A bitter truth, often glossed over in the name of "tradition," is the religious teachings and the responsibilities of a Muslim woman. Most glossed over is the violence that men are still allowed to inflict on their women in the name of their religion and culture on such a massive part of the planet.

This brutality not only takes place in ISIS-held territory but across most Muslim societies. All around you, you see women killed, molested, imprisoned, maimed and incarcerated while their men sugar-coat the abuse as "modesty", "honour", "divine law" or even "justice"....

Turkey last year presented a bill for tackling its widespread child-marriage issue: the Turkish government introduced a bill that pardons a rapist if he marries his victim. The victim is not consulted.

All forms of exploiting women are presented as divine law, sharia, in which women have no say, which they are unable to use in their own defence, and which they are forced to accept as their fate.

These are countries where men are not only permitted, but invited, to consider woman a pet -- to be killed, burned with acid, benzene or a weapon of choice supposedly to preserve a family's "honour".

These laws, put in place by the governments and the clergy, provide a safe escape for criminals, such as those who kill their women and claim it is in the name of "honour".

The deeper horror is that all these abuses -- child marriage, confinement, FGM, rape, torture, and legal discrimination -- have accomplices. These enablers are often well-meaning people from the West, "multiculturalists" who are reluctant to pass judgement on other people's customs no matter how brutal they might be....

Sitting in the shabby parlour of his temporary home, Haaji Mohammed can barely bring himself to watch the Isil video playing on his mobile phone. The film was made just last month – yet the horrific scenes it shows could be from 500 years ago.

Kneeling before a masked executioner are two men in orange jumpsuits, charged under a statute that drags even the medieval barbarity of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to new depths. The pair are accused of “sorcery”, and just as in witchcraft trials of old, justice is swift, brutal and dispensed to the sound of a baying mob.

As the executioner beheads them with a four-foot scimitar, a crowd of men and boys scream “Allahu Akhbar”, jostling each other for a closer look.

Mr Mohammed is less keen. “I know that man personally,” he says, pointing to the older of the two defendants, whom he names as Said Jabr. “He is not a witch, he is just an alternative healer who does homeopathy and acupuncture. He was wrongly accused.”

Now, the Associated Press reports that one brave and defiant Iraqi woman — a highly educated lawyer — who was standing up for the rights of her fellow citizens has been publicly executed by fighters for the Islamic State....

It was apparently a post on Facebook that led to Samira Salih al-Nuaimi being seized from her home in Mosul a week ago. That social media message was allegedly critical of the Islamic militants’ destruction of religious sites, according to the AP report....

In April 2014, the Islamist group Boko Haram (which means “Western education is a sin”) kidnapped over 300 Nigerian teenage girls. The girls were reportedly being auctioned off for $12 each to become wives, or worse. So when Michelle Obama launched her public #BringBackOurGirls campaign, I was hopeful that this might possibly bring awareness to the Islamic jihad against women. In spite of her husband’s support of all-things-Islam, it seemed like maybe, just maybe, Michelle could bring attention to the evils of Islam, the way she did when she told everyone they were fat!

But alas, that hope soon faded. As is usually the case in Hollywood, the “trend” quickly dissipated, and everyone quickly forgot about the Nigerian teenage girls. In truth it’s doubtful any of the celebrities holding their hashtag selfies ever actually understood the barbarity of Boko Haram and other Islamic groups – and by their lack of interest, perhaps they never really cared about “Our Girls” at all. The media went back to reporting about Beyonce and J-Zee’s marital problems and the new season of “Honey Boo Boo.” They moved on to the more pressing American issues that they believe substantiate the imaginary American War on Women, including Hobby Lobby not giving workers as many free birth control options as they wanted....

On a recent panel about Islam on “The Sean Hannity Show,” liberal Tamara Holder denigrated two of the biggest defenders of women’s rights, Brigitte Gabriel of ACT! For America and Jamie Glazov, editor of Front Page Magazine. Both Brigitte and Jamie are activists who continuously call out the evils of Islam. They write and speak about honor killings, beheadings and the insidious spread of Shariah across the world – and yet Holder (and many on the left) deems them, and not Islam, “dangerous.”

If Christian churches began condoning acid attacks, family murder, pedophilia or genital mutilation, one can only imagine the outcry from the media and people like Tamara Holder, but I digress …
