Olive Oil, Tea Kettles, and Toasters... The Untold Brexit Story The EU’s overly meddlesome regulations helped drive a wedge between itself and the UK
Frustration over EU regs like how to serve olive oil in restaurants contributed to #BREXIT https://t.co/G1BWOBTB7E https://t.co/V6HLFwAoXg
— Legal Insurrection (@LegInsurrection) June 28, 2016
Forget immigration assimilation issues, terrorism, financial woes, what and how people ate became a regulatory priority. Sound familiar?
A handful of overly nitpicky proposals illustrate a microcosm of broader frustration.
In 2013, the EU pissed off the entire union over a proposal that would’ve banned those little refillable jars of olive oil kept on restaurant tables for delicious bread-dipping in favor of sealable jars.
...The EU has kept new eco-restrictions for high-powered appliances like hair dryers, tea kettles, and toasters close-chested until after the Brexit referendum vote, for fear the new regulations would be perceived as targeting Britain’s favorite breakfast — tea and toast. Doesn’t matter so much now but still, toasters and kettles?

“Keeping and caring for dogs is haram (forbidden) according to religious leaders”
Iran cracks down on 'vulgar Western' dog owners... https://t.co/OYZOjK3pAu
— DRUDGE REPORT (@DRUDGE_REPORT) June 25, 2016
One unnamed dog owner in Shahin Shahr in Isfahan province told Iran’s Shahrvand newspaper that officials had shown up suddenly at his house last week.
“We were shown a piece of paper indicating they were from the municipal veterinary office. They came in and took away our dogs under the pretext of vaccination,” he said.
The owner was told he could recover the dog after its vaccination, but when he went to the vet’s office they had no record of his case.
Instead, the newspaper said the confiscations were the result of a crackdown launched by local prosecutor Mohsen Boosaidi.
“Keeping and caring for dogs is haram (forbidden) according to religious leaders,” Boosaidi told the Fars news agency on June 19.
“If we find out that anyone is keeping and caring for dogs and so is promoting vulgar Western culture, we will deal with them firmly.” ...

Iranian police arrested 50 women for 'un-Islamic' dress
◼ Morality police detain women in boots and leggings. - Jerusalem Post
Some of the women's husbands tried to stop the arrests, to no avail, running to clothing stores to buy their wives more suitable attire.
The women were detained for several hours and then were forced to sign a statement not to repeat their actions and to follow the Islamic and Iranian culture traditions.
The latest fashion trend for Iranian ladies is high heeled winter boots with tight leggings ("supports" in Persian). This style is considered a symbol of social status for young women, as well as a revolt against the strict rules of the regime.

UK Islamist: ‘I Want to See Every Single Woman in This Country Covered from Head to Toe’
◼ Rumaysah and his Islamist confidants patrol the streets of East London, chastising British citizens for not complying with Islamic law. In a series of videos, they can be seen harassing women for inappropriate dress, rebuking men for drinking alcohol, and calling a man “dirty” on the suspicion that he is gay. - Washington Free Beacon
“Ultimately, I want to see every single woman in this country covered from head to toe,” Rumaysah told 60 Minutes correspondent Clarissa Ward. “I want to the see the hand of the thief cut. I want to see adulterers stoned to death. I want to see sharia law in Europe, and I want to see it in America, as well. I believe our patrols are a means to an end.”

A progressive cannot ask the question “Is there something about Islam that makes it more violent and oppressive than other religions?” This question cannot be asked on the left. It doesn’t compute. It’s like asking a normal person “What does purple smell like?”
...imagine if Obama were instead pontificating about other religions. What if he said, “Roman Catholicism is a religion of choice, and real Roman Catholics reject the notion that the Pope is infallible and they support abortion.” What if he said, “Every real Jew knows the Orthodox Jews are a fanatical fringe and reject their literal obedience to the Talmud.” People might question his qualifications to make such judgments about religions.
When it comes to religion, the progressive left has two thoughts. 1. All religions are pretty much equal, but Christianity is less equal and 2. All religions are bullsh-t. And the progressive mind can’t move outside that box, and can’t conceive of Islam being other than what progressivism thinks Islam should be; another bullsh-t religion just with browner people and different food. A progressive cannot ask the question “Is there something about Islam that makes it more violent and oppressive than other religions?” This question cannot be asked on the left. It doesn’t compute. It’s like asking a normal person “What does purple smell like?”

Where are the freedom-loving Democrats?
It's not just the political and cultural Left's increasingly totalitarian mindset in demanding that only its views be permitted that bothers me; it's that more and more people aligned with the Left politically, i.e., rank-and-file Democrats, are outright supporting this trend or willingly looking the other way.
This is Barack Obama's America. He has established a climate wherein dissent from his and the Left's "values" is reason for ostracism -- and worse....
◼ Chomsky: Obama ‘Determined To Demolish The Foundations Of Our Civil Liberties’ - Scott Greer/Daily Caller
Progressive hero Noam Chomsky is terrified of the surveillance state that has developed during the tenure of President Barack Obama, calling it a grave threat to our fundamental civil liberties.
In a column published Monday, Chomsky writes that the documents revealed to the public by Edward Snowden show a system that is flagrantly violating the principles of the Constitution....
The scope and depth of the National Security Agency’s surveillance program is what particularly troubles the retired MIT professor and leads him to conclude that our current president is set on undermining the foundations of our society....
◼ Noam Chomsky: A Surveillance State Beyond Imagination Is Being Created in One of the World's Freest Countries - Alternet
...It is of no slight import that the project is being executed in one of the freest countries in the world, and in radical violation of the U.S. Constitution’s Bill of Rights, which protects citizens from ‘unreasonable searches and seizures,’ and guarantees the privacy of their persons, houses, papers and effects,” Chomsky said.
“Much as government lawyers may try, there is no way to reconcile these principles with the assault on the population revealed in the Snowden documents....
The documents unveil a remarkable project to expose to state scrutiny vital information about every person who falls within the grasp of the colossus — in principle, every person linked to the modern electronic society...
As the colossus fulfills its visions, in principle every keystroke might be sent to President Obama’s huge and expanding databases in Utah....
In other ways too, the constitutional lawyer in the White House seems determined to demolish the foundations of our civil liberties. The principle of the presumption of innocence, which dates back to Magna Carta 800 years ago, has long been dismissed to oblivion....
Where are the freedom-loving Democrats?

Iran: Men Have The Right To Rape Unveiled Women…
...(Hadi) Sharifi (a “media activist” (I.e. Regime propaganda activist) said that if women feel it is their right to show off their beauty, or appear any which way they desire in society, or reveal their beauty to men, then they should also consider the right of men to enjoy women. He attempted to explain that because it is natural and instinctual for a man to be drawn to the beauty of a woman and seek sex with her, it is a man’s right to benefit from what he loves. Sharifi said that when a man forces himself onto a woman because she is “showing off her beauty”, this [should not] be considered rape....
