In Douglas County, Colorado, the front line of the fight for school choice and vouchers on the SCOTUS level, Republican voters outnumber Democrats about two to one. Yet until recently, Republican taxpayers in this peaceful suburb south of Denver were unwittingly paying about $1.25 million a year to fund Democrats’ political campaigns.

How so? Most of the district’s 4,300 plus teachers belonged to the local American Federation of Teachers (AFT) union, to which they paid about $1.25 million in dues annually, according to the union’s IRS filings. Since teachers’ salaries are paid by the county’s property tax payers, their dues come out of those salaries. So the $1.25 million annual dues end up in the coffers of the AFT and that money is funneled to the campaigns of Democrats running for office. That’s a lot of Republican-bashing TV campaign commercials and mailers.... especially galling for Douglas County Republicans because 60% of them voted for Donald Trump, even while they were funding Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign through their teachers’ union dues.

Regulators have approved a request by legislative Democrats to eliminate limits on the amount of campaign money they can transfer to Senator Josh Newman, who faces a recall for his deciding vote for the gas tax.

The Club for Growth's political action committee will put its considerable fundraising machine to work for five Republican presidential candidates, the conservative group announced Tuesday.

The club, which advocates for small government and free market policies, will bundle campaign cash for Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas; Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky; Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida; former Gov. Jeb Bush of Florida; and Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin; and is encouraging its donors to give to these contenders, and these contenders only. That means there are 11 who did not make the cut, although the Club For Growth said in a press release that the announcement is not equal to an endorsement.

"Five candidates are at the forefront of the Republican presidential field on issues of economic freedom, and the Club for Growth PAC is standing with them to help them stand out from the rest," Club for Growth President David McIntosh said in a statement. "Senators Cruz, Paul, and Rubio have walked the talk, and have led on pro-growth issues at every opportunity in the Senate.

In competition for the Tea Party's vote in 2016, the Texas Republican has bested Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky with a campaign rollout that GOP strategists say exceeded expectations and was almost flawlessly executed. Announcing for president two weeks later, Paul accomplished nearly the opposite, forcing a swift recalculation about which candidate is best positioned to win over the party's insurgent wing and vie for the nomination.
