Cuomo Concedes Defeat in the Common Core Wars

A safe Democratic governor joins the conservative education wars. - Bloomberg

What a dizzying downward spiral it's been for Common Core. Just a few years ago, it was the joint product of agreements by 48 governors (minus only Rick Perry and Sarah Palin), an attempt to ameliorate the negative impacts of No Child Left Behind. (Cuomo was not elected until 2010, after the initial agreements.) Then conservatives rose in opposition – and for a while, progressives laughed at foolhardy lawmakers warning that these new standards would induct children into homosexuality. Later, as Tim Murphy has documented, suburbanites (in New York especially) started raging about the new testing that reflected poorly on their kids, and labor unions worried about the shuttering of underperforming schools.

That's how we ended up with this ad, from a center-left Democrat with heavy labor backing, promising voters that he will slow-walk the education standards that Glenn Beck had warned about first.

The Right Scoop: The headlines rang out Friday night that Governor Rick Perry was indicted in Texas for coercion and abuse of power. But not all is at it seems.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is indicted, accused of abusing his power - LA Times
...Travis County Dist. Atty. Rosemary Lehmberg was arrested last year on drunken-driving charges. She turned belligerent after police stopped her, and a videotape of her aggressive behavior in custody was widely circulated in the Texas media.

Perry threatened to veto $7.5 million in funding for the public corruption unit in Lehmberg’s office unless she stepped down, saying he could not support continued funding “for an office with statewide jurisdiction at a time when the person charged with ultimate responsibility for that unit has lost the public’s confidence."

Lehmberg served a jail sentence of about three weeks but refused to quit, and Perry followed through on his veto threat.

A left-leaning government watchdog group filed a complaint against Perry, which resulted in the appointment of a special prosecutor, who presented his case to the Austin grand jury....

Even before her arrest and conviction, Henson said, “the Travis County District Attorney’s Office was seen by detractors as a tool for liberals to prosecute Republicans.”

Lehmberg, who remains in office, had no immediate comment on the indictment.

From CNN:
Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, was indicted Friday on felony charges of coercion of a public servant and abuse of his official capacity.

The two counts against Perry, a Republican, stem from his threat to veto funding for a public integrity unit run by Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg unless she resigned, the special prosecutor in the case, Michael McCrum, said.
But the reason he was trying to get Lehmberg to resign was because she was arrested for a driving drunk, which should have caused her to leave office herself:

FYI: The charges against Rick Perry were brought forth by "Texans for Public Justice". - Ulsterman

This is a far left group funded in part by George Soros, the Rockefellers, etc. This same group attempted the very same thing against G. W. Bush in 2000. This time though, they were better prepared, even better funded, and apparently, even more motivated to crush Rick Perry. The ultimate goal is not to prevent Rick Perry from running for president, but rather to turn Texas blue and secure every national election from that point on....

"Governor Cuomo's shocking words this past week aren't simply words," O'Keefe said in a statement. "Governor Cuomo and the New York Department of Labor are on a witch hunt, demanding all documents and financials since our founding. ... His goal, of course, is to harass us and limit our effectiveness by tying us up in court. Just like President Obama used the IRS to target and suppress conservatives, Governor Cuomo is using his Department of Labor to do the same exact thing."

Conservative activist O'Keefe claims Cuomo targeting his group - FOX

Conservative activist James O'Keefe is accusing New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration of targeting his group with document requests and a subpoena, claiming the Democratic governor's recent comments critical of conservatives "aren't simply words."

O'Keefe, whose Project Veritas is behind a series of hidden-camera investigations against left-leaning groups and causes, made the claims on the heels of the controversy over a recent Cuomo interview. In it, Cuomo blasted "extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay" and said they "have no place" in New York.

Today is the 41st annual March for Life in Washington DC. God bless all the marchers standing up for precious life & religious liberty!

Not so fast, Andrew Cuomo. We see what you did there. After publicly bashing conservative New Yorkers as “extreme” people who have no place in his state, the intolerant Democratic governor wants to blame the media for his unmistakable contempt for those who oppose abortion, support gun rights and defend traditional marriage. - Michelle Malkin

When he railed against socially conservative Republican candidates in a radio interview last week, Cuomo hyperbolically singled out those he called “right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay” citizens. Sounding unapologetically purge-tastic, the governor said these political opponents “have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.” His bigoted comments provoked a fierce social-media-driven backlash led by devout Catholics and Second Amendment activists in the Empire State. And now, he’s got job-creating, tax-paying conservative business people threatening to leave. Heckuva job, Andy!

...Cuomo also has set himself up for an unforgettable schooling by hundreds of thousands of pro-lifers who are gathering in Washington, D.C., this week for the 41st annual March for Life. “I am guessing that Andrew Cuomo’s remarks are going to be repeated by every speaker on the platform,” Stasia Zoladz Vogel, president of the Buffalo Regional Right to Life Committee, predicted in the Buffalo News before the Wednesday march.

As for Cuomo’s reckless dismissal of what he considers an “extreme” minority, a recent poll of New Yorkers showed that the vast majority “support sensible restrictions on abortions, with 80 percent opposing unlimited abortion through the ninth month of pregnancy and 75 percent opposing changes in current law so that someone other than a doctor can perform an abortion.” Contrary to Cuomo’s distorted view, the 21st-century pro-life movement is a diverse convergence of increasingly young and minority activists, feminist pro-lifers, independents and social conservatives. And contrary to Cuomo’s reckless telling of history, pro-life activism is ingrained in New York history....

Blackmun: Roe was a doctor’s rights case, you know - Ed Morrissey/HotAir

Roe v. Wade is the case that has killed 55 million human lives on the premise that either they’re not really human, alive, or the ethically bankrupt notion that one life isn't as important as another and can be tossed away when inconvenient.

“Gov. Cuomo, I’m going to leave and I’m taking all of my money with me – every single solitary penny,” he added. “And by the way governor, because I work here – there’s a whole bunch of people that work for me and benefit because I do two shows. And I guess maybe some of them will be out of work, governor. I’m sure you’ll take care of them.”

Hannity announced on his radio show today that he’s preparing to leave the highly-taxed liberal mecca of New York, and he’s taking all his money with him. After all, as he pointed out, as a conservative he’s no longer welcome in the state of New York according to Cuomo. So he’s gonna pack up ship and head out... - The Right Scoop

Glenn Beck to New York Gov. Cuomo: Are our tax dollars not welcome here? - Jessica Chasmar/Washington Times

In an open letter, Mercury Radio founder and CEO Glenn Beck is asking New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo if his right-leaning company is still welcome in the state, after the Democrat said Friday that “extreme” conservatives have no place in New York.

Citing a “schism” within the GOP, Mr. Cuomo said, “Their problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves. Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.”

GLENN BECK’S OPEN LETTER TO GOV. CUOMO: ARE WE WELCOME IN NEW YORK? - The Blaze

“We are fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, entrepreneurs, dreamers, visionaries, hard-workers, straight, gay, black, white, believers, non-believers, liberals and conservatives,” he wrote Monday. “More importantly than any one of these labels, we are decent and kind human beings, and upstanding, loyal and patriotic Americans.

“We don’t see things as left and right. We see things as right and wrong,” he continued. “Our organization creates jobs for hundreds of people in your state, and provides news, opinion, entertainment and a helping hand for millions of people across this country. Are our contributions, tax dollars, and genuine goodness as citizens not welcome here? We respectfully request an answer on whether there are two classes of citizens.”

BLUE STATES TURNING ON CONTROVERSIAL 'COMMON CORE' SCHOOL STANDARDS

As controversy intensifies over new the Common Core educational standards, two Democrat-led states are showing signs of distancing themselves from the curriculum that the Obama administration has supported. - Dr. Susan Berry/Breitbart

Though Common Core supporters claim that the new standards will have the same effect in all states as Massachusetts’ standards did for that state’s achievement levels, opponents say that is not likely.

Last year, Sandra Stotsky, who helped reform Massachusetts’ education system in 1993, and who also resigned from the Common Core review committee, wrote at Heritage that the decreased emphasis on literature in the new standards would diminish the proficiency of students:
[Common Core’s] misplaced stress on informational texts reflects the limited expertise of Common Core’s architects and sponsoring organizations in curriculum and in teacher’s training... A diminished emphasis on literature in secondary grades makes it unlikely that American students will study a meaningful range of culturally and historically significant literary works before graduation.
Massachusetts is joining 15 other states that are now reconsidering their participation in Common Core, four of which have stopped implementation of the tests aligned with the new standards or restricted their involvement.

Now the governor seeks to undo what he done did in haste and stupidity - and other gun news

Andy Cuomo Learns an Important Lesson About Guns - Bryan Preston/PJM

“There is no such thing as a seven-bullet magazine,” Mr. Cuomo said at a news conference. “That doesn’t exist. So you really have no practical option.”

So, even under the revision, New Yorkers could own a 10-round magazine…they just couldn’t put 10 rounds into it.

Criminals all over the state will be sure to abide by that.

Colorado Gov. signs gun control bill amid opposition - Red Alert Politics

On Wednesday, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed a bill that strictly curbs gun rights in that state.

Hickenlooper, a Democrat, signed legislation requiring a background check for all gun purchases in Colorado, a bill that requires the gun buyer to pay for that background check, as well as legislation that restricts gun magazine capacity to 15 rounds of ammunition. The new regulations will begin on July 1....

“He just slapped rural Colorado right in the face,” Brophy said about Hickenlooper’s signing of the bill. ”They are overwhelmingly upset about this.”

Besides the obvious Second Amendment issues, many other pro-gun advocates pointed to losses in jobs and business that will occur because of the new legislation. One company, Magpul Industries, which manufactures gun magazines and accessories in Colorado, has already announced that they will be leaving the state in order to re-establish their business elsewhere.

Many sheriffs in the state have come out opposing the legislation, with a few even announcing that they will not enforce it. One sheriff, Terry Maketa of El Paso County, Colo., even went so far as to say that he would destroy any concealed carry records his department held, rather than hand them over.

“[I]f anyone tried to get their hands on it [database of gun owners], I would destroy the database [and] would intervene if government agents started arresting county residents for exercising their constitutional rights,” Maketa said.

The would-be murderers are shaking in their boots

New York Gov. Cuomo signs major gun-control package into law - Erika Johnsen/HotAir

The law-abiding citizens will be effectively disarmed. The would-be murderers are laughing all the way to the nearest gun-free zone. - Le-gal In-sur-rec-tion

From The Daily News editorial cheering the draconian gun control law passed in NY State with no public discussion, no public debate, no normal waiting period, no time for Senators to read it, no likelihood of actually reducing crime, but great likelihood of making criminals of otherwise law abiding citizens who run afoul of its unusual provisions and who are not David Gregory:
No longer would would-be murderers be legally permitted to buy obscene amounts of ammunition, enabling them to squeeze the trigger again, and again, and again, in quick succession.
Oooh, the would-be murderers are shaking in their boots....

The Reality of Bearing Arms - Larry Johnson/No Quarter

The ignorance of the American people with respect to the Second Amendment is startling.

...We will see where the debate goes once Obama and his team unveil their proposals. But I guarantee you one thing–if Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, the Principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School had been properly armed and trained, she would have had a good chance of stopping a crazed soul from slaughtering her and her students. We cannot ban the ability of someone to kill someone else. We can try futile, feckless methods to limit the number of people a crazy person can kill. But ultimately, you can always find a work around in an open society. It is only when you surrender your freedom and civil liberties that you can obtain the illusion of 100% security. And such security is a fantasy that weak minded, cowardly people grasp for desperately when confronted with the reality of evil....
