Maine Just Changed Their Food-Stamp Policy… Every State Should Do This

◼ Basically work to earn a living, and if you want Food Stamps then you must volunteer at least 20 hours a week of community service, Or Lose your benefits! - Conservative Tribune

The work requirement is simple common sense. If taxpayers are to subsidize people’s income — a bad idea to begin with — taxpayers should get something in return. Knowing that the folks they are helping are using the handout to improve their own lives, and thus society, is one such benefit; the improvement to their communities brought about by a potential 240,000 new volunteer hours worked across the state is another.

California issues quarantine policy...

◼ Anyone arriving in California from an Ebola-affected area and who has had personal contact with a person infected with the deadly virus will be quarantined for 21 days, according to an order issued Wednesday by the state's (California's) public health director. - LA Times
In California, county health officials will have the ability to screen passengers arriving from Ebola-stricken regions in West Africa, or who have worked with infected patients, to determine if they’re at risk for the disease and if they should be quarantined for the virus' three-week incubation period.

Failure to comply with a quarantine order could result in misdemeanor criminal charges.

The poll, from CBS News, shows a whopping 80 percent of people want American citizens and legal residents returning from West Africa to be quarantined until it is determined that they are Ebola-free. Another 17 percent think they should be allowed to enter the country if they are symptom-free at the time.

The poll, notably, did not specify just how long such people would need to be quarantined -- about 21 days -- or where they would be quarantined.

In an interview with MailOnline, Fort Kent´s Chief Tom Pelletier said he plans to go visit her to welcome her home personally. And he went even further, saying that he has no intention of restricting the nurse´s movements even if Maine Gov. Paul LePage orders that she should return to quarantine.

After recalls suddenly grabbed hold of the nation's attention in 2012, anyone could have been excused for thinking they might have gone back to being little used, frequently ignored weapons this year. But 2013 proved such expectations wrong. Despite a sharp drop in their total number, recall elections once again managed to place themselves on centerstage in American politics.

Unlike in Wisconsin in 2012, the most prominent recalls of 2013 did not appear to be stark Democrat versus Republican fights. Instead, it was a hot button political issue — the fight over gun control — that allowed recalls to push their way into the spotlight.

Colorado, for instance, saw some of its most expensive state legislative elections in history: Two Democratic state senators — including the State Senate president — were kicked out and a third resigned, over the state's new gun control laws....

Already, there are at least 25 recalls scheduled for next year, starting on January 2.

Rubio: “I hope people back home fully understand what this means... If you do not buy health insurance, the IRS is going to be on your back and chasing you. They’re going to take away your refund, they’re going to increase your fees, they’re going to come after you.”

"We the people have been told there is no choice," he said. "You must buy health insurance or pay the new Gestapo -- the IRS."

...The governor added that Maine will not move forward the ACA's insurance exchanges -- the marketplaces where individuals can shop for health plans from private companies -- until the proposed $800 million tab to pay for them passes Congress.

"With these looming uncertainties circling around this issue, Maine cannot move forward right now with Obamacare," LePage said.

The governor finished his radio address by outlining his ideological opposition to the health-care law, which he said "raises taxes, cuts Medicare for the elderly, gets between patients and their doctors, costs trillions of taxpayer dollars, and kills jobs."

"Even more disheartening is that reviving the American dream just became nearly impossible to do," he said. "We are now a nation which supports dependency rather than independence. Instead of encouraging self-reliance, we are encouraging people to rely on the government."

The health care law "includes the largest set of tax law changes in more than 20 years," according to the Treasury inspector general who oversees the IRS. The agency will have to hire thousands of workers to manage it, requiring significant budget increases that already are being targeted by congressional Republicans determined to dismantle the president's signature initiative.

They’re going to take away your refund, they’re going to increase your fees, they’re going to come after you.”

Rubio argued that millions of Americans will face being “out of compliance” with the IRS for not having health insurance coverage.

“Somehow the Obama administration thinks that’s a victory,” he said. “That’s everything you need to know about that administration.”

This throws the entire race into chaos, as Maine’s two Democratic House members will have to take a fresh look at a promotion, and the Maine Republican Party will have to desperately grope for a new candidate to run in her stead....

There is very obviously something going on here behind the scenes, since Senator Snowe was so aggressively campaigning for re-election, and in full campaign mode for the last year. Decisions like this – being so very much running (and winning) to very much not – do not happen this abruptly in politics. Ever.

Snowe’s reason for taking a pass on re-election, especially when she was so enthusiastically running up to this point, and especially as close to the filing deadline as this is, are mysterious. As I said before, this kind of thing does not happen in politics.

I am told her own staff was unaware of this decision until just hours before the statement went out – just long enough to actually work on the release and send it out.

Controversy in Maine

Maine Republican Party chairman Charlie Webster has admitted that the state party made numerous clerical errors in counting the state’s caucus results — even omitting some votes because emails reporting tallies “went to spam” in an email account.

However, Webster insisted that the errors did not change the outcome.

On Saturday, he had declared former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney the winner of Maine’s Presidential Preference Poll by fewer than 200 votes, even though not all municipalities had reported results.
“There were clerical errors that did not significantly change the numbers. There were several smaller towns that were left out, the reporting was wrong. … We’ve corrected those clerical errors and will send those numbers out [soon],” said Webster...

The GOP Maine caucuses were held from February 4th through February 11th. Those caucuses were slated to be counted as official caucus votes. Any caucuses outside that time period would not be counted. After the count, thought to be the official count, Mitt Romney won over Ron Paul by 200 votes. Big problems now however. Some county votes within the proper timeline were not counted. State tally sheets were simply blank. It was a “clerical error.” Washington County was forced to change their caucuses to the next Saturday (outside the designated timeline) due to a snowstorm, and now want their votes counted. It’s a mess in Maine and you have to consider that it might be by design.

ROMNEY WINS CPAC TAKES MAINE, PAUL CLOSE SECOND

At CPAC, the former Massachusetts governor nabbed 38 percent of activists’ support to edge out Rick Santorum, who finished second with 31 percent.

In Maine, he won by just three points, 39 percent to Paul’s 36 percent. Santorum trailed in third with 18 percent, and Newt Gingrich received 6 percent of the vote.
