The 5 Most Egregious Myths About Conservatism

◼ When it has nothing else to do, the liberal establishment will dip into its bulging bag of clichés. Don't fall for these. - Lee Edwards/The Daily Signal

1. The conservative movement is cracking up.
2. The conservative philosophy is irrelevant and out of date.
3. The three-legged stool of social, economic and national security conservatism is breaking down.
4) The tea party is toxic for conservatism.
5) Conservatism is headed for the ash heap of history unless it makes major changes in its philosophy and politics.

Wrong and wrong. Conservatism is the largest political philosophy in America: 40 percent of Americans describe themselves as conservative, 35 percent as moderate, and just 22 percent liberal. When queried about specific issues, moderates lean more to the right than to the left. The current surge of libertarianism, as seen in Sen. Rand Paul’s pre-presidential candidacy, will widen the appeal of the conservative movement.

Culturally, Fox News continues to dominate the world of cable news, Rush Limbaugh remains the No. 1 talk-show host, Cal Thomas is the most widely syndicated newspaper columnist in America, and The Heritage Foundation, in combination with Heritage Action, is the most-often cited think tank in Washington.

The defeats of 2006, 2008 and 2012 were caused by lackluster political leadership and lip service to conservative principles. The elections of 2014 and 2016 afford conservatives an opportunity to forge a governing coalition stretching from the nation’s capital to the state houses and legislatures of red and blue states. Spotlighting Novato Republican Women Federated

◼ Novato RWF

"Being a Republican women’s organization in Marin County is quite a challenge. Marin County is known for hot tubs; and it’s definitely NOT a Republican -friendly zone. But the Novato RWF continually meets the challenge head-on. Formed in 1962, with over 190 members, and over 50 associates, we remain active and growing each year.

Being Republican in “enemy territory” creates a special bond between us all, and we carry that message to our community and our county.

This being an election year, we have our work cut out for us, but we have and continue to tackle it by hosting Republican candidate forums, inviting them to speak at our luncheons, ramping up our voter registration with surprisingly good results, precinct walking, and working at the polls and watching the polls on election day. We have members on the Central Committee, and one of our members serves on the county election committee.

Education, active citizenship and community service are our ways of increasing the effectiveness of women in the cause of good government, and we endeavored to improve upon that this year.

We awarded $5,000 in scholarships to three local college-bound high school students this year, donated flags and books to high schools, and increased our participation in our reading program to preschoolers. This program continues to mean so much to the members personally.

Our popular monthly luncheons have introduced our group and their guests to an amazing group of speakers, Lance Izumi, Debra Bacigalupi, Lanhee Chen, to name a few, as well as our local and state candidates.

On the community service front, we had a successful year with our troop packages, our Valentines for Vets and our support of our Vets by participating at Veteran’s and Memorial Day ceremonies.

And finally, the “F” in Novato RWF is not for “final” but for fun. With our Shotgun Training, Wine Tasting, and our fantastic Fashion Show featuring Alice Becker, let there be no doubt that this group, above all else, has fun."

CALL GOVERNOR BROWN NOW!

There are several bills that we need Governor Brown to hear us on! Contact Governor Brown TODAY and ask him to VETO these bad bills for California!

AB 1522 (Gonzales, D): The good news is that this bill was amended to less of a burden on California employers. The bad news is it is still an unnecessary mandate for employers that will drive even more businesses out of the state and employers will be forced to pass that burden onto consumers. AB 1522 now requires that California employers provide three paid sick leave days to all their employees.

SB 270 (Padilla, D): This narrowly passed bill now bans all plastic bags from grocers and retailers throughout California. Not only a ban, but a tax on Californians, who will now be charged 10 cents to use a paper bag or reusable bag. This will put thousands of plastic bag manufacturer workers out of work in California. This is useless legislation and must be stopped!

SB 1077 (DeSaulnier, D): The recently amended "Road Usage Fees" bill (from "Mileage Based Fees," same function, different name) passed through the legislature and is waiting for Governor Brown's signature. This bill creates a pilot program for the California Transportation Commission to begin to tax California automobile users by the number of miles they drive per day. The tax revenue from gas taxes just isn't the same in California since everyone and their mother drives a hybrid, so the Democrats have gotten creative on how they can take our money. This bill unfairly targets rural drivers who have to drive further for basic necessities and blue collar Californians who commute everyday.

Are the Orcs Winning?

◼ In the 21st century we are often lectured that such simplistic, one-dimensional evil is long gone.... - Victor Davis Hanson/PJMedia

But then suddenly along comes the limb-lopping, child-snatching, and mutilating Nigerian-based Boko Haram. What conceivable Dark Age atrocity have they omitted? Not suicide bombing, mass murder, or random torture. They are absolutely unapologetic for their barbarity. They are ready to convert or kill preteens as their mood determines for the crime of being Christian. In response, the Nigerian government is powerless, while the United States is reduced to our first lady holding up Twitter hashtags, begging for the release of the latest batch of girls....

Now we are glued on ISIS, the Mesopotamian killers who are beheading on video streams American journalists, as they murder, rape, and mutilate their way from Syria to central Iraq. One of the beheaders, Jihadi John, has a British accent, and seems to enjoy shocking Westerners with the fact that he is more familiarly savage than his fellow Arab-speaking masochists. Apparently his family immigrated from the Muslim world to the affluence and freedom of the United Kingdom for a more civilized life so that their pampered son could one day leave it to seek to destroy all that had enabled him — and thereby find “meaning.”

We can stop the roll call of global orcs here, with the assumption that we all know the nature of the lunatic North Korea nuclear regime, what the Iranians are planning for the children of the Holocaust, or who the sinister sort who run Pakistani military intelligence and fund terrorists in Afghanistan are. As state powers, they all have ways of incinerating tens of thousands rather than beheading hundreds.

Evil is ancient, unchanging, and with us always. The more postmodern the West becomes — affluent, leisured, nursed on moral equivalence, utopian pacifism, and multicultural relativism — the more premodern the evil among us seems to arise in nihilistic response, whether it is from the primordial Tsarnaev brothers or Jihadi John. We have invented dozens of new ways to explain away our indifference, our enemies hundreds of new ways of reminding us of our impotence. I suppose we who enjoy the good life don’t want to lose any of it for anything — and will understandably do any amount of appeasing, explaining, and contextualizing to avoid an existential war against the beheaders and mutilators, a fact well-known to our enemies.

The Europeans are shrugging that Ukraine is lost and will soon sigh that the Baltic states are a far-off place not worth risking the coffee shops of Amsterdam to defend. Westerners lament beheadings but then privately mutter that journalists know just what they are getting into when they visit the Middle East. Murdering and abusing a U.S. ambassador on video is not such a big deal anymore and is worth only a second or so mention on Google News.

So we wait behind our suburban Maginot Lines, arguing over our quarter- and half-measure responses, refighting Iraq and Afghanistan as if they were the Somme and Verdun, assured that we can distract ourselves from the horrors abroad with psychodramas about Ferguson, the president’s golfing, his lectures on fairness, and which naked celebrity photo was hacked on the Internet.

Meanwhile the orcs are busy and growing and nearing the ramparts…

‘A must read': Federal grand jury reportedly targeting terrorist pipeline in US

◼ link - Twitchy

According to the report by the Star Tribune, the investigation is into a group of Somali-Americans who allegedly conspired to join terrorists in Syria:

The proceedings, which have been going on all summer, appear to be centered on trying to find out who is behind efforts to convince 20 to 30 people that they should leave Minnesota to fight in the Middle East. That question has stymied federal agents for the last year as they have struggled to build inroads and trust with the Muslim community in the Twin Cities in order to cut off a new pipeline of recrui
