Where does the GOP’s message fit in here? It doesn’t. It comes through in the real world when college grads have a job to work, taxes to pay, etc. – in other words, when fiscal policy becomes more relevant and in-your-face than ever. We lose the youth vote because we focus too much on politics, which flies over their heads, stresses them out, or bores them.

Conservative blogger Bill Whittle compared this fight to the Korean War, when General MacArthur and his troops were essentially backed into a corner, outnumbered and ill-equipped. To win such a battle, we must get to places we’re not expected to be and show people things they’ve never seen before. Without getting into details on Whittle’s specific plan for doing this (and yes, he definitely has one), it involves creating parallel structures that show how much better private citizens are at getting things done than the government will ever be. We can do it faster, better, and cheaper without any of the government’s help. Show people what actually works in the real world through tangible results. Purify the conservative message and let the youth see that there is more to politics than gay marriage, abortion, free birth control, or whatever the cause du jour on campus may be at a given time. When those hot topics are swept aside, Left versus Right essentially becomes big versus small government, and the latter must become the hero of the story. Republicans have the ability to make individualism, self-reliance, and liberty, rather than identity politics, cool again, and they should try everything in their power to do so in hopes of ever capturing the youth vote.

Humboldt Young Republicans Chapter Forming

College Republicans Launch GOTV Program

◼ The College Republican National Committee on Monday is set to launch “Operation Red November,” a $2 million voter turnout program focused on the presidential contest as well as gubernatorial and Congressional races. - David M. Drucker/Roll Call

The effort calls for dispatching 63 paid, full-time field staff to 25 states to boost support among younger voters for Republicans running in 111 targeted races. The plan, overseen by a national field director and four regional field directors, has set a goal of 6 million live voter contacts in 15 presidential battlegrounds, 16 Senate races, 73 House races and seven gubernatorial contests.

“The CRNC’s quarter million members provide the boots on the ground for the Republican Party. We will utilize our existing membership and our trained field staff to mobilize a youth effort that has never been seen before in our organization’s history,” CRNC Chairman Alex Schriver said in statement included on the press release outlining the group’s effort.

“We’ve specifically chosen battleground states where winning the youth vote will make or break this election,” he added.

College, Young Republicans praise Romney for selection of young running mate

◼ The College Republican National Committee (CRNC) and the Young Republican National Federation (YRNF) both expressed approval of Romney’s decision to pick a the relatively young House Budget Committee Chairman to serve as his Vice President should be he be elected President in November. - Conservative Read

“Congressman Paul Ryan is one of the bravest and boldest figures in the Republican Party,” said CRNC Chairman Alex Schriver in a press release just after the announcement. ”College Republicans around the country are excited about Governor Romney’s selection of a young, energetic running mate. He has a stake in our future the way you and I do.”

Lisa Stickan, Chair of the Young Republicans, a national organization for Republicans under the age of 40, called Ryan a “proven reformer and leader who has courageously offered concrete proposals to turn our economy around” in a press release issued after Romney and Ryan’s first appearance together as running mates this morning in Norfolk, Va.

At the rally Ryan said that it was he and Romney’s ”duty to save the American Dream for our children and [other Americans]. He also noted that the country is ”running out of time, and we can’t afford four more years of this.”

Young in G.O.P. Erase the Lines on Social Issues

◼ In a break from generations past and with an eye toward the future, many of the youngest leaders of the Republican Party are embracing views on some social issues that are at odds with traditional conservative ideology — if they mention such issues at all, according to interviews, experts and some polling - New York Times

“I would prefer that Mitt Romney leave social issues sort of alone, because I do disagree with him on those things,” said Ms. Kotzambasis, whose group, like many others, operates mostly independent of any national party oversight. “He keeps saying that the first things he’ll tackle are health care and the economy, and I hope he tackles the economy. I’m graduating in a couple years, and it’s pretty dismal where I am.”

What has become the norm, some experts say, is for young Republicans to take a cafeteria-style approach to issues that are important to them. And some established leaders see that as a boon to their party.

“My theory is that, just as young people don’t have to buy a whole album on iTunes and can pick and choose just the songs they like, they can customize their political views — and they do,” said Kristen Soltis, a Republican pollster who is the communications adviser to Crossroads Generation, a new pro-Romney “super PAC” aimed at young voters.

YRNF and CRNC Join “Crossroads Generation”

With young people facing high unemployment, a grim job market and record high student loan debt, the youth vote is up for grabs.

"The college students who voted for President Obama four years ago are now recent graduates who are 53% un- or under-employed. These young professionals are desperate for economic policy that can deliver a pro-business, pro-job environment that can help them establish themselves as they look to build careers and families," said Lisa Stickan, Chairman of the Young Republican National Federation.

The College Republican National Committee and the Young Republican National Federation are the nation's oldest, largest, and most active youth political organizations. The CRNC is an 527 group and boasts more than 250,000 members on over 1,800 campuses. The YRNF is also a 527 with over 100,000 young professional members.
