EPA’s epic Gold King mine blunder on video, complete with a WTF moment

RATINGS GO BOOM...

"I have raised a sweet, thoughtful, environmentally conscious monster—and soon I will be free."

My son, Cory, will leave our Northern California home to start college back East in the fall, prompting other mothers to offer condolences about my soon-to-be-empty nest. Though they expect me to break into tears, my overriding emotion when my youngest departs will be relief. I will finally be freed from the constant scrutiny of the ever-vigilant eco-warrior I raised.

I can do nothing right in my teenage son’s eyes. He grills me about the distance traveled of each piece of fruit and every vegetable I purchase. He interrogates me about the provenance of all the meat, poultry, and fish I serve. He questions my every move—from how I choose a car (why not electric?) and a couch (why synthetic fill?) to how I tend the garden (why waste water on flowers?)—an unremitting interrogation of my impact on our desecrated environment. While other parents hide alcohol and pharmaceuticals from their teens, I hide plastic containers and paper towels....

It’s no surprise Cory feels the weight of the planet’s future on his shoulders. He answered the call from Raffi, the Lorax, and his grandmother. Now he is calling on me and my generation—Baby Boomers who thought we could fix the mess we helped create by doing little more than buying a Prius‚ to seriously examine the way we live....

The fact that our Secretary of State endangered national security by offering an open door to hostile intelligence services and sophisticated terrorist hackers is outrageous.

Ted Cruz: Gov. Rick Perry is a friend and a remarkable public servant. He is a proud veteran who bravely served our nation, and he was an extraordinary governor of Texas. As Texas Solicitor General, it was an honor to serve under him.
Because of his principled leadership as the longest-serving governor in the state’s history, Texas has become a haven for freedom, entrepreneurship, and limitless opportunity. The entire Republican field was unquestionably made stronger by the experience and wisdom he brought to the race.
In honor of his passion for our veterans, Heidi and I have today made a personal contribution to both the Lone Survivor Foundation and the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation, in honor of Rick and Anita Perry, and we encourage everyone else to do the same.”
We wish Governor Perry, Anita, Griffin, and Sydney the very best in what is certain to be decades of continued service to our Nation.

"A memorial service for Peter Hannaford is scheduled for Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church. Hannaford is survived by his wife Irene, two sons Richard and Donald, and two grandchildren Thomas and Patricia.

“I would just love to see a virtually full church. His friendships in business and the church, you name it, are widespread and it’s not just in Eureka, which is a wonderful thing,” Irene Hannaford said."

Remembering Peter Hannaford

Peter Hannaford, 1932 – 2015 - Eureka Books

(W)orking with Peter and his publisher, the University of Nebraska Press, we were able to host a book-launch for Arts Alive (September 5, 2015).... We had a good turn out and Peter spent the evening talking with friends and well-wishers, and selling copies of his books. We are all shocked and saddened by his passing, but glad he was able to spend his last night doing what he loved, being an author with a new book. Peter was one of those naturally charismatic people who was liked by everyone who met him. He had led a very interesting life and was an endless source of stories, but even with his 83rd birthday just weeks away, he was still thinking about what was next. His was a full life, lived fully, and there is a lot to admire in that....

"This may be the most surprising of President Obama's foreign-policy legacies: not just that he presided over a humanitarian and cultural disaster of epochal proportions, but that he soothed the American people into feeling no responsibility for the tragedy"

...Hiatt's chief claim is this: that the Obama administration has dealt so fecklessly with world crises, passing off its incompetence as some sort of mature "realist" worldview, that the average American has become infected with the idea that things like genocide and famine are not issue that should concern the United States....

In Colombia, the worst fears of the surveillance state are on display

A handful of companies based in Italy, Israel, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and the U.S. have sold surveillance technology to authorities in Colombia, according to research published this month by the UK-based Privacy International. The technology enables Colombian law enforcement and intelligence agencies to engage in surveillance activities similar to those conducted by the National Security Agency in the U.S.

The technology allows Colombian police to do things such as hack electronic devices unbeknownst to users, install offensive malware that allow for remote access and control, and harvest telephone data en masse. Like the U.S., Colombian law doesn't necessarily allow for such surveillance to take place. "This type of mass, automated surveillance is not explicitly authorized under Colombian law," the researchers note....

The government's disregard for the law doesn't end with respect to surveillance, the researchers note. "Accounts of the illegal interception of private communications pervade accounts of extrajudicial disappearances and killings," they state.

Then there is President Obama's relentless anti-police rhetoric, a toxic blend of anti-white racism and Marxist cop-hatred. It is as if Obama pal Bill Ayers, the unrepentant terrorist and Black Power supporter who helped to launch Obama's political career, were running the White House communications office.

Meanwhile, much of the anger in the streets that has turned into rioting and looting sprees has been underwritten by radical anti-American financier George Soros to advance the goals of the Black Lives Matter movement. Much of the rest of it has been inspired by the community organizer in the White House and his minion, the former Attorney General Eric Holder. The mainstream media has been playing a supporting role, turning every police shooting of a person of color into a cause célèbre, regardless of the circumstances leading to the shooting.

And as each day goes by the rhetoric from the black-nationalist Left grows more chilling, unchallenged by the Obama administration and the mainstream media....

Black-supremacist King Noble announced in a YouTube video that it's time to start to murdering Americans, Breitbart News reports.
"It's open season on killing white people and cops. It's unavoidable, unescapable.

It's funny that now we're moving to a time where the predator will become the prey."
Noble continued:
Today we live in a time where the white man will be picked off and there's nothing he can do about it. His day is up. His time is up. We will witness more executions and killing of white people and cops than we ever have before. We see with the Houston, Texas shooting and we see with the news reporting shooting in Virginia, it's about to go down. It's open season on killing white people and crackers. The Black Lives Matter movement wasn't enough.
He added:
It's not safe no more to be white in America. Lurking behind any corner could be an angry black man ready to take yo ass out. It's a reality. It's open season on killing whites and police and they better make some serious, serious changes, social changes, at this point, but it ain't looking good.
At time of writing, the viral video posted Aug. 30 had been viewed more than 444,000 times.

Normally this kind of extremist rhetoric would be ignored or laughed at, but we do not live in normal times.

President Obama doesn't condemn any of it, which is reason for all Americans to worry.

Can Carly Fiorina win the CNN debate?

Today is Carly Fiorina's birthday. She received an early birthday gift this week when she found out it is likely she will be on CNN's debate stage. With Hillary Clinton continuing to be dogged by an e-mail scandal, can Fiorina appeal to Clinton's supporters?

If Carly Fiorina keeps polling well, she'll be invited by CNN to participate in the second GOP presidential debate, on September 16. As we learned last week, CNN changed the rules of its first debate to include any candidate who polls in the top 10 between August 7 and September 10. Fiorina's campaign fought hard for the rules change after her surprisingly excellent performance in FOX's "undercard" GOP debate for lower-polling candidates, which aired August 6.

Barring a seismic shift in the polls in the next few days, Fiorina, who is polling seventh and who has never held elected office, will be the only "undercard" candidate to graduate to the main stage, leaving behind a group of current and former U.S. senators and governors with more than 130 years of political experience between them.

We’ve come to a place where people realize running for political office all your life isn’t the most qualifying set of experiences. We have a professional political class that is unwilling or unable to challenge the status quo or get anything done.

Since the end of the Cold War, the U.S.—and the West as a whole—has lost the diplomatic touch. These countries began to negotiate for symbolism, not substance. From the Kyoto Protocol to the U.N.’s human rights agreements, negotiation became about looking good, not doing good.

Like unhappy families, bad agreements are each bad in their own way. And of course there are degrees of badness: no trade deal, no matter how implausibly dreadful, could be worse than a nuclear deal gone wrong. But bad agreements do have a few features in common.

The major postwar agreements—from the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade to the North Atlantic Treaty that created NATO—stood the test of time because they were good deals that met real needs. They were serious, clear, and substantial, and they benefited everyone....

It might be that all of this is just a case of bad diplomacy producing bad agreements, of which there have been many since 1989. But note the final thing that these agreements have in common: they will tie the hands of the U.S. (and the U.K.) long after Obama has left office.
