Hagel: The White House Tried to ‘Destroy’ Me

In an exclusive interview, Chuck Hagel said the Obama administration micromanaged the Pentagon, stabbed him in the back on the way out — and still has no strategy for fixing Syria.

Jet-lagged from a long overseas trip, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel had just sat down with his wife for a quiet dinner at an upscale Italian restaurant in northern Virginia when his phone rang. It was the White House on the line. President Barack Obama wanted to speak with him.

It was Aug. 30, 2013, and the U.S. military was poised for war. Obama had publicly warned Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad that his regime would face consequences if it crossed a “red line” by employing chemical weapons against its own people. Assad did it anyway, and Hagel had spent the day approving final plans for a barrage of Tomahawk cruise missile strikes against Damascus. U.S. naval destroyers were in the Mediterranean, awaiting orders to fire.

Instead, Obama told a stunned Hagel to stand down. Assad’s Aug. 21 chemical attack in a Damascus suburb had killed hundreds of civilians, but the president said the United States wasn’t going to take any military action against the Syrian government. The president had decided to ignore his own red line — a decision, Hagel believes, that dealt a severe blow to the credibility of both Obama and the United States....

NY Times Stealth-Edits Article to Remove Embarrassing Obama Admission - Mediaite

If you read The New York Times‘ story on President Barack Obama‘s private meeting with news columnists Friday morning, you may have caught one quote that made the President look particularly bad:
In his meeting with the columnists, Mr. Obama indicated that he did not see enough cable television to fully appreciate the anxiety after the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, and made clear that he plans to step up his public arguments.
The President of the United States failed to understand that Americans were anxious after two major terrorist attacks in Western cities because he doesn’t watch TV?...

...But just as the quote was beginning to make the rounds, it disappeared entirely from the the Times piece, without a correction or any indication that the piece had been updated.

Instead, the paragraph in question has been replaced with the following, which doesn’t appear to have any connection to the original paraphrase:
“Mr. Obama argued that while there were potentially threats that would merit the kind of investment of lives and money equivalent to that made in the Iraq war, the Islamic State does not pose an existential threat to the United States and therefore the response should be measured. The United States needs to take on the group, in part to defend allies in the region, he said, but it should not be an all-out war.

Moreover, he added, part of the group’s strategy is to draw the United States into a broader military entanglement in the region. A sustained but limited campaign may be slow and politically unsatisfying, but ultimately will be more successful, he contended.”

How Iranian Women Dressed In The 1970s Revealed In Old Magazines

A Serious Debate for a Country at a Moment of Serious Crisis

Iran impounds more than 40,000 cars for hijab offenses

Iran has impounded tens of thousands of cars since March because women inside the vehicles had not properly covered their hair with a hijab, Tehran’s traffic police said Tuesday.

“Over the past eight months, more than 40,000 cases of bad hijab have been dealt with,” said Brigadier General Teymour Hosseini, quoted by Iran’s ISNA news agency.

“In most cases, the cars were impounded and cases were referred to the judiciary,” he said, while some of the women stopped could face fines or warnings.

Police warned in November that women who fail to observe hijab, the mandatory dress code in Iran, while driving would have their cars impounded for a week.

So what time does Tuesday's Republican debate start?

There’s currently a countdown clock during telecasts (“New Year’s Rockin’ Eve”-style), but the ticker winds down to 6 p.m. Tuesday, which is not even when the main event starts. It's merely the start of pre-debate analysis for the undercard debate, featuring long-shot candidates Mike Huckabee, Lindsey O. Graham, Rick Santorum and George Pataki. The main event with leading candidates including Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Ben Carson starts at 9 p.m.

Not that you can find that start time noted in many places. CNN’s original promo, which began airing before Thanksgiving, informed viewers that the debate would indeed begin at 9.

More recently, however, CNN has advertised the debates — plural — as starting at 6 and 8:30.

On CNN.com, a weekend news story bore the headline, “What time is the #GOPDebate? And everything else you need to know.” This allegedly helpful explainer article told readers that “CNN’s coverage of the first debate will begin at 6:00 p.m. ET and coverage of the second debate will start at 8:30 p.m. ET.” It even mentioned that “CNN will also offer a live stream of the debate on CNN.com’s homepage and across mobile platforms from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET.”

So, you can tune in even earlier online! But you still can’t know what time the #GOPDebate really is.

A new poll shows Donald Trump's lead is bigger than ever. Here's why.

CFRW: CALL TO LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP/WINTER CONFERENCE 2016

NORTHERN DIVISION LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP and WINTER CONFERENCE
JANUARY 30-31, 2016

Dear Federated Women,

I know you are all busy getting ready for Christmas or are Celebrating Hanukkah but please take the time to go to the Northern Division website, ◼ www.cfrwnd.org and download the registration form and information for Leadership and Winter Conference.

Last year was our first year experimenting with this combined event and the overwhelmingly positive response persuaded the board to keep it on a permanent basis. What a relief to be able to travel only once and be able to get twice as energized and informed! As always there is no registration for those attending the Leadership Workshop only, making it a great deal for clubs who want to send all of their members for this action-packed and informative day. Not only will club officers and committee chairs gain new insight into their positions but this workshop gives newer members the opportunity to discover all the different positions possible in a Federated Club and hopefully encourages then to step up and volunteer their talents.

The 2016 Chairs for this event will be Patsy Nelson, 1st Vice President for Leadership Workshop and Cathy Kneer, Regional Director of North Region, as Chair for the Winter Board of Directors meeting and Conference. I know they have two beautiful events being wrapped up for you at the Crowne Plaza in Sacramento and the clubs of the North Region are hard at work to make this event one that you will all enjoy. The conference will begin on Saturday evening after the close of Leadership Workshop with Banquet Speaker Charles Johnson and continue through Sunday afternoon.
Hotel Reservation information is on the website with the Registration Form, as is the Tentative Agenda written by President-Elect Olivia. At this time we will not be accepting on-line registration for this event so please download and return the registration form prior to the January 20th deadline.

I would like to sincerely thank you, the wonderful members of Northern Division, for all of your hard work and successes over the past two years. It has been my absolute pleasure to serve as your President and to visit your clubs and make new friends. I am proud of what we accomplished together and wish each of you continued success as you work for Victory in 2016. My best wishes go to all of the incoming officers and chairs, I know that Olivia and her team will do a fantastic job serving you in the Biennium.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to you all! I’ll see you in Sacramento next January.
