directly to adversaries and others for money,” he said. “There is just nothing that satisfies them. They are the greediest white trash I have ever seen.”

YEAH, BUT THEY’RE NOT JOURNALISTS NOW, THEY’RE DEMOCRATIC OPERATIVES WITH BYLINES

Woodward said, "The reality now in my view that in the Obama administration, there are lots of unanswered questions about the IRS, particularly. If I were young, I would take Carl Bernstein and move to Cincinnati where that IRS office is and set up headquarters and go talk to everyone."

“Even as Congressional Democrats were calling for an end to the Benghazi investigation with false claims that everything had been turned over and examined, the State Department was hiding this e-mail and other documents covered by the Committee’s August 2013 subpoena”

◼ Congress only saw latest Benghazi e-mail two weeks ago - Ed Morrisey/HotAir
Yesterday’s blockbuster release of a Ben Rhodes e-mail took the media by surprise yesterday, which had for months shrugged at demands to ask more questions about Benghazi. That was old news until the September 14, 2012 memo from the White House adviser surfaced, stipulating that Susan Rice’s appearances on news programs less than two days later had the goal of convincing people that the attack that killed four Americans was not brought on by “a broader failure of policy,” by stressing that “these protests are rooted in an Internet video.” The White House had insisted for almost a year that it had released all of the communications relating to the Rice talking points, both to Congress and the press.
◼ Obama Administration Accused Of Slow Walking Congress On Benghazi - Eli Lake/Daily Beast
An important email on Benghazi that showed the White House's role in the election season spin about the attack was only made available to a key Congressional committee two weeks ago.

Almost since Congress began investigating the Benghazi attacks of September 11, 2012 in Libya, the White House has stressed its unprecedented cooperation with lawmakers seeking to get to the bottom of the attack that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Those claims were challenged Tuesday after the conservative watchdog group, Judicial Watch published an email from deputy national security adviser, Ben Rhodes to senior administration officials on what they should say about the Benghazi attacks.

...“Even as Congressional Democrats were calling for an end to the Benghazi investigation with false claims that everything had been turned over and examined, the State Department was hiding this e-mail and other documents covered by the Committee’s August 2013 subpoena,” the committee’s deputy staff director, Frederick Hill told The Daily Beast.

Hill added, “It is disturbing that this highly important e-mail showing a White House role in pushing a false narrative was only turned over after it was discovered by the Department’s FOIA office in response to a specific request. While he had promised cooperation, by hiding subpoenaed documents from Congress, Secretary Kerry is failing to meet his legal obligations.”

Yes, The White House Did Tell Susan Rice To Lie About Benghazi

◼ More than 100 pages of documents - Jim Treacher/Daily Caller
◼ Email Shows White House Planned Benghazi Video Deception - Neil Munro/Daily Caller
White House officials consciously planned to spin the successful 2012 jihadi attack on the Benghazi diplomatic compound as a spontaneous protest against an anti-Islam video, according to a new email exposed by the public-interest law firm Judicial Watch.

The Sept. 14 email by Ben Rhodes, President Obama’s chief foreign policy spokesman, described the public relations goals for a planned briefing of a top official — Susan Rice — who was scheduled to appear Sept. 16 on five Sunday talk-shows.

She was invited on the shows to explain the September 11 attack, which killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans. The subject of the email was “PREP CALL with Susan.”
◼ Benghazi Emails Show White House Effort to Protect Obama - Washington Free Beacon
Previously unreleased internal Obama administration emails show that a coordinated effort was made in the days following the Benghazi terror attacks to portray the incident as “rooted in [an] Internet video, and not [in] a broader failure or policy.”

...The newly released internal White House e-mails show that Rice’s orders came from top Obama administration communications officials.
◼ BENGHAZI BOMBSHELL: EMAILS PROVE THE ‘VIDEO PROTEST’ DECEPTION WAS DIRECTLY ORDERED BY THE WHITE HOUSE - John Hayward/Human Events @Doc_o
All that spin from Obama apologists, gone in an instant. All those questions about the original of the false “video protest” narrative pushed by the White House to save Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, answered at a stroke. Yes, it was all a lie, and the White House knew it.

They ordered it, for blatantly political purposes, and kept the proof secret until Judicial Watch finally managed to uncover some long-suppressed correspondence with a Freedom of Information Act request....
None of these documents are exactly “shocking,” because they buttress exactly what critics of the Administration have been saying all along. It’s another great example of Obama’s strategy for political survival by “winning,” or at least enduring, one news cycle at a time. Bombshell revelations lose their explosive force over time. Emails that would have ended the 2012 presidential campaign are now a historical footnote. The Obama-friendly mainstream press is unlikely to bring the story they’ve been trying to bury for the past two years back to the front pages, just to inform their readers that all of spin they previously delivered was invalid. Critics of President Obama and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were 100 percent right all along… but as the latter so memorably put it, “what difference, at this point, does it make?”
◼ New Benghazi Emails Mean Obama Impeachment Trial Must Be Launched - Roger L Simon/PJMedia
I didn’t know how right I was when I wrote on September 29, 2012 ◼ “Benghazi Worse then Watergate.”

With the release of new emails it is spectacularly worse — so bad in fact that it has made a full investigation with an impeachment trial necessary for the protection of our republic.

...The levels of criminality involved in this are mind-boggling. Everyone from Ben Rhodes to Hillary Clinton to Jay Carney to Susan Rice to Mike Morell to Barack Obama and on and on must explain themselves minute-by-minute. American “liberals” and their media consorts should search their souls. People died here....

Anyone who now considers Benghazi a “fake scandal” is a either a complete liar or a moron. This new release of emails thanks to Judicial Watch is literally a call to arms. We will now see if there is even a figment of honesty in our mainstream media and if our elected representatives are to be trusted in any way.
◼ Newly released Benghazi documents reinforce that White House was pushing that video was to blame - Jake Tapper/CNN
These newly released documents include “TOPLINE POINTS” in question and answer form, prepared by the national security staff, apparently part of the briefing for Susan Rice, then the U.N. ambassador, in preparation for her appearance on Sunday interview shows.

REPORT: DOJ gives 'journalist' status to liberal who bugged Mitch McConnell's office

◼ Justice Department prosecutors in Washington are now part of a high-profile criminal investigation into the secret taping at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s campaign headquarters in Louisville. - Politico

The furor over Morrison’s actions began after an April report in Mother Jones magazine about the McConnell campaign meeting. Morrison, who worked for a liberal group called Progress Kentucky, has admitted that he taped the private conversation between McConnell and his campaign aides Feb. 2, including discussion of potential attack lines against actress Ashley Judd, who was considering running against McConnell.

Following Mother Jones’s publication of Morrison’s recording, McConnell suggested Democrats were acting in “Nixonian fashion” by “bugging” his campaign headquarters. The FBI quickly became involved in the case, interviewing McConnell and his staff. Morrison was fired from his job as a freelance reporter for the publication Insider Louisville.

Sources familiar with the McConnell case said the heightened involvement of Main Justice — as the Justice Department headquarters is known — appears to have slowed down what had been a rapidly moving investigation.

Report: McConnell bugger met with liberal group in White House in December

◼ The head of a group accused of illegally taping private meetings of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s campaign visited the White House days before the group’s twitter account began actively attacking the Kentucky Republican, according to White House visitors logs. - Sean Higgins/News.ok

◼ Alleged McConnell Bugger Visited White House - John Stanton/Buzzfeed

Days before Progress Kentucky launched a Twitter offensive against Mitch McConnell, its executive director met with White House officials....

For days, Democrats in the state and nationally have sought to cast the duo as a pair of bungling amateurs who simply got in over their heads and made a series of bad decisions. But the White House visit suggests the distance from Reilly to his party's leaders may not have been quite that far.

The White House visitors log, showing Reilly met with administration officials Dec. 5th, appears to have been signed in by Victoria McCullough, a staff assistant to Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett.

◼ According to Reilly’s twitter feed, his trip to Washington included stops at the White House to discuss the fiscal cliff and a meeting at the Center for American Progress, a left leaning think tank. - Sean Higgins/Washington Examiner

◼ Investigation: Why did David Corn Run with a False McConnell Tape Transcript? - Bryan Preston/PJM

...The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a complaint shortly after the tape’s release, amplified by the liberal Huffington Post, claiming that it provided evidence that Sen. McConnell has used official congressional staff to conduct opposition research on Judd (who, not to belabor the point, is no longer even a candidate and never officially was one).

The blockbuster that Corn believed he had was encapsulated in a few words: “thank them three times.” Those words are the basis of the CREW charge that McConnell has used legislative assistants or legislative aides (“LAs” on the tape) for political opposition research. Corn transcribes that passage as follows:
Presenter: So I’ll just preface my comments that this reflects the work of a lot of folks: Josh, Jesse, Phil Maxson, a lot of LAs, thank them three times, so this is a compilation of work, all the way through. The first person we’ll focus on…
But what if no one on the tape ever said those words in bold?

The Louisville Courier-Journal took the noisy 12-minute audio and cleaned it up to determine what the speaker actually says on the tape. The newspaper determined that the legislative aide did not say “thanked them three times,” but instead said “on their free time.” So the transcript should read:
Presenter: So I’ll just preface my comments that this reflects the work of a lot of folks: Josh, Jesse, Phil Maxson, a lot of LAs, on their free time, so this is a compilation of work, all the way through. The first person we’ll focus on…
The Weekly Standard’s Daniel Helper came to a similar conclusion. Those words make all the difference in the world. If the “thank them three times” interpretation is correct, then the phrase may be evidence backing up CREW’s complaint. But “on their free time” makes it clear that the work was not done on the taxpayer’s clock and therefore there is no basis for the complaint at all.

Corn says that he had the audio for two weeks before he released it into the wild, while he vetted it with lawyers. But did he ever have a sound engineer attempt to clean up the audio, if only to make sure that he was getting the transcript and interpretation correctly? (Audio, at the link)

Democrat recants story of Kentucky Progress members taping McConnell meeting

◼ The Democrat who implicated two members of the liberal super PAC Progress Kentucky in the secret taping of a campaign strategy meeting for Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell is changing his story. - FOX

Jacob Conway, a member of the Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee, said Friday he might have talked to only one of the men he accused, ◼ according to The Courier-Journal.

Conway told the newspaper he is certain he talked with volunteer Curtis Morrison about the recording, but might not have spoken with Executive Director Shawn Reilly, contradicting what he said a day earlier.
“I had a lot of conversations with both of them during that time period, and maybe I was just confused, and maybe Shawn never said anything,” Conway said.

...Conway changed his story after a lawyer for Reilly said Conway lied about his client’s role. The lawyer also said Reilly had complied with FBI and U.S. attorney office probes.

The newspaper story also points out Conway made a plea agreement in 2006 to felony theft charges.

(Shouse pointed out a 2005 criminal case in which Conway was accused of stealing money from the office safe at the Jefferson County attorney’s office while working as a clerk there, as well as from the Log Cabin Republicans, a national GOP group that advocates equality for gays and lesbians.

Conway entered an Alford plea in 2006 to felony theft by unlawful taking, meaning he did not admit guilt but agreed there was enough evidence to convict him. He was put on diversion and agreed to pay $2,800 to the county attorney’s office and $670 to the Log Cabin Republicans.)

BIG BREAK in Watergate case, Where's Woodward? Bernstein?

◼ KENTUCKY DEMOCRATIC OFFICIAL NOW IMPLICATES PROGRESSIVE GROUP IN MCCONNELL BUGGING STORY - The Blaze

WFPL-Louisville reports:
Jacob Conway, who is on the executive committee of the Jefferson County Democratic Party, says that day, Shawn Reilly and Curtis Morrison, who founded and volunteered for Progress Kentucky, respectively, bragged to him about how they recorded the meeting.

Conway says neither the local nor the state Democratic party had any part in the incident.[...]
The Kentucky-based liberal group Progress Kentucky is no stranger to controversy for its unremitting attacks on Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Having already been responsible for the racist attack on McConnell’s wife, former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, the group allegedly has decided to try a new tack: Using private statements by McConnell and/or his aides to generate controversy.

McConnell had previously pointed a finger at Progress Kentucky as the organization responsible for the “bug,” but had backed off prior to this announcement. Now, it seems McConnell’s original suspicion may have been right.

Morrison and Reilly have not themselves spoken to the media on the subject of this bit of eavesdropping. Conway, however, has made a point of clarifying what happened both to WFPL and Fox News, so as to maintain plausible deniability on the part of the Kentucky Democratic party.

McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton isn’t convinced. “They certainly weren’t authorized to be there,” he explained to Megyn Kelly on Fox. “I think what’s even more disturbing are the tactics that the Left is prepared to resort to.”

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

By the way, remember when the left pretended that they thought somebody like Donald Segretti was a bad guy?

◼ As Heads is Tails: - Ed Driscoll/PJM

Apparently, President Nixon is now so rehabilitated in the left’s eyes that Watergate is now a how-to guide, not a warning... CNN reports:
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s re-election campaign is “working with the FBI” on how Mother Jones, a liberal magazine, obtained a recording of political aides meeting with McConnell and discussing opposition research on Ashley Judd, McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton told CNN Tuesday….

“Obviously a recording device of some kind was placed in Senator McConnell’s campaign office without consent. By whom and how that was accomplished will presumably be the subject of a criminal investigation,” Benton said in a statement.
Or to put it another way, “Mother Jones either published audio which was illegally recorded or endorsed @JamesOKeefeIII’s style of journalism.” Not to mention, “Hypocrisy: Mother Jones Writer Behind McConnell Bugging Railed Against Bush Wiretapping.”
