How the crazy Trump Muslim database story got started









I asked Walker and Yahoo to provide a transcript or audio of the interview, and late Friday afternoon they posted a three-minute-19-second excerpt. Probably the best way to describe Trump's reaction when Walker raised the database question is to say Trump didn't address it at all. Trump certainly did not say, or even suggest, that he wouldn't rule out a Muslim database. Here is a transcript of the excerpt Yahoo posted:
WALKER: On Paris, I know you've said we might need some sort of national version of the surveillance program that we saw the NYPD do here on Muslims. And I'm a Brooklyn guy, I know you know Ray Kelly. Is he someone you might consider for a role in the Trump administration?

TRUMP: Sure. Ray's a great guy. Ray did a fabulous job as commissioner. We have a very good commissioner now in Bratton. But Ray did a fabulous job as commissioner. And sure, Ray would be somebody I would certainly consider.

WALKER: As you know, it looks like legally states can't do much to stop Obama from accepting these Syrian refugees. So that means that if you're president, they'll probably be here —

TRUMP: No, they're going to be gone. They will go back. And I've said it before the fact, and everybody hears what I say, including them, believe it or not, but if they're here, they have to go back. Because we cannot take a chance. You look at the migration — it's young, strong men. We cannot take a chance that the people coming over here are going to be ISIS-affiliated. And if you know some of the people — I don't know if you heard this, they're already missing. Some of the people that have come here. Did you know that?

WALKER: No.

TRUMP: They're already gone.

WALKER: Wow.

TRUMP: At least two.

WALKER: France declared this state of emergency where they closed the borders and they established some degree of warrantless searches. I know how you feel about the borders, but do you think there is some kind of state of emergency here, and do we need warrantless searches of Muslims?

TRUMP: Well, we're going to have to do things that we never did before. And some people are going to be upset about it, but I think that now everybody is feeling that security is going to rule. And certain things will be done that we never thought would happen in this country in terms of information and learning about the enemy.

WALKER: Absolutely.

TRUMP: So we're going to have to do certain things that were frankly unthinkable a year ago. When you look at what's happening — I mean now they say they're going to attack Washington, which is probably not going to happen, because unlike our presiden t— he tells people exactly what we're going to do — they're going to probably say the opposite, but it's a camouflage. But we have to err on the side of security for our people and our nation.

WALKER: And in terms of doing this, to pull off the kind of tracking we need, do you think we might need to register Muslims in some type of database, or note their religion on their ID?

TRUMP: Well, we're going to have to look at a lot of things very closely. We're going to have to look at the mosques. We're going to have to look very, very carefully. We have a president that refuses to say radical Islamic terrorism. He refuses to say it, which is the biggest shock in the world, because how can you not say it, if you don't say it, you're not going to get to the problem.

WALKER: Yeah.

TRUMP: And then you had Hillary Clinton refuse to say it also, because she's taking her orders from the president. So we have a real problem. It's a problem having to do with radical Islamic terrorism —

WALKER: Right.

TRUMP: And it has to be solved. And unless Obama is going to finally 'fess up and admit that, he's never going to solve the problem. And he's not going to solve it anyway, Hunter, because I watched his press conference yesterday. It was sad. It was pathetic. He wasn't angry at the people who did the killing — he was more angry at the reporter.
That was it. With the scoop in hand, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow jumped into action...

Trump's offhand decision to tell MSNBC he would implement a database was an enormously stupid thing to do. And by Friday afternoon, Trump tweeted, "I didn't suggest a database -- a reporter did. We must defeat Islamic terrorism & have surveillance, including a watch list, to protect America."

But the damage had been done. In the end, the responsibility is always the candidate's to be on guard for attempts, by journalists or rival campaign operatives, to entice him into saying damaging things. Sometimes those are attempts to create a story out of nothing. The Muslim database affair seems a particularly audacious example of that.

Planned Parenthood backtracks hack story





...Later Thursday, the original message was taken down and replaced with a note that made no mention of the hack at all. "Our normal site is currently undergoing maintenance," it said. "Below you will find information to help you find a Planned Parenthood health center, book an appointment, and get involved with Planned Parenthood." Instead of redirecting users to another page on the site, the button now provides a phone number for donations.

As of Thursday afternoon, Planned Parenthood had not removed its Facebook post on the hack which says that "today, anti-abortion extremist hackers brought down plannedparenthood.org."

The alleged hack comes in the wake of several undercover videos that reveal high-level Planned Parenthood executives trafficking fetal organs and just days after Planned Parenthood hired crisis PR firm SKDKnickerbocker.

Why did Lena Dunham say her alleged assailant was a Republican?

Media gossip site Gawker claims to have found out who was actually the man who allegedly raped comedienne Lena Dunham while she was a student at Oberlin College. But despite her book’s description of her rapist as the “resident conservative,” the man fingered by Gawker appears to be a registered Democrat. (RELATED: Who, If Anyone, Raped Lena Dunham?)

Breitbart’s John Nolte already demonstrated that much of the information about Dunham’s rapist in her book, “Not That Kind Of Girl,” was blatantly false. Dunham herself was forced to apologize for writing an account that falsely pointed the finger at a prominent Oberlin conservative named “Barry.”

But Gawker identified another man using Dunham’s original 2012 book proposal, which contained a significantly different description of her alleged rapist. The extra details, such as the fact that he was Jewish and the son of an NPR host, point the finger at another easily identifiable individual.... KEEP READING

RAPE HOAXES AND POLITICIZED ‘JUSTICE’

◼ An appropriately incredulous observation from someone who did the kind of basic investigative work the mainstream media is now largely incapable of, when the story in question violates their precious political narratives: - John Hayward/Human Events @Doc_o



Mr. Nolte did nothing more controversial than read Dunham’s intensely weird memoir, observe that she accused a very specific individual of raping her in college, and conduct the sort of fact-checking safari that Dunham’s publishers are going to deeply regret blowing off...

...Nolte’s piece meticulously details his investigative work, which was Journalism 101 stuff: does this person really exist, what does he have to say for himself, do the details in Dunham’s account check out, and so forth. Dunham’s publishers, and the left-wing media people who comprise the bulk of her audience, did none of this essential groundwork because (a) she is liberal royalty who (b) told a Narrative-friendly account of campus rape which (c) pointedly implicated a Republican. Not a single soul on the Left needed to hear another word, including those given to fact-checking “Saturday Night Live” comedy skits that mock His Sacred Majesty Barack I. (In addition to Narrative validation and the special privileges afforded to liberal aristocracy, one can’t help noticing that liberals don’t mind reading memoirs full of whoppers, notably including Barack Obama’s. They have a boundless appetite for mythology about their heroes, and believe it is important to revere them without question, to demonstrate their fierce devotion to the Cause and its champions.)

As a result of this investigative work, Random House began talking about a settlement with Barry’s lawyers, and committed to modifying future editions of her memoir to make it clear that the name “Barry” is a pseudonym – which, as the excerpt from Breitbart News above points out, is a courtesy extended to several other people Dunham writes about, but not her alleged college rapist.

...Was the media grateful to Breitbart News for doing the job they couldn’t be bothered to do? What do you think? As with every other feminist fairy tale, angry supporters doubled down after the debunking, calling Nolte a “hound of hell,” “creepy” (while he was sitting right there on the same stage!) and, as Emily Shire at the Daily Beast put it, a “rape troll.” The second-funniest part of Shire’s hyperventilating rant is when she gives Nolte grief for repeatedly noting that Dunham repeated went out of her way to identify her accused rapist as a college Republican. ROLLING STONE RAPE STORY IN TATTERS

As investigation into Rolling Stone’s sensational story about an alleged gang rape at the University of Virginia continues, the story unravels further. The Washington Post has interviewed the three friends who saw the alleged victim, Jackie, after the alleged assault. They say that their interactions with her were completely different from the utterly implausible callousness described by Sabrina Erdely, Rolling Stone’s reporter.

Most damning is the fact that what Jackie told them about what happened to her was totally different from what Erdely reported. No fraternity was mentioned. Jackie told her friends she was going on a dinner date with an upperclassman that night, but it seems clear that the person she described was an imaginary friend, complete with photographs of someone she barely knew in high school, taken apparently from a social media site. It turned out, too, that the name that Jackie gave for the person with whom she had a date on the night of the alleged rape was not the name of anyone who has ever attended the University of Virginia. Subsequently, she gave a different name for the person with whom she had the alleged date....

Consider the almost comically inept, and entirely unethical, reporting of Rolling Stone in the matter of the gang-rape allegation at the University of Virginia: the university’s ham-fisted overreaction in suspending all fraternities and sororities; the enraged protests; the subsequent media firestorms and sociological navel-gazing; and — most important — the fact that all of the preceding was based on a fiction that nobody bothered to try to verify. Taken together, that constitutes an excellent argument for something we already know: that there is only one public institution well suited to dealing with rape and other crimes, and it is the criminal-justice system.

The odd and lamentable encroachment of deans of students and other university administrators into a field that is properly the responsibility of police and prosecutors is a worst-of-both-worlds outcome...

A new video, uncovered by GotNews founder and conservative activist Charles Johnson, depicts the author of the debunked Rolling Stone University of Virginia rape story saying that she “absolutely” shops around for stories that fit the narratives she wants to tell. ...“Yes, I absolutely do. In fact, I’m working on one right now where that’s the case,” Erdley replied. “That’s something I’ve done a lot when I’ve written for women’s magazines, where I’ve written a lot about women’s health and women’s rights.”

She gave the example of how she once wanted to write about domestic violence, but was looking for the perfect victim to share their story.

“It’s very hard when you find a topic, and then you want to find the story,” she continued. “Because then you want to find the right story.” She explained how she sometimes has to hold pre-interviews and “tryouts” to find the right victim....

After reading this article in the WaPo, we can safely say that it now appears likely that UVA’s Jackie didn’t just lie about whether she was raped at a fraternity. She appears to have lied about almost everything connected with whatever did or did not happen during some sort of incident that may or may not have occurred, and about the immediate aftermath.

Other than that, a very believable narrator.

Or maybe it was reporter Erdely who is responsible for some of the lies. At this point, we can be forgiven if we have trouble sorting it out....

There’s more, lots more, but you get the idea. It’s becoming more and more apparent that Jackie is most likely a fabulist, perhaps with some pre-existing mental/emotional problems, that it’s time for Erdely and the editors at Rolling Stone to choose another profession. However, I wonder whether there will be any repercussions for any of this.

Lena Dunham and BuzzFeed team up to present another ‘steaming load of faux victim bullcrap’

Lena Dunham has found ways to disgust lots of people over the course of her career. Particularly unsettling were graphic passages in her memoir, “Not That Kind of Girl,” that suggested that “being a weird 7-year-old” meant “acting like a sexual predator” toward her younger sister; i.e., molestation. (Just a joke, she claimed later.)

As Twitchy noted, book reviewers managed to overlook those passages completely while becoming engrossed with the fuzzy recounting of a rape by “a prominent college Republican.” Time declared, Dunham’s “story of rape is a must-read.” The Huffington Post huffed that Dunham “opens up about being a rape survivor.” The Los Angeles Times’ piece? “What you can learn from Lena Dunham’s rape disclosure.”

What Random House learned is that lawsuits tend to follow false claims of rape, and the publisher has offered to pay legal fees so far incurred by Dunham’s “rapist” to fend off a court battle.

Who will come to Dunham’s rescue at this point? She’s defending herself, with extensive assistance from BuzzFeed, which on Tuesday night gave her the opportunity to share “the ways I’ve been attacked for sharing my story” — with “story” being the operative word. “Reporters have attempted to uncover the identity of my attacker despite my sincerest attempts to protect this information,” she writes. Sincerely, what attempts?
