The program of the Greater Eureka Chamber of Commerce's annual membership meeting gave
special recognition to Lynda Pozel and Jack Hopkins by choosing Hopkins Fine Portraiture as the Eureka Chamber's 2009 Small Business of the Year. This company has recently further distinguished
itself with its extensive volunteer work in the creation of the Humboldt Republican Women's
cookbook. Much of the book's favorable reception has been credited to the talented efforts of
Lynda and Jack.

‘SOCKS FOR SOLDIERS New Project for HRWF

For seven years, this organization has collected specific items troops need and request , plus the military issue “SOCKS”. They accept cash donations to buy items and shipped over 4,000 boxes to soldiers in the last year alone, an impressive feat indeed. Please begin collecting these items and bring them to our August meeting for donation to “Socks for Soldiers” in caring for our troops. They will send thousands of each item. Details will follow but, for now, let‟s help launch Year Eight with items as listed:
*Toothpaste -all sizes; toothbrushes - single wrap; soap bars - full size; & Chapstick.

President’s Message - March 2010

If you have checked our calendar in this issue of our newsletter, you have seen that we are in the happy role of being scheduled well ahead in some areas of our plans for this club year and this election year. Currently, several members of HRWF have collected papers at the Humboldt County Elections Office for the purpose of soliciting signatures to support candidacy for the board of Central Committee. Members are needed so business may be conducted. Attendance and support by community members are also in the best interests of the board and local citizens. Meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at 311 Fifth St. in Eureka.

Our gala Republican of the Year celebration will be Saturday, April 10, at
the Ingomar Club. Watch for more information on this event.

Our Membership Tea has been scheduled for April 13 at Jerrie Bartley‟s lovely home at 2525 O St., Eureka. If you aren‟t current with your membership, there‟s an insert/envelope combo in this newsletter to make it easy to have that small chore off your list. The tea will be our April meeting.

We are counting on a great turnout for Dr. William Wagner at this month/s general meeting. Debbie Walker has heard him speak and made a strong effort to get him here so we can all benefit from his extensive background in the Middle East. We are hoping for strong representation of our local military, so don‟t forget to invite your service person, be they current or retired.

Please do remember your food donations for the second half of our winter food drive. These are difficult times for many of our Humboldt families.

Touch base with me if you want more information about out-of-our-area events. Think about Advocacy Days if there‟s a young person you would like to take to Sacramento to visit legislators.

Our Republican Picnic is nailed down for Sunday, August 29, at that great facility in Rohner Park in Fortuna. We will be trying for candidates to be in attendance to give members, their families and guests the opportunity to look over the field, as well as to socialize with old friends and make some new ones. If you want to lend a helping hand on this project, please give me a call at 268-0101.

Currently we are working on several new projects for HRWF. Preliminary organization is in process for Care Home Visitation Program, Community Beautification, and the Establishment of a Scholarship Program. We are looking for helpers on the first two and there will be fundraising efforts along the way that will welcome your interest and help. HRWF has proven it is a most
capable organization and you have reason to be proud of each member‟s contribution. Thank you for all you do

I talked to Lawrence Weisner today about the local state senate race in which he is running against Democrat Noreen Evans who currently serves in the 7th Assembly district. She is the chair of the Assembly Budget Committee and we all know what a disaster that is. The current state senator, the troubled Pat Wiggins, has been asked to step down by the Press Democrat, as well as other news outlets.

Decline-to-state candidate Ryan Sundberg has entered the 5th Supervisor's race against Democrats Pat Cleary and Pat Higgins.

As of now, Karen Brooks has challenged incumbent Wes Chesbro while Mike Thompson remains unopposed. BY JOY FINLEY

◼ Campaigns and elections topic for HRWF panel

Vee Sorenson, Rose {Welsh} and Dennis Hunter will be panel members for the Humboldt Republican Women Federated's (HRWF) program on campaigns and elections on Thursday. This topic at the club's general meeting at the Elks Lodge, 445 Herrick Ave., in Eureka is prompted by 2010's role as an election year.

The panelists bring strong backgrounds to their topics because of extensive participation in Humboldt County's political scene and longtime community involvement in varied areas. A question and answer session will follow the panel's presentation.

HRWF members are asked to sign up for the organization's staffing of the Republican Office at 311 Fifth St. in Eureka.

HRWF members are encouraged to bring guests, and interested community persons will be welcome. The buffet line opens at 11:30 a.m. Lunch cost is $14.50, and speaker only or speaker/beverage cost is $4. Reservations are needed, and cancellations are a necessity.

Members are asked to bring donations for Food for People food bank in Eureka.

Finley named republican of the year

◼ The Republican Party of Humboldt County will hold its annual Republican of the Year Dinner Tuesday, where Joy Finley will receive the prestigious honor. - Times-Standard

The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The annual event is held to honor those who show exemplary service and contributions to the Republican Party.

The 2009 honoree, Finley, is a Ferndale High School alumna and has long been involved in republican politics in Humboldt County, most recently serving as president of the Eureka Republican Women.

Finely has been a long-time member of the Republican Central Committee and has served in various capacities on the executive board, including as chairwoman.

”Joy Finley is a dedicated volunteer and public servant; she is most deserving of this honor,” said Humboldt GOP Chairwoman Patricia Welch in a press release. “She loves the Republican Party, and continues to work tirelessly on behalf of the party and its candidates.”

The evening will also posthumously honor former 2nd District Supervisor Roger Rodoni, former Fortuna Mayor John Campbell and long-time republican supporter Rogan Coombs, all of whom will be entered into the Humboldt County Republican Party Hall of Fame.

Ron Nehring, chairman of the California Republican Party, will be the evening's guest speaker, and will give an update on state and national politics.
