...Trump is what the shrinks call the 'presenting complaint." The real problem, as is often the case in psychotherapy, is something entirely different. And it is this: the left is dead. It's not only dead, it's decomposed with no there there or anywhere.

Only dopes or con artists believe in socialism anymore (hello, Venezuela!) and identity politics has been exposed as the racist shell game it is with blacks and Latinos actually doing better than they have in decades under the current pro-capitalist administration.

So the left has nothing to say, only most of them don't quite realize it yet. But this blockage, this reluctance and even inability to deal with what is actually happening shuts down the brain and emerges as anger, the hamster wheel of constant rage against Trump....

...When a successful man in his 70s is screaming profanities at another septuagenarian, to wild applause, it seems safe to say the whole country has lost its bloody mind.

Two things about this bout of madness are striking. The first is that not just celebrities but ordinary adults as well have started to make public displays that would have horrified them a few years back — and yet they are still outraged when the other side throws a similar tantrum. The second is that everyone defends this behavior as having been made necessary by the appalling outbursts across the aisle.

Point out that until about three minutes ago, feminists did not think “c--t” was an acceptable term of abuse for any woman, and they retort that Trump supporters went there first. Ask Trump supporters why they voted for a man whose language can’t be accurately reported without the use of strategic dashes, and they are apt to respond that he’s necessary to combat outrageous lefty attack dogs. Public discourse is dissolving into wailing whataboutism.

It’s all awful. But the cause of this seeming outbreak of mass psychosis may not really be too mysterious. Game theory may offer an explanation — specifically, a famous strategy known as “tit-for-tat.” ...

It may seem a trifle Pollyanna-ish to hope for such mass self-reform. But the alternative is to keep escalating toward mutually assured destruction. And as we learned from “WarGames,” one of my favorite childhood movies, the only way to win a game like that is not to play.

The New York Times’ agenda wasn’t to generate sympathy for the Nazi, it was to inject into the public discourse the notion that the average American was, and could actually be, a literal Nazi. The event was advertised as something that was supposed to be about infrastructure, but it was obvious from the beginning that the president had any number of other things on his mind. It was just as obvious that the media was hoping to get a piece of him, to bait him. None of it worked. Trump appeared to enjoy every moment of the hostile back and forth. Moreover, he had three truths he wanted to communicate to the American people, and so that is exactly what he did and we are now a better country for it.

1. "Not all of those people were neo-Nazis."...

...In other words, Trump is breaking through the media narrative that instantly defines anyone opposed to tearing down confederate statues as a Nazi:

Those people — all of those people — excuse me. I've condemned neo-Nazis. I've condemned many different groups. But not all of those people were neo-Nazis, believe me. Not all of those people were White Supremacists, by any stretch. Those people were also there because they wanted to protest the taking down of a statue, Robert E. Lee.

And you take a look at some of the groups and you see — and you'd know it if you were honest reporters, which in many cases you're not, but many of those people were there to protest the taking down of the statue of Robert E. Lee.

Some East Bay conservatives say they live a secret life. They can never tell anyone what they really feel like in fear of their safety.

Robert Ward is coming out conservative, but in a place he says is risky for those who share his beliefs.

“If you witness what happened in Berkeley, actually they are so violent on top of it. I mean being a conservative in the Bay Area is like being a heretic,” says Ward. “You lead a double life. You can never tell your friends and co-workers.”

Robert says several Bay Area conservatives have secret meet ups like the one KPIX 5 was invited to visit in the East Bay.

Organizers asked not to disclose their location or the faces of anyone who attended, but insist this is the way it has to be in a liberal state.

“They seem to pride themselves on being diverse, and they are diverse about everything but their ideology,” says Ward. “I hope that in the future when people see Trump isn’t as scary as they think he is and a lot of the good things that happen and the prosperity comes back and the jobs come back, every one calms down a little bit.”
