Republican Women Applaud Bold, Brave President's Speech to Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. - "Tonight we saw a bold, brave leader stand before Congress and the world to lay out a carefully planned strategy to address the specific problems that have shaken the American dream and stood in the way of making America great again," said National Federation of Republican Women President Carrie Almond in a statement following President Donald Trump's Address to a Joint Session of Congress tonight.

"'Land of the free and home of the brave,' - words that stir us every time we hear our National Anthem - often refer to soldiers who fought on foreign lands," Almond said. "While our brave soldiers throughout the world continue to fight for our freedom, we are also battling right here at home, in our streets and schools, our places of work and worship, to restore American values and repair the decay caused by the past eight years of division, bitterness and elitist attitudes."

"Tonight President Trump stood before the joint session of Congress like any great commander, fully prepared with a battle plan, unafraid to take on a tough fight," Almond added.

In the first 38 days we have seen President Trump keep more campaign promises than the previous administration accomplished in eight years, she said. "He has done, and is doing, and will continue to do as president, precisely what he said he would do as a candidate for president."

"Our country was founded on the American dream of freedom, equal opportunity and initiative. But it is not free," Almond asserted. "The American dream does not mean that everything from health care to college should be free. It does not mean that free speech equals freedom from manners, decorum, common sense and decency. It does not mean freedom to come into this country illegally. Our president clearly showed tonight his commitment to defending American exceptionalism, preserving the American dream and restoring hope in every citizen."

Ohio Federation Travels to Arlington Cemetery for Wreaths across America

It was a beautiful and meaningful day as 19 members from 10 clubs in the Ohio Federation of Republican Women (and three guests) joined 70,000 volunteers from across America to lay 241,408 wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery on Saturday, December 12. Topping off what Ohio FRW President Lyn Bliss describes as a FANTASTIC weekend were a late lunch at the U.S. Capitol, visits to Union Station and the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Sunday services at the Washington National Cathedral.

Making the Move

Missouri's Carrie Almond (4th from left) is preparing to begin her two-year term as President of the NFRW on January 1. During her tenure, Carrie will live in Alexandria, VA, where the NFRW headquarters is located. The local club (the Commonwealth Republican Women) welcomed her warmly last week when she joined them for their annual holiday party and officer installation.

In Memoriam: Reva Mae Brown Jennings

We are sad to share the news of the death of Reva Jennings on December 12. Reva's long association with the Georgia Federation of Republican Women included a term as President from 1987-88. She began her political activism as a Young Republican and was an active member and founder of the Republican Party in Forsythe County and a former Republican Woman of the Year. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 18. Read more here.

New Faces at the NFRW

The NFRW is excited to welcome Liz Matro to the headquarters staff as Executive Projects Coordinator. A New Jersey native, Liz is a 2013 graduate of Catholic University and comes to the NFRW from IREX (International Research & Exchanges Board). Liz takes over for Anushya Ramaswamy, who recently was promoted to Membership Director.

Also new to the NFRW staff is Linda Kivi-Porter, in charge of Special Projects and Endowments. A member of the Loudoun (VA) Republican Women's Club, Linda has been a familiar face at national board meetings, serving as a sergeant at arms.

I wanted to share with you some helpful information from the Arizona Federation of Republican, our hosts for the NFRW Biennial Convention.

PRE-CONVENTION TOURS

I have also had several inquiries as to attire for the Friday night. Arizona is fairly casual...we're realistic about hot weather. Suggest something comfortable and cool for outside along with a wrap or light sweater if we move inside with air conditioning? Definitely toss a wrap or light sweater in your suitcase...every place is air conditioned.

NFRW Round Table Newsletter December 2014

In this last issue of 2014, we share information about two key projects underway at the NFRW. The first is our updated web site and member database, which is set to launch on January 5. This new system will be integrated and streamlined, making the collection of member data much more efficient and timely.

The second is our initiative to attract young women to the Federation through the National At-Large Membership program and through a series of outreach tools.

We also highlight the Republican women elected to federal and statewide office in November. This is an impressive group of women, and we are so proud of each of them.

We've had a wonderful year and have accomplished much. As we pause to celebrate the holidays, please know how much we appreciate everything you do for the Federation. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

What the NFRW's New Web Site, Database Means For You
Last year, the NFRW began building a new member database and web site. Work on this project has continued throughout 2014, and we are on target to unveil the new database and web site on January 5, 2015.

The objective of the project is to integrate and consoli- date all NFRW data and web sites into a single plat- form, and to streamline and simplify the online user experience for our members, clubs and states.

A Brief History of our Web and Database Systems
Let’s take a quick look at where we’ve been in terms of our e-systems. The NFRW member data- base has existed in electronic format since 1992. From 1992 to 2003, we had an in-house database which we maintained with the files or paper reports sent by each state federation. We developed our first web site in 1996.

In 2004, the NFRW moved its database to a web-based system, which was in use for the next four years. In 2008, a new web-based member database system came online, which allowed states to enter and access their member information, but did not allow for individual- ized reports.

In 2010, the NFRW built an online shopping cart, and created a second web site (RepublicanWomen.net) which features region, state and club web pages.

Current System vs. New System
The addition of all of these online features has led to more back-end databases – five in total – with duplica- tion and overlapping information in use.

With the new system, this burdensome and complicated duplication will be eliminated, and all of our databases and web sites will be integrated, consolidated and stream- lined into a single platform.

Another problem with the current system is that it is never completely up-to-date. It takes a long time for a member’s address or other information to be updated in the system because the data has to pass up the chain from the member to the club to the state and then to national. Completing this task can take months.

With the new system, individual members will be able to access their own record and make changes to their own personal information. In addition, each member will de- termine and manage her own username and password.

The new system will make it easier for state federations to manage their member data. Clubs will be able to directly enter their member records into the new database. This will happen either through downloading the list in Excel, updating it and then uploading the new file, or by adding an individual member directly into the data- base. The club will be able to produce a report directly from the database to send, along with a check, to the state federation.

At the state level, the treasurer/membership officer will still be able to update the club files as she always has done, but now when she receives a check with a report issued from the database, her job will be much easier. All she will need to do is validate the informa- tion prior to sending her own state report to NFRW headquarters.

The new system will be user-friendly and permissions-based, so that:
• An individual member will have access to her own record;
• The club administrator will have access to the records for her entire club; and,
• The state administrator will have access to the records for all the clubs in her state.

Training Will Be Available
To help state and club administrators learn how to use the new system, the NFRW will provide online docu- mentation and tools. The NFRW Technology Commit- tee will also provide training.

January 5 is the official roll-out date for the new database and web site. Each member will receive her username and password either via email (if the mem- ber has a valid email address on file with the NFRW) or through her club president.

You can help residents of Weed, California rebuild part of their community after this summer's devastating wildfire.
People can drop off book donations for the Weed library through this Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside KTVN's main lobby located at 4925 Energy Way in Reno (89502.)

The Sparks Republican Women club is requesting young adult fiction, and children's books. DVDs and audiobooks are also needed.
The National Federation of Republican Women's Literary and Caring for America Committees adopted the town to help residents with the healing process.

◼ The Republican National Committee (RNC) released a new web video, “Women of the GOP,” highlighting some of the Party’s exceptional female candidates this November.

This video is part of the RNC’s “Taking Back The Future” initiative, encouraging more Republican women to get involved in the political process.

CFRW Capitol Update (Friday, August 22, 2014)

President’s Message

It is so important for us to all review our Bylaws and Standing Rules, especially in an election year. Here are a few examples from our CFRW Bylaws and Standing Rules that specifically talk about ethics. You might want to share these with all your club members.

ARTICLE V – ETHICS  Section 1. Candidate Endorsements

4. Where there is more than one Republican candidate for nomination or election in a special election, a top two primary election, or a top two general election, if a local club wishes to vote to endorse one of the Republican candidates, they may do so provided that all other Republican candidates for that position have been given the opportunity to be heard. Such a vote shall require that all regular members receive ten days previous notice, including date, time and place of the meeting, and the vote to endorse the candidate is by ballot. Providing a quorum is present, a three-fourth (3/4) vote of those members present is required to endorse.

Section 4.It shall be considered a breach of ethics for a member to speak disparagingly in public of any Republican candidates. It shall also be considered a breach of ethics to publicly promote a candidate of another party in speech, in print or electronic communication in a partisan or non-partisan election and may be just cause for a member’s suspension or dismissal.

Standing Rules V Endorsements.

1. While each Republican woman may work for the candidate of her choice, the local club and local club President must remain neutral until after the primary election.

Article V. Section 1 (a) However if there is only one Republican candidate at the close of the filing date, the Club President may endorse.

This also applies to State, Division, County Presidents and Regional Directors.

The actions that shall constitute the endorsement of a candidate can be found in the CFRW Bylaws Standing Rules V Endorsements 2.

Policy Section V Electronic Communications

All correspondence initiated or forwarded by a member becomes public record. The member then has ownership and shall be held accountable for all messages affecting the Federation under the guidelines of CFRW Ethics.   (See Bylaws Article V)

Starting in September our clubs will all be gearing up for the busy fall schedule of meetings and sharing important information to help our members elect our candidates in November. It might be helpful to have your club Parliamentarian make a presentation about the bylaws to help your members become more familiar with them at your September or October meeting and/or in your club newsletter. She might especially highlight the articles in the CFRW Bylaws/Standing Rules /and Procedures sections that pertain to elections, endorsements, and ethics.

I know it will be Republican Women who make a difference in November because we care about the future of our Federation, California, and America. We will work as hard as is necessary to ensure that America continues to be the greatest nation the world has even known!

Life or Death

As the end of session nears, some bills live on while others have met their demise. Unfortunately too many “bad bills” are still alive and well, and we have to work hard to stop them! Find you Assembly Member HERE. 

SB 33 (Wolk, D)- Remember this doozey? Well it has come out of hibernation and the Democrats are looking to pass it fast. SB 33 would repeal the voter approval apparatus to create “Infrastructure Financing Districts,” which would have the ability to raise bonds and joint powers agreements. This is a very dangerous bill which takes away voter oversight of government entities. Call your ASSEMBLY MEMBER and ask them to VOTE NO on SB 33!

SB 53 ( DeLeon, D)- This bill has been resurrected last minute! It was all but dead a week ago, but perhaps the Democrats are trying to pass it without the public noticing. We must act fast! SB 53 would mandate that Californians purchase permits before they can purchase ammunition for their guns, which would be kept on file with the Attorney General. This is a clear infringement of our Second Amendment rights and must be stopped! Please call your ASSEMBLY MEMBER and ask them to VOTE NO on SB 53!

SB 1077 (DeSaulnier, D)- Although this bill was amended days ago to change the name of the program from “Mileage Based Fees” to “Road Usage Charges,” the effect of the bill remains intact. Democrats want to squeeze every penny from Californians, so are proposing a pilot program to charge automobile users based on the miles they drive every day. There are so many things wrong with this bill; it is hard to name them all. First, it gives the California Transportation Commission carte blanch in creating and implementing this pilot program. There are serious privacy issues with tracking a citizen’s mileage and car usage. It disproportionately targets those who have to drive further for work or those in rural areas who drive further for necessities. We must stop this bill! Call your ASSEMBLY MEMBER and ask them to VOTE NO on SB 1077!

Capitol Update (Friday, August 15, 2014)

President's Message 

The Dorothy Andrews Kabis Internship offers three young women the opportunity to spend up to six weeks in our nation’s capitol at the NFRW headquarters.  The internship provides housing in the DC Area, and round trip airfare.  Last year CFRW unfortunately did not receive even one application for this incredible opportunity.

 

I would like to give our clubs a challenge when you start getting back to business in September and that challenge is to actively recruit applicants for this NFRW Program. The applicants  must be U.S citizens, undergraduate college students age 21and over, completed high school but not yet graduated from college.  They must have a knowledge  of government, interested in politics , including campaign experience and office clerical skills.

 

The best way to find potential applicants is to  contact a college or universities near you, check if they have a College Republican club,and get to know some of the young women who are members. College Republican woman will definitely have the government and political skills the Dorothy Kabis Internship requires for applicants! Encourage one or a few of the young women to fill out applications,you might be helping them achieve a very special opportunity!       

Getting to know the college Republicans is also a great opportunity for your club to help mentor some of those young Republicans,  invite them to attend your meetings, if some of the young women are interested in joining get them involved with some Federated projects.  Remember these young women are the FUTURE of the Federation. 

  

Applications for the Kabis Internship must be submitted to the State President by January 6, 2015, no later!!  We can send multiple applications from California to NFRW which makes this program even more exciting, we have many more opportunities for a young woman from California to win an internship with NFRW next summer. What an honor it  would be for your club if you applicant won!  More details for the Dorothy Andrews Kabis Internship can be found on the CFRW website .

 

Continuing to increase our membership is always a # one priority.  Increasing our membership allows us to get more involved with many different projects in our communities. Recruiting  and retaining our members helps us build stronger clubs and a stronger Federation. In election years it is even more important that we continue to build our numbers so we can have more boots on the ground to GOTV.  We are still behind in membership numbers from  2013, which is not good for an election year. But I am sure we will increase our numbers over the next few months. I want to congratulate the clubs who have reached 100% of 2013 numbers this month:

Chico,NapaVintage,Nevada County, Solano, Sonoma Valley,Tulelake Basin, Blossom Trail,Inyo County, Kings County,Latinas United, SETCO,Tulare, Capistrano Valley, Chula Vista-Bonita,

Diamond Bar,Fullerton,Intermountain, La Jolla, Lake San Marcos,Lakeside, Point Loma, Rancho La Habra, San Fernando Valley, Santa Monica, South Pasadena, Temecula Valley,

Whittier. We also have 30 clubs who are only 10 members or less from 100% of 2013 numbers and I know you can reach the 100% goal very soon, then on to Victory in November!

Action Alert! 

The end of this legislative session is only two weeks away! That means that our legislators are quickly passing bills from the Appropriations Committees and back to their houses for a floor vote. Now is the time that we need you to call YOUR representative and ask them to vote NO on these bills:

 

AB 1522 (Gonzales, D): Would require all California employers to provide paid sick leave to all their employees. This would drive businesses out of California! Call your SENATOR and ask them to VOTE NO! 

 

SB 1077 (DeSaulnier): Would create a pilot program for taxing Californians based on the number of miles they drive everyday, called "Mileage Based Fees". Since the Democrats aren't getting the tax revenue they thought they would from gas taxes since many Californians drive hybrids, this is their creative solution to reach in to the pockets of hard working Californians and take what they can. Call your ASSEMBLY MEMBER and ask them to VOTE NO on SB 1077!

Celebrate Women’s History Month: First Women Mayors in the United States

◼ Bertha Landes, a Republican, was the first woman to serve as mayor of a large American city. Elected in 1926, Landes campaigned that Seattle needed some "municipal housekeeping." Among her accomplishments were curbing corruption and reducing crime.

Per Wikipedia: In Seattle, Landes was active in women's organizations, including the Women's University Club, the Women's Century Club, and the Women's Auxiliary of University Congregational Church. She was president of the Washington State chapter of the League of Women Voters.

In 1921, as president of the Seattle Federation of Women's Clubs, she orchestrated a weeklong Women's Educational Exhibit for Washington Manufacturers. Staffed by more than 1,000 clubwomen, it bolstered the spirits of the business community during a period of severe recession. That year, Landes was appointed by the city mayor to serve on a commission studying unemployment,[3] the only woman on the five-member commission.

A Republican Wrote The 19th Amendment Giving Women The Right To Vote
In 1878, U.S. Senator Aaron Sargent (R-CA) introduced in Congress the proposed 19th Amendment according women the right to vote. Over the next four decades, it was primarily the Democrats who would oppose the measure.

Not until 1919, after the Republican Party won majorities in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, did Congress approve what became the 19th Amendment.

The story of Republican women's clubs begins many years before women even had the right to vote.

Hundreds of independent Republican women’s clubs grew up around the nation in the late 1800s. In 1938, the Republican National Committee helped to organize these clubs into a national organization. Eleven states became the charter states of NFRW - California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Our local club was one of those first clubs. We've been here since 1938.

Today, the NFRW consists of thousands of active members in local clubs across the nation and in several U.S. territories.

We are proud to be part of the California Federation of Republican Women (CFRW), and the National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW), the largest women’s political volunteer organization in the nation.
