Fiscal Policy Report Card on America's Governors: Are you surprised Jerry Brown was ranked among the worst?

State governments have been in an expansionary phase in recent years. Even though U.S. eco- nomic growth since the last recession has been sluggish, general fund revenues of state govern- ments have grown 33 percent since 2010. Some of the nation’s governors have used the growing revenues to expand spending programs, while others have pursued tax cuts and tax reforms.

That is the backdrop to this year’s 13th biennial s- cal report card on the governors, which examines state budget actions since 2014. It uses statistical data to grade the governors on their taxing and spending records—gov- ernors who have cut taxes and spending the most receive the highest grades, while those who have increased taxes and spending the most receive the lowest grades.

Five governors were awarded an “A” on this report: Paul LePage of Maine, Pat McCrory of North Carolina, Rick Scott of Florida, Doug Ducey of Arizona, and Mike Pence of Indiana. Ten governors were awarded an “F”: Robert Bentley of Alabama, Peter Shumlin of Vermont, Jerry Brown of California, David Ige of Hawaii, Dan Malloy of Connecticut, Dennis Daugaard of South Dakota, Brian Sandoval of Nevada, Kate Brown of Oregon, Jay Inslee of Washington, and Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania.

NBC releases early ratings figures for Trump hosting Saturday Night Live

Entertainment Weekly compares those ratings to Hillary Clinton’s appearance in October:
According to NBC, SNL had a whopping 6.6 household rating on Saturday night, easily beating the season’s previous high: the 41st season premiere last month, hosted by Miley Cyrus and with a guest appearance by none other than … Hillary Clinton. In fact, Trump’s overnight rating was 47 percent higher than the Miley/Hillary episode.

MSNBC to fire Al Sharpton.

Al Sharpton to get the bullet: Politics Nation host on way out as crisis hit MSNBC bins left-wing programming to curb ratings slide - MAIL ONLINE REPORTER

  • Controversial Reverend to lose nightly slot as broadcaster sways from left
  • President Phil Griffin hopes sea change will bring back lost viewers
  • Ed Schultz, Chris Hayes, and Lawrence O'Donnell also in the firing line
  • Sharpton's critics rejoice as gaff-prone anchor's four year stint nears end
MSNBC is set to pull the plug on contentious Reverend Al Sharpton in a last ditch attempt to revive dwindling audience numbers.

The liberal anchor's nightly Politics Nation show is to be shelved by broadcasting bosses as they make drastic changes in the hope of clawing back viewers.

Company President Phil Griffin is believed to be placing his faith in a swing from the left in their Congress coverage - insisting that the station's Republican bashing glory days are now firmly in the past.

A shakeup is likely at MSNBC

As the Daily Caller reports, the continually sagging ratings at MSNBC, particularly in the afternoon and evening, have Phil Griffin looking at some changes… potentially big ones. - HotAir

Some of the most disappointing numbers have come from their latest additions and shifts in the evening lineup. But who is on the chopping block?
Considering a number of their shows are unwatchable — here’s looking at you Chris Hayes and Joy Reid — it’s painfully obvious that MSNBC’s lineup is in need of a serious makeover.

According to TheWrap, Hayes’ crappy ratings are even bringing down those of his TV mentor, Rachel Maddow. Let’s just say Hayes as a lead-in is less than inspiring. His innate preachiness even less so.

MSNBC President Phil Griffin is on the verge of making serious changes to daytime and primetime programs. Those reportedly in trouble include Hayes, who could see his 8 p.m. time slot nixed, Ronan Farrow (whose show is actually fun to hate watch), and the aforementioned Reid.
The ratings for Farrow never got out of the basement, and apparently Joy Reid doesn’t do much better. They manage to lose to CNN, say nothing of Fox which still dominates all time slots, perhaps because rather than having an anchor at least ostensibly reporting on the news as it happens, they fill it up with progressive lectures to the unwashed masses with a list of guests who do nothing but reinforce the media narrative being preached that day.

Surprise: Last night’s SOTU Hits 14-Year Low

America didn’t really care to show up to watch the fifth iteration of a now over-hyped D.C. ritual chock-full of recycled platitudes from an uninspired president only halfheartedly fighting back the throes of an imminent lame-duckery of his own making? …Weird. - HotAir
TV Ratings: State of the Union, With 33.3 Million Viewers, Hits 14-Year Low - Hollywood Reporter

Among the networks carrying the address live were CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, Azteca, Fox Business, Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Al Jazeera America, Galavision and Mun2.

CNN TO REPUBLICANS: DROP DEAD

CNN Chief Jeff Zucker might not be very good at getting ratings for his Nielsens-challenged network, but he’s great at hurling insults. On Friday, Zucker tried to diminish both the Republican Party and Fox News by alleging that the GOP is being run out of Fox. - TONY LEE/BREITBART

CNN has been repeatedly called out for its left-leaning biases that masquerade as "objective" news, which is why the network's primetime ratings hit a 20-year low last year.

It’s an interesting strategy Zucker has: trash the Republican Party and, by extension, all Republicans.

Though Zucker tried to paint Fox as a network that shills for Republicans, Americans do not think so, as more Democrats and independents watch Fox News than CNN and MSNBC. In addition, though Americans once went en masse to CNN to get information about breaking news, that is not the case anymore. Fox News regularly outpaced CNN in ratings when breaking news or tragedies--like the Boston Marathon Bombing--consumed the news cycle last year.

Joe Trippi: More Democrats Watch Fox Than Watch MSNBC - JOHN NOLTE/BREITBART

...Obviously, no small amount of Democrats understand that you really have to watch Fox if you're going to get all the news. Imagine how ignorant we would all be about Libya if all we had access to was CNN, MSNBC, Politico and the rest...

Democrats might not appreciate the openly partisan programming at FNC, but much of the Fox day and evening is filled with some of the best straight news reporting around.

What media liberals fear most isn't the right, it's being exposed as the left.

Death of a Naked Liberal - Sultan Knish

...Newsweek's desperate covers last year amounted to a formerly respected magazine descending into outright trolling. It was no longer possible to tell the difference between Newsweek covers and Newsweek parody covers.

...The dirty little secret of liberal media is that it doesn't work. Outlets that identify explicitly as liberal usually play to a very marginal audience. Mother Jones begs money from its readers in the same obnoxious way as PBS. NPR relies on donors. The New Republic is flailing. Liberal mags that succeed do it by focusing on a topic that overlaps with a liberal target audience and embeds their articles there.

It works for magazines like Rolling Stone and the New Yorker. Online sites like Huffington Post and Buzzfeed succeed by filling themselves with so much trash that the politics becomes a sideline. The liberal brand is fine when it's stuffed into culture, elitist or trashy. It doesn't however stand on its own two feet. It can't, because it has no real appeal.

Liberalism remains marginal. Gallup polls invariably show forty percent of Americans describing themselves as conservative and twenty percent or less identifying as liberal. Liberals dumped the liberal brand after conservatives effectively destroyed it back in the Reagan era. They emphasize policies and rhetoric over political identification because a liberal political identity is toxic.

The cultural dominance of the left did not come about because a majority of Americans knowingly identify with it, but because the left has succeeded in breaking up its agendas into tinier and tinier pieces and making them part of the national dialogue using seemingly agnostic media channels. These stealth tactics have been successful because they eschewed open identification. Liberal media doesn't work when it's transparently liberal. That's why even liberals mock NPR's news coverage.

Liberal media influence works when it isn't identified as such. And when it is identified as such then eighty percent of the country switches the channel and cancels its subscription....

What media liberals fear most isn't the right, it's being exposed as the left. It's not so much what FOX News says, as its very existence that is threatening, because once viewers become aware that FOX represents the right, then, even if they don't agree with it, they have to come around to the conclusion that there is another side and that the media embodies that other side.

Liberalism is marginal, as is MSNBC's audience. Media outlets like Newsweek and MSNBC that go full liberal die. And that lesson has terrible implications for liberal power as a whole.
