She has known Mr. Lauren for a while: She presented him with the James Smithson Bicentennial Medal last June for his $13 million donation to help restore the Betsy Ross flag

An average Ralph Lauren Women’s Collection pantsuit, which this was — not, in other words, a style from the more accessible line, Lauren Ralph Lauren — is a few thousand dollars (a pinstriped wool jacket alone, for example, is $2,450 at the online store). That is out of reach for most voters.

Clinton Foundation donors got weapons deals from Hillary’s State Department

Under Clinton’s leadership, the State Department approved $165 billion worth of commercial arms sales to 20 nations whose governments have given money to the Clinton Foundation, according to an IBTimes analysis of State Department and foundation data.

...The Clinton-led State Department also authorized $151 billion of separate Pentagon-brokered deals for 16 of the countries that donated to the Clinton Foundation, resulting in a 143 percent increase in completed sales to those nations over the same time frame during the Bush administration. These extra sales were part of a broad increase in American military exports that accompanied Obama’s arrival in the White House.

Sachs: People in Charity Work Unhappy With Clinton's Schmoozing For Years

Friday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” in a discussion about the book “Clinton Cash,” left-leaning economics professors Jeffrey Sachs said, “There is a lot of money sloshing around, and everything is blurred, and it’s not good.”

Sachs said, “There is a lot here that is real, whether it’s quid pro quos or not, who knows. But the amount of schmoozing involved and crossing lines and one person putting money in a foundation, and then Clinton getting unbelievable amounts for his speeches, and then contracts going one way or another. It’s not good. Those blurry lines have been seen by many people.”

“People that work this places like Haiti, for example, saw that this massive machine of State Department, Clinton Foundation, private businesses with money flowing in every every direction,” Sachs said. “Clinton getting awards with massive price tags that he charges, contracts going to the businesses that were giving the awards. Nobody liked it. Nobody liked it and people saw it for years.”

New Book, ‘Clinton Cash,’ Questions Foreign Donations to Foundation

◼ The book does not hit shelves until May 5, but already the Republican Rand Paul has called its findings “big news” that will “shock people” and make voters “question” the candidacy of Hillary Rodham Clinton. - New York Times

“Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich,” by Peter Schweizer — a 186-page investigation of donations made to the Clinton Foundation by foreign entities — is proving the most anticipated and feared book of a presidential cycle still in its infancy.

The book, a copy of which was obtained by The New York Times, asserts that foreign entities who made payments to the Clinton Foundation and to Mr. Clinton through high speaking fees received favors from Mrs. Clinton’s State Department in return.

“We will see a pattern of financial transactions involving the Clintons that occurred contemporaneous with favorable U.S. policy decisions benefiting those providing the funds,” Mr. Schweizer writes.

There is a robust market for books critical of the Clintons. The thinly sourced “Blood Feud,” by Mr. Klein, at one point overtook Mrs. Clinton’s memoir “Hard Choices” on the best-seller list.

But whether Mr. Schweizer’s book can deliver the same sales is not clear. He writes mainly in the voice of a neutral journalist and meticulously documents his sources, including tax records and government documents, while leaving little doubt about his view of the Clintons.

Clinton 'Family foundation accepted millions of dollars in donations from Middle Eastern countries known for violence against women and for denying them many basic freedoms'...

◼ Hillary Clinton Faces Test of Record as Women’s Advocate - AMY CHOZICK/New York Times via DRUDGE

It was supposed to be a carefully planned anniversary to mark one of the most important and widely praised moments in Hillary Rodham Clinton’s political career — and to remind the country, ahead of a likely 2016 presidential campaign, about her long record as a champion for the rights of women and girls.

Instead, as Mrs. Clinton commemorates her 1995 women’s rights speech in Beijing in back-to-back events in New York, she finds herself under attack for her family foundation’s acceptance of millions of dollars in donations from Middle Eastern countries known for violence against women and for denying them many basic freedoms.

This was not how she intended to reintroduce herself to American voters.

Mrs. Clinton’s glide path to a likely April announcement that she will seek the presidency was built around women’s issues. Advancing women has been her central life’s work, as she and her admirers say proudly; she made it a priority as secretary of state and focused on it as a philanthropist. But that focus also allowed Mrs. Clinton, who played down her gender in 2008, to frame her second attempt at the White House in what could be one way to make it special and new: as a shot at history for her and for all women.

And for someone who has so long been lampooned, and demonized on the right, as overly calculating, playing up her gender as a strength would also allow her to demonstrate her nurturing, maternal — and newly grandmotherly — side to voters whom she may have left cold in the past.

Even her most strident critics could not have predicted that Mrs. Clinton would prove vulnerable on the subject.

But the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation has accepted tens of millions of dollars in donations from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Algeria and Brunei — all of which the State Department has faulted over their records on sex discrimination and other human-rights issues.

Costco brass — miffed at Democrats over a liquor-fee dispute — have essentially switched sides, backing the Republican Party’s efforts to maintain and expand its majority coalition

◼ After being stiff-armed by Democrats on a liquor-tax dispute, Costco execs have shifted their loyalties to Republicans in this year’s state Senate races. - Seattle Times

Employees and executives of the Issaquah-based retailer have donated more than $48,000 to Republicans and $17,000 to Democrats so far this year in state contests, according to filings with the state Public Disclosure Commission (PDC).

That’s a notable turnabout from recent elections. In 2012, Costco employees and executives gave $93,000 to Democrats and $21,000 to Republicans in state races. In 2010, $37,000 went to Democrats and just $750 to Republicans.

“Kinda conspicuous, isn’t it?” said Sinegal, the former Costco CEO and current board member, who acknowledged the liquor fight in Olympia was at the heart of the shift in donations.

From the comments: kmw - Tell me again why you think it wrong or unusual to donate to a group that supports your business position as opposed to a group that is in opposition to your business position? It is not all pie in the sky, blind loyalty to a party symbol. At some point in time practical reality kicks in.

DNC still struggling to pay off debt, The Republican National Committee, meanwhile, outraised the DNC more than two-to-one in July, $5.9 million to $3.9 million. The RNC has $12.3 million in cash and no debt.

In July, the DNC actually saw its debt rise from $18.3 million to $18.5 million, even as its cash on hand declined from $5.7 million to $4.1 million. The committee raised $3.9 million, but spent significantly more than that — $5.4 million.

◼ RNC Statement on FEC Filing - GOP.com

WASHINGTON – Today, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus announced the RNC raised $5.9 million in July 2013. The committee’s cash on hand totals $12.3 million.

The continued support from donors at all levels has enabled the RNC to launch an unprecedented community-based field operation. The RNC already has more staff on the ground than in headquarters, which is unheard of in an off-year. Meanwhile, the RNC is developing an entirely new data and digital operation, under the leadership of Chief Technology Officer Andy Barkett and Chief Digital Officer Chuck DeFeo, which will empower candidates and activists at all levels.

“As we saw at our Summer Meeting in Boston, there’s great energy in the Republican Party, and we stand united behind the cause of building a permanent, nationwide campaign,” said Chairman Priebus. “With the support of our donors and investors, we’re making it happen.
“By making these investments now, we will ensure our party is more competitive than ever in 2014, 2016 and beyond. I’m proud of the work we’re doing on the ground and in communities. And I’m confident that we’ll be able to leapfrog the Democrats in our data capabilities.”

Fast facts:
Total raised in July 2013: $5.9 million
Total cash on hand: $12.3 million
Percentage of donors who gave less than $200: 98 percent
Average donation: $51
