The State of CA has injected itself into the doctor-parent relationship; lawmakers can’t see how creepy this is.



...The unspeakable issue at the root of Pan’s 2012 bill was and still is the influx of children from other countries into California’s public schools, who bring with them new strains of measles, mumps, chicken pox and flu bugs, among other communicable diseases. Children who have recently traveled out of the country also bring home infectious diseases.

But it’s not politically correct to address that problem. Instead the Legislature wants everyone else to get vaccinated....

For the past week, the 43-year-old Marin County woman has been savaged as the mom whose comments launched a national furor over “measles parties” — her life turned upside down by a media happy to stereotype Marin as a hippy-dippy haven, and her reputation turned into a social-media plaything for people eager to blow hard about a rumor that turned out to be pure baloney.

She wants to set the record straight....

It all began with a Facebook post from Julie Schiffman, a Marin County mother of two unvaccinated children.

Schiffman wrote about a conversation she had with a mother of vaccinated children. That mother knew about a family with a child who had measles.

She asked if Schiffman was interested in contacting the family as a way to naturally infect her 5-year-old and 8-year-old with measles. Schiffman said “absolutely not.”

A health columnist for KQED television saw the post and contacted Schiffman. The columnist then used the anecdote to lead into a column about the debate over whether to intentionally infect unvaccinated children.

The measles outbreak Timing matches last year’s surge of children across the border

Measles is supposed to be dead and gone from the United States, having been declared “eliminated” by the Centers for Disease Control in 2000. But 15 years later, the disease appears to be back.

The new outbreak has inevitably spawned a contagion of blame, most of it aimed at everything but a likely major contributor.

The term “elimination” is misleading. The CDC defines “elimination” as “the absence of continuous disease transmission for 12 months or more in a specific geographic area.” Measles, the CDC says, “is no longer endemic [or constantly present] in the United States.” Since the year 2000, when measles was declared “eliminated” here, the number of cases has ranged from 37 in 2004 to 644 in all of last year. The numbers were 55 in 2012 and 187 in 2013.

The small anti-vaccination movement was blamed for outbreaks of whooping cough and pertussis in 2012, two other diseases thought to have been eradicated. The so-called “anti-vaxxers,” driven by concerns over the safety of vaccines, are blamed this time, but that may be a diversion of attention from the accurate source of the measles resurgence.

The disease, the CDC says, is brought into the U.S. “by unvaccinated [Americans or foreign visitors] who are infected in other countries.” Nothing has so far been said about President Obama’s having thrown open the southern border last year. The timing of the outbreak coincides with the surge of hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants whom the Obama administration did nothing to discourage....

Led by ThinkProgress.org, the left is covering for Mr. Obama’s immigration schemes, arguing that data from the World Health Organization shows that measles-vaccination rates in Mexico and Central America are higher than the U.S. rate of 92 percent. The president’s political allies argue that this clears the illegals from blame, but the infected poor and usually illiterate youths who streamed across the border unchecked last year may have been drawn from those who were not vaccinated. We don’t know, because there was no screening of the arrivals for disease of any kind, nor whether they had had the vaccinations most American children receive. They were quickly dispersed across the country by the Department of Homeland Security.

“It’s not to prejudice anybody, but we have to deal with reality,” says Dr. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and whose weekly column is published in many newspapers, including The Washington Times. “And if you have people coming into your country who have not been properly screened,” he told CNN, “I don’t think you have to be a genius to figure out that that could introduce some communicable [disease] problems.” KEEP READING

President Obama, in an interview over the weekend with NBC News, encouraged parents to vaccinate their children — but stopped short of saying such a vaccination should be compulsory....

As a candidate for president in 2008, Obama struck a very different tone on the issue than he now does.

“We've seen just a skyrocketing autism rate,” Obama said. “Some people are suspicious that it's connected to the vaccines. ... The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it.”

Another doctor and likely Republican presidential candidate, Rand Paul (R-Ky.) was skewered on CNBC for his statement that “vaccines are one of the greatest medical breakthroughs that we’ve had, but that for most of our history vaccines have been voluntary” and that “I guess I don’t understand... why that would be controversial.”

Liberal commentators and mainstream reporters have begun suggesting that opposition to vaccines is a Tea Party phenomenon, thus opening the door for pious lectures about the dangers of “anti-government” sentiment.

This is the standard nonsense of the political debate....

Data suggest that most vaccine opposition comes from wealthy, white, secular, liberal enclaves. But Rand Paul’s comments — that vaccine mandates are a "liberty" issue — suggest a strain of vaccination skepticism is present on the Right....

Vaccine opposition also finds roots in a dislike of government micromanaging our lives. Government tells us what light bulbs we can have, it forces us to buy health insurance, it requires permits and inspections before we can erect a Rubbermaid toll shed, it makes our showers and toilets weaker, and it bans large soft drinks (except at 7-Eleven).

When government weighs in on these matters, where it has no legitimate role and little or no scientific basis, it fosters a skepticism and opposition to government interventions. That skepticism persists even when the science and the moral authority are present.

The elites — through overreach, cronyism and incompetence — have lost the public trust. One casualty might be public health.

MEASLES OUTBREAK

◼ Many have speculated, but now a top federal health official is confirming that the outbreak of measles traced to several Disney theme parks was likely caused by a foreign visitor or an American who had recently returned from a trip outside the country.

...n 2000, the Centers for Disease Control had thought that measles were eliminated in the US, but starting in 2008, cases began to climb. In 2014, the number of cases exploded to over 600, more than all reported cases between 2009 and 2013. The CDC also reported that cases reached a 20-year high in 2014.

The CDC determined that the number of cases grew in the US due to an influx of foreign immigrants.

There is no treatment for measles once it is contracted. Patients should stay hydrated as they ride the illness out. Authorities say the only prevention is widespread vaccination.

They risked and persisted, sacrificed and saved. Editor Nancy Gibbs explains why the Ebola Fighters are TIME's choice for Person of the Year 2014...

For decades, Ebola haunted rural African villages like some mythic monster that every few years rose to demand a human sacrifice and then returned to its cave. It reached the West only in nightmare form, a Hollywood horror that makes eyes bleed and organs dissolve and doctors despair because they have no cure.

But 2014 is the year an outbreak turned into an epidemic, powered by the very progress that has paved roads and raised cities and lifted millions out of poverty. This time it reached crowded slums in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone; it traveled to Nigeria and Mali, to Spain, Germany and the U.S. It struck doctors and nurses in unprecedented numbers, wiping out a public-health infrastructure that was weak in the first place. One August day in Liberia, six pregnant women lost their babies when hospitals couldn’t admit them for complications. Anyone willing to treat Ebola victims ran the risk of becoming one.

Which brings us to the hero’s heart. There was little to stop the disease from spreading further. Governments weren’t equipped to respond; the World Health Organization was in denial and snarled in red tape. First responders were accused of crying wolf, even as the danger grew. But the people in the field, the special forces of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the Christian medical-relief workers of Samaritan’s Purse and many others from all over the world fought side by side with local doctors and nurses, ambulance drivers and burial teams....

Those who contracted the disease encountered pain like they had never known. “It hurts like they are busting your head with an ax,” Karwah says. One doctor overheard his funeral being planned. Asked if surviving Ebola changed him, Dr. Kent Brantly turns the question around. “I still have the same flaws that I did before,” he says. “But whenever we go through a devastating experience like what I’ve been through, it is an incredible opportunity for redemption of something. We can say, How can I be better now because of what I’ve been through? To not do that is kind of a shame.”

So that is the next challenge: What will we do with what we’ve learned? This was a test of the world’s ability to respond to potential pandemics, and it did not go well.

California issues quarantine policy...

◼ Anyone arriving in California from an Ebola-affected area and who has had personal contact with a person infected with the deadly virus will be quarantined for 21 days, according to an order issued Wednesday by the state's (California's) public health director. - LA Times
In California, county health officials will have the ability to screen passengers arriving from Ebola-stricken regions in West Africa, or who have worked with infected patients, to determine if they’re at risk for the disease and if they should be quarantined for the virus' three-week incubation period.

Failure to comply with a quarantine order could result in misdemeanor criminal charges.

The poll, from CBS News, shows a whopping 80 percent of people want American citizens and legal residents returning from West Africa to be quarantined until it is determined that they are Ebola-free. Another 17 percent think they should be allowed to enter the country if they are symptom-free at the time.

The poll, notably, did not specify just how long such people would need to be quarantined -- about 21 days -- or where they would be quarantined.

CDC admitted disease imported as states data reveals illegal immigrant links

◼ In straightforward defiance against the White House position of non-transparency, previous communication from the Center for Disease Control discovered Tuesday acknowledged that 97 percent of the measles found in United States this year could be attributed to “importations from at least 18 countries.” - Examiner.com

Soon, after school doors opened this semester, doctors and hospitals across the country began tackling massive flare-ups of infectious diseases and severe respiratory illness among children. Experts have called these outbreak unprecedented.

“It’s worse in terms of scope of critically ill children who require intensive care,” noted Children’s Mercy Hospital’s division director for Infectious Diseases, Dr. Mary Anne Jackson. I've practiced for 30 years in pediatrics, and I’ve never seen anything quite like this.”

While analyzing hundreds of documents, articles, and releases for this article, this examiner discovered on Tuesday that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) disclosed in a May 29, 2014 press release that “nearly all cases of measles this year have been associated with international travel by unvaccinated people.” As thousands of illegal immigrants from South and Central America crossed over the U.S.-Mexico border, the CDC recognized that this was “the largest number of measles cases in the United States in the first five months of a year since 1994.”

By the end of May, CDC also declared that 97 percent of the measles cases “were associated with importations from at least 18 countries. More than one in seven cases has led to hospitalization.”

From Jan. 1 to Oct. 11, 2014, the CDC announced that 599 confirmed cases of measles were reported with 18 outbreaks in 22 states. In 2013 and 2012 there were only 187 and 55 cases reported.

Measles, respiratory illness, tuberculosis and other communicable diseases continue as a prime concern for the millions of Americans conflicted about the perpetual arrivals of illegal immigrants pouring into the country. While some diseases have emerged from the Philippines, Africa, Asia and Europe, the unprecedented amount of undocumented aliens is a major issue.

Perhaps the White House doesn't want Americans to know that out of over 70,000 illegal immigrant children who crossed into the U.S. almost 48,000 came from Honduras, Guatemala and Salvador. In these countries measles and the EV-D68 virus are quite common. If we include these children's family and friends, not listed an "unaccompanied," over a quarter of a million people from Central and South America have entered the U.S. illegally this year.

From 1970 to 2005 there were only 26 cases of EV-D68 ever reported in America. The number in 2014 is approaching 1,000 cases, with about 10 percent of those cases known to be causing a polio-type virus that has left children crippled.

Ebola in New York: Feel O.K.?

...But the Spencer scenario is a provocation. The germ trail, a sequence of familiar banalities, hits home. First, the apartment building: minds turn to door handles and elevator buttons. Next, the subway, including the L train, an essential interborough connector. Those of us fearless about gripping handrails might now think twice. Uber: the nifty new conveyance, abruptly associated with an alliterative plague. The High Line: the virus, like any tourist, hitting the hot spots on a tour of Bloombergian New York. Finally, the bowling: as a precaution, the parlor, called (evocatively) the Gutter, shut down, and a concert there was cancelled. You don’t have to be a germaphobe to have misgivings about the finger holes in bowling balls, but the mention of Ebola has the effect of a shark fin seen at the beach. Everybody out. The Ebowla jokes appeared early and often.

Did Spencer take the risk of infection too lightly, or was he acting rationally? Are we?

◼ Ron Klain, the newly appointed White House Ebola response coordinator, was one of the senior White House officials who advised that President Obama should visit solar power company Solyndra in 2011, despite an auditor raising red flags about the company’s finances. - Daily Caller
According to The Washington Post, Klain was one of the “key players” in the scandal while he worked for Vice President Joe Biden: “Ron Klain, then Biden’s chief of staff, dismissed auditor’s concerns about Solyndra’s solvency, reasoning that all innovative companies come with risk.”

Another Solyndra email, reported by Fox News, indicated that Biden’s office were all fans of Solyndra, and that the staff “about had an orgasm” at the prospect of an Energy Department loan.

Who Do They Think We Are?

◼ The administration’s Ebola evasions reveal its disdain for the American people. - Peggy Noonan/Wall St.Journal
The administration’s handling of the Ebola crisis continues to be marked by double talk, runaround and gobbledygook. And its logic is worse than its language. In many of its actions, especially its public pronouncements, the government is functioning not as a soother of public anxiety but the cause of it.

An example this week came in the dialogue between Megyn Kelly of Fox News and Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control....

In testimony before Congress Thursday, Dr. Frieden was not much more straightforward. His answers often sound like filibusters: long, rolling paragraphs of benign assertion, advertising slogans—“We know how to stop Ebola,” “Our focus is protecting people”—occasionally extraneous data, and testimony to the excellence of our health-care professionals.

It is my impression that everyone who speaks for the government on this issue has been instructed to imagine his audience as anxious children. It feels like how the pediatrician talks to the child, not the parents. It’s as if they’ve been told: “Talk, talk, talk, but don’t say anything. Clarity is the enemy.”

The language of government now is word-spew....

All of which returns me to my thoughts the past few weeks. Back then I’d hear the official wordage that doesn’t amount to a logical thought, and the unspoken air of “We don’t want to panic you savages,” and I’d look at various public officials and muse: “Who do you think you are?”

Now I think, “Who do they think we are?”

Does the government think if America is made to feel safer, she will forget the needs of the Ebola nations? But Americans, more than anyone else, are the volunteers, altruists and in a few cases saints who go to the Ebola nations to help. And they were doing it long before the Western media was talking about the disease, and long before America was experiencing it.

Alarm after vomiting passenger dies on flight from Nigeria to JFK


◼ A plane from Nigeria landed at JFK Airport Thursday with a male passenger aboard who had died during the flight after a fit of vomiting — and CDC officials conducted a “cursory” exam before announcing there was no Ebola and turning the corpse over to Port Authority cops to remove, Rep. Peter King said on Thursday. - NY Post

The unnamed, 63-year-old passenger had boarded an Arik Air plane out of Lagos, Nigeria, on Wednesday night, a federal law enforcement source said.

During the flight, the man had been vomiting in his seat, the source said. Some time before the plane landed, he passed away. Flight crew contacted the CDC, federal customs officials and Port Authority police, who all boarded the plane at around 6 a.m. as about 145 worried passengers remained on board, the source said.

“The door [to the terminal] was left open, which a lot of the first responders found alarming,” said the source.

Already, the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has identified 88 people arriving from the Ebola nations thought to have symptoms of the virus, but all were cleared. However, the report said that the diagnosis of some patients was delayed “because of hesitancy by healthcare providers to examine patients or by laboratory workers to handle specimens.”

The city has distributed posters for airports and other ports of entry asking those entering America to reveal their travel history and current illness.

The CDC also included a detailed explanation sheet on what officials should look for and subsequently do if Ebola is detected.

FOR GOD'S SAKE, GET A GRIP!


◼ New York Daily News Drops 6-Word Headline Bomb on People Who Still Believe Obama’s a Great President - IJ REVIEW

The New York Daily News must have seen this coming for awhile. After all, the editors endorsed GOP challenger Mitt Romney in 2012 over their 2008 pick of Barack Obama.

But the cover of Thursday’s edition took the paper’s frustration with the President and his administration’s handling of the Ebola outbreak and put it all out there on full display. Giving a sneak peek on Twitter, the paper held absolutely nothing back....

Either way, the President likely isn’t too happy with the publication’s headline today. This backlash, coupled with the damning LA Times editorial on the “Ebola crisis of confidence,” is forcing Americans and the media to question the President and his administration’s ability to handle this virus.

There had never been a case of Ebola in the U.S. until a few months ago. Since then, thousands of people have died of the disease in Africa, and millions upon millions of dollars have been spent treating Ebola patients in the U.S. who acquired it there, one of whom has died.

But the Obama administration refuses to impose a travel ban.

This summer, the U.S. government imposed a travel ban on Israel simply to pressure Prime Minister Netanyahu into accepting a ceasefire agreement. But we can't put a travel restriction on countries where a contagious disease is raging.

It's becoming increasingly clear this is just another platform for Obama to demonstrate that we are citizens of the world. The entire Ebola issue is being discussed -- by our government, not the United Nations -- as if Liberians are indistinguishable from Americans, and U.S. taxpayers should be willing to pay whatever it takes to save them.

Maybe we should give them the vote, too! If Ebola was concentrated in Finland and Norway -- certainly Israel! -- we'd have had a travel ban on Day One....KEEP READING...

According to the New York Post, officials made the decision in an effort to minimize fear and panic since the radio channels are often monitored by civilians and the media.

The Post reports that dispatchers have been instructed to use the code ‘F/T' when discussing callers that have a fever and have a history of travel to West Africa.

A contractor for Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is livid that his supervisor forced him to remove a mask and gloves he wore to work Wednesday.

“One of the supervisors told me I wasn’t allowed to wear that because it’ll cause a panic for people and they’ll start tripping out and stuff,” said Pablo Medina.

He’s frightened after learning the latest Dallas Ebola patient, Amber Vinson passed through an exit where he was working. Medina was helping direct travelers to their gates Monday night.

John Boehner to Obama: Ban flights for Ebola

◼ House Speaker John Boehner urged the White House on Wednesday to consider banning flights from West African countries plagued by Ebola.

"The administration must be able to assure Americans that we will stop the spread here at home," Boehner said.
