A Republican Wrote The 19th Amendment
Giving Women The Right To Vote
In 1878, U.S. Senator Aaron Sargent (R-CA) introduced in Congress the proposed 19th Amendment according women the right to vote. Over the next four decades, it was primarily the Democrats who would oppose the measure.

Not until 1919, after the Republican Party won majorities in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, did Congress approve what became the 19th Amendment.

We’re very proud of our history.
The story of Republican women's clubs begins many years before women even had the right to vote.

Hundreds of independent Republican women’s clubs grew up around the nation in the late 1800s. In 1938, the Republican National Committee helped to organize these clubs into a national organization. Eleven states became the charter states of NFRW - California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Our local club was one of those first clubs. We've been here since 1938.

Today, the NFRW consists of thousands of active members in local clubs across the nation and in several U.S. territories.

We are proud to be part of the California Federation of Republican Women (CFRW), and the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW), the largest women’s political volunteer organization in the nation.

When you join Humboldt Republican Women, Federated, you're joining forces with women throughout the state and across the nation, women who share your ideals and your goals for our country.

We take an active role in local, state and federal politics.
We work in cooperation with the Republican State and County Central Committees and the National and California Federation of Republican Women to support Republican candidates and promote Republican positions, like smaller government, fiscal responsibility, balanced budgets, and stopping out of control spending and ballooning debt.

We are involved, we stay informed and we work to promote a wider knowledge of the principles and policies of the Republican Party. We join together to make sure our voices are heard when it comes to legislation that affects our lives, our communities and our nation.

We take an active role when it comes to issues and legislation, and we work to educate and inform our members and our communities. We help elect Republican candidates and support Republican ideals. We believe that when we work together, Women In Numbers WIN.

As a member of Humboldt Republican Women Federated you’re also a part of the California Federation of Republican Women (CFRW), and the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW), the largest women’s political volunteer organization in the nation.

The National Federation of Republican Women is a national grassroots political organization with about 1,800 local clubs in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands. With 100,000 members, the NFRW is one of the largest women's political organizations in the country. You become a member by joining your local club or through a National Associate membership. Members of a local club also are granted membership in their state Federation.

With your membership, you’ll receive our club's monthly newsletter, The Redwood Alert; as well as the NFRW's Republican Woman magazine; CRWF's Canvassing the Capital, (a legislative newsletter); as well as Action Alerts (CFRW's statewide hotline network); Leadership Training and voter education.

Check in with us: In the spring: You can test the waters at our Annual Membership SPRING TEA, a scrumptious fun-filled event specially to welcome new and prospective members.

You’ll see us at the Rhododendron Parade, and we team up with the Humboldt Republican Central Committee at many Humboldt County events, manning booths at the Redwood Acres Fair, Old Town 4th of July Fair, and the Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale. Stop by and say “Hi!”

We also join the Humboldt Republican Central Committee for the Republican-Of-The-Year Dinner and the Annual GOP Picnic... watch for details on our website and on Facebook.

Throughout the year, we attend CFRW-Northern Division and CFRW conferences and training seminars.

We’re active in the community: We support our troops with Socks For Soldiers, the Overseas Coupon Project, and more.

We donate books to local schools and libraries in keeping with the Mamie Eisenhower Library Project, NFRW’s oldest literacy program.

And Member families are eligible for our own NEW $500 Scholarship, in addition to those offered by CFRW and NFRW. Your membership dues and donations make it all possible.

We work to:

We earned the Diamond Award (the highest award a club such as ours can earn.) In 2009, we added a half dozen more awards in (CRWF) Northern Division competitions. Among the awards at the conference were first place for community outreach and first place for membership increase.

This CRP Convention is the only major GOP event this important election year.
There will be a lot going on, including our CFRW Spring BOD/Advocacy/Caucus Meeting during the CRP Convention on Friday - which will continue to Sunday Morning.

CFRW members do not need to be delegates to attend this exciting CRP Convention where so much will be going on.

HRWF Scholarship Application

Humboldt Republican Women Federated (HRWF) offers a $500.00 scholarship, to be awarded to a deserving high school graduate. The scholarship includes an additional $500.00 to be awarded upon completion of their Freshman year provided the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA during that year.

Scholarship Application for Humboldt Republican Women Federated's $500 Scholarship.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. A high school grade point average of 3.5 or more.
2. A relationship to a member of Humboldt Republican Women Federated (Preference given to Humboldt County residents)
3. A commitment to further your education at a junior college, four year college/university or trade school
4. Two letters of recommendation: one from a teacher or counselor and one from a community member.
5. Completion of the application form.
6. Year two: When reapplying for the second half of the scholarship, include your freshman year's college transcripts (GPA) and proof of re-enrollment to HRWF by June 30 of that current year.

The application must be received by May 1st.

HRWF dues and donations support the scholarship programs.

The 2017 Nominating Committee for the California Federation of Republican Women is seeking candidates for all offices of CFRW

Please refer to CFRW Bylaws, specifically those cited below for eligibility of candidates:

Article VII—Officers and Duties, Section 1: The elected officers shall be President, three (3) Vice Presidents (one each from Northern, Central, and Southern Divisions), Recording Secretary, Membership Secretary, and Treasurer.
Article VII—Officers and Duties, Section 3: the President’s term of office shall be for one term of two years and is limited to one term only. Local Republicans on Thursday expressed happiness with the results of this week’s historic election and said they looked forward to closing the rift between the political right and left so America can move forward as a nation.

“This is what we’ve got and we really have to come together because we have a lot of big issues facing this country,” College of the Redwoods political science teacher and Humboldt County Trump campaign chair John Schutt said.

This election was historic because this is the first time a president has been elected with no elected office experience nor military experience, he said.

“I think it’s just disgusting,” Humboldt Republican Women membership chair Terry Roberts said about mass protests seen in cities across the U.S. in the days following the election. “If I was a Democrat, I’d be so embarrassed.”

Humboldt Republican Women President Annette De Modena said she would like to see both sides of the political spectrum work together to make the country work.

“I’m sick and tired of this division ... . We are Americans,” she said....

Our speaker today is Captain Steve Watson from the Eureka Police Department

Steve is a Humboldt County native, born and raised in Fortuna. He joined the Army at 18 and left home to "see the world." The Army sent him to Kansas. After an honorable discharge from active duty, Steve attended college while also serving as a military police sergeant in the Army Reserves. He graduated from Bethany University in 1996 with a B.A. in Church Leadership and completed the 5th Year teacher education certification program. He holds a current California teaching credential. While in school, Steve participated in outreach programs to several countries including Romania, India, Guatemala, and Mexico where he worked with underprivileged children and orphans.

Steve joined the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office in 1997 where he served as a Deputy Sheriff for 7 years. His assignments there included Patrol Deputy, Patrol Sergeant, SWAT team, School Resource Officer, Field Training Officer, Coast Patrol, firearms instructor, Court Security Bailiff. In 2005, Steve and his wife of 16 years, Sarah, moved their young family back home to Humboldt after he accepted a position with the Eureka Police Department. Steve has had the privilege of serving his community with EPD for the past 10 1/2 years. He was promoted to sergeant in 2007 and to Captain in November 2014. He established and headed EPD's Problem Oriented Policing Unit from Jan. 2010 - January 2013. Steve is a 2013 graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute.

Steve and Sarah are the proud parents of 5 energetic children and two spirited terriers. There is never a dull (or quiet) moment in the Watson household.

Meet US Senate Candidate Tom Del Beccaro TODAY in Eureka

◼ Thomas G. Del Beccaro: My view on the Dem debate - in this Divided Era:
1. Webb is the most conservative Dem, but not user friendly. He makes good points but not with that crowd. No room for him in his dogmatic party. No big gains for him of tonight.

2. Lincoln Chafee - well, yawn.

3. Martin O'Malley. I was surprised his voice sounded so shaky. Not as commanding as he needed to be to make it a 3 way race. Running for President is about big money and he didn't make the case he should be ahead of the rest.

4. Bernie. He handled himself well. No major gaffes. He said what he believes. His views are as Left as it comes - and that is the way his fans like it and - and a good percentage of the nation does too. Look for him to raise big money off the debate but not rise in the polls.

5. Hillary. No tough questions for her - or at least she was not required to answer them. For instance, devil may care about those emails - especially if she isn't forced to answer a tough question about them. She needed not to blow it and not come off like a victim. Well, she came off as a fighter and didn't blow it. This debate helps her because she didn't look like a candidate overwhelmed. Her campaign stabilized tonight. The hearings and the FBI will have a greater say. Comment that may haunt her? Saying that Snowden broken the law and must pay for it. Hmmmm.

6. First political lesson my Father taught me when I was but 8 - way back in 1969. "Democrats have it made. They have convinced people they can vote themselves rich." I will never forget his words. Tonight, the Democrats worked hard to make that case - from immigrants (legal and otherwise) to college students. In that sense, the Democrats improved their standing because in politics, people are sold free lunches and others silently endure paying for them.

A sought-after speaker, he brings a unique - and often calming - perspective to the topic of the Middle East and Iraq. Around 2003 he began translating and disseminating articles from Iraq into English, to give us a better understanding of what it was like over there. Some of his pieces were featured in the now-defunct Eureka Reporter.

In a 2005 North Coast Journal article he said, "I compared that to what my dad was reading over there -- he went over in January or February of '04. I started asking him what the papers looked like over there, and they were identical. So I said, O.K. -- if I look at the PDF files of these newspapers, that's exactly what the Iraqis are reading. So I started translating those articles."

He was born in Baghdad, Iraq, to an Iraqi father and German Mother. His primary education was in Iraq and Germany and he finished high school and his first year of college in England.

Haider came to HSU to study Environmental Engineering in 1983. He married Claire in 1985 and they have 3 sons: Nyle, 29, Zaid, 27, Hadi, 25, and a daughter Alia, 18.

Prior to starting as a financial consultant with Smith Barney in 1992, Haider's occupation was exporting fresh produce to Europe. In 2009, he and his business partner, Mark Morgan, moved to Wells Fargo Advisors and formed Ajina & Morgan Financial Group, where he is now Vice President of Investments.

Haider is a Rotarian and Past President of The Rotary Club of Southwest Eureka, Past President of the Trinidad Chamber of Commerce, 10-Year Director of the Trinidad-to-Clam-Beach Run & Walk, co-founder and 7-year Director of the Tour of Trinidad (Bike Tour), co-founder and volunteer at The Humboldt Bay Paddlefest, and 5-Year Treasurer of the Humboldt State Alumni Association. He served on the boards of The Greater Trinidad Chamber of Commerce, Humboldt State Alumni Association, Rotary Club of SW Eureka, Eureka Big Brothers Big Sisters, as Treasurer for Humboldt Youth Soccer, and as Treasurer for Rotary District 5130 Youth Exchange.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS!

It’s in the air! Can you feel it? CHANGE! REAL HOPE FOR A NEW TOMORROW! During the first week of the Humboldt County Fair we registered over 20 Republicans! Last year at the fair, we were lucky if we registered anyone; and did we have fun! The Republican booth was a hive of activity. We conducted our Bean Poll of the Presidential candidates, gave balloons to children, registered Republicans, recruited for California Young Republicans, sold cook books, and visited with friendly, upbeat people who want the right change for America. A huge thank you to those who helped with any aspect of our time at the fair. We can’t do anything without our volunteers; and HRWF women are the best!

The first Saturday in August was the GOP Picnic at the Moose Lodge where Sheriff Mike Downey was our guest speaker. How blessed we are to have had him serve this County as our sheriff. He’s just the best. A great time was had by all. Gary Frank was once again our barbeque chef extraordinaire and Jim Pell graciously gave of his time and energy by donating and operating his sound system for us. Not only do I give special thanks to these three men, but I also once again want to give thanks to all the federated women who participated in the planning, organization, and clean-up, as well as for their donations to the silent auction. Proceeds benefit both HRWF and the HGOP Central Committee. My heartfelt gratitude to all you who attended this traditional event.

The November General Election is just around the corner and we have once again many of us will help support those candidates who support bringing true hope and change to our county. (There are three seats on the five-member Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District (aka Harbor District) Board of Commissioners alone).* Do you have a greater vision, a greater hope, for Eureka? For Humboldt County? It takes time, sacrifice, and unity of purpose. The more who help, the less work for each one of us. Catch the fire! Dream! Unite! Work! Volunteer! Win! I will have sign up sheets available at the meeting.

This month at our HRWF meeting, we will be celebrating Citizenship Day September 17, at the Elks Lodge as usual. We will hear family stories from HRWF women whose families emigrated to the United States as an introduction to Haider Ajina sharing his experiences in his quest for freedom.

* Remember: There are more than 200 open seats up for grabs Nov. 3 on the boards of schools and special districts throughout Humboldt County. As reported by Jack Durham/Mad River Union, there are several races in which the seats held by board majorities are open, meaning that power structures could shift in communities if residents so desire – assuming there are enough candidates willing to run.

For example, there are three open seats on the five-member Manila Community Services District Board of Directors. There are also three seats – a board majority – open on the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District. Featured Speaker for February: Eureka Police Chief Andy Mills

Andrew (Andy) Mills is currently the Chief of Police for the City of Eureka, California, a city of 30,000 residents, which is situated in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Eureka is surrounded by gigantic redwood trees, a mesmerizing ocean and some of the best outdoor adventures in California. It is also home to urban problems in a rural community.

Formerly, Andy Mills was a San Diego Police captain assigned to Eastern and Western Divisions. Each of the commands had populations of 150,000 residents and about 200 employees. Prior to that, he served as the commanding officer of Criminal Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism, two tours in the Gang Unit where he implemented Intelligence-Led Policing, created an in-house intelligence database, and served on the executive committee for the CalGang Database. Recently, Mills helped create and implement the Major City Chief’s Criminal Intelligence Enterprise which has been adopted by the Major City Chiefs.

Mills belongs to the Homeland Security Policy Institute, of the Intelligence Task Force at George Washington University. Mills was the 2000 recipient of the Police Executive Research Forum’s national Gary P. Hayes award for his contributions to improving the quality of police service. Andy managed one patrol team that won the Herman Goldstein Award for Excellence in Problem-Oriented Policing and three others that were Goldstein finalists. His work in the field has been included in several publications produced by PERF and the COPS Office. Mills has published articles on the National Criminal Intelligence Enterprise (NCIE), police leadership, problem solving and police ethics in Problem Solving Quarterly, Law Enforcement News and several National Institute of Justice publications. He frequently lectures at conferences and has provided training to scores of police agencies, including Washington, D.C., Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Rio de Janeiro. He has also taught for the University of Delaware police leadership program.
