False Consensus: The Onion Spoofs Climate Science

Huge day for the the right. We won on travel ban, pro-life free speech and beat back the bogus climate change lawsuits against oil companies.

Disaster has arrived for climate alarmists. Arctic sea ice volume is above normal, highest in thirteen years, and melting at the slowest rate on record.

Even if the pledges were met the deal would be useless

A common argument against the Paris agreement has been that the “pledges” to cut emissions are only that: promises, targets, hopes. There is no way to enforce them, or even to verify them in many cases.

Another common argument, highlighted in Trump’s speech but made since long before, is that even if the pledges were met the deal would be useless. According to this view, China, India et al are not even putting up with the charade of trying to reduce emissions. Their emission targets are what you’d expect if their economies and energy systems continued their historical experience; in other words, their “target” is equivalent to doing nothing. Most hilariously, Pakistan’s INDC simply stated its emissions would peak at some point.

(Proponents of the agreement have usually countered this argument by putting their hands on their ears and ceaselessly screaming “I HEAR NOTHING”)...

Scientists discover 91 volcanoes below Antarctic ice sheet

This is in addition to 47 already known about... Scientists have uncovered the largest volcanic region on Earth – two kilometres below the surface of the vast ice sheet that covers west Antarctica.

The project, by Edinburgh University researchers, has revealed almost 100 volcanoes – with the highest as tall as the Eiger, which stands at almost 4,000 metres in Switzerland.

Geologists say this huge region is likely to dwarf that of east Africa’s volcanic ridge, currently rated the densest concentration of volcanoes in the world.

And the activity of this range could have worrying consequences, they have warned. “If one of these volcanoes were to erupt it could further destabilise west Antarctica’s ice sheets,” said glacier expert Robert Bingham, one of the paper’s authors. “Anything that causes the melting of ice – which an eruption certainly would – is likely to speed up the flow of ice into the sea.

“The big question is: how active are these volcanoes? That is something we need to determine as quickly as possible.”

Another benefit of warming – California projected to get wetter through this century

In other words, “it could be caused by Al Gore’s patented doomsday shtick that’s been around for a couple decades, or something that’s been happening since the Earth formed — you be the judge.”

It’s actually a jarring reminder that Gore’s an agenda-driven, greedy science hack. The same article Gore cites as more evidence of what’s being caused by global warming debunks Al’s “settled science”:
There is no scientific consensus over whether global warming is to blame.
[…]
“While it might not be caused by global warming, it’s at least a natural laboratory to study how breakups will occur at other ice shelves to improve the theoretical basis for our projections of future sea level rise,” said Thomas P. Wagner, who leads NASA’s efforts to study the polar regions.
This is my favorite part:
Some climate scientists believe the warming in the region was at least in part a consequence of human-caused climate change, while others have disputed that, seeing a large role for natural variability — and noting that icebergs have been breaking away from ice shelves for many millions of years.

Exiting the Mad Hatter’s climate tea party

President Trump stands alone on the world stage as the only true global leader willing to call a spade a spade. The Paris Climate Accord was less about saving the planet as it was about transferring wealth and ceding government control from the U.S. to other nations of the world. But beyond that, the Paris Accord was based upon faulty science...

Fact Check: Did the Global Seed Vault Flood Because of Global Warming?

On Friday, May 19, the Guardian and Wired ran stories claiming that melting permafrost had put the Global Seed Vault at risk. Their claims boiled down to the following:

  • Melting permafrost had flooded the facility because of record-warm winter temperatures.
  • Water in the entryway caught facility managers by surprise and endangered the seeds.

But these reports weren't quite right. Popular Science then published a piece explaining that the reported worse-than-ever flooding was actually somewhat routine. According to the article:

  • Water seeps into the entryway every year, according to Cary Fowler who spearheaded the vault's creation.
  • The front of the facility was designed to divert water runoff, and the seed storage is uphill of the tunnel entrance.
One reason the initial story caught on so quickly is that it plays into a key misconception about the Seed Vault: that it was designed and commissioned purely to combat the future effects of global warming.

In fact, the seeds in the Seed Vault preserve 881,473 different types of plants from 233 countries in order to backstop the loss or failure of local seed banks....
