How Iran used al-Qaeda: @EliLake digs into the latest declassified bin Laden documents https://t.co/S1y77933YW pic.twitter.com/weYTG6kWaQ
— Bloomberg View (@BV) November 3, 2017
...Ryan Trapani, a spokesman for the CIA, told me Thursday: "Documents collected during the bin Laden raid, which have been declassified, indicate Iran and al-Qaeda have an agreement to not target each other. The documents indicate bin Laden referred to Iran as the 'main artery' for al-Qaeda to move funds, personnel and communications."
Some of this was known before. The U.S. government has sanctioned members of al-Qaeda's network in Iran going back to the Obama years. The State Department's annual reports on terrorism also touch on this.
Nonetheless, it's understandable why many observers would dismiss the notion of an Iran-al-Qaeda connection. Earlier releases of the bin Laden files under the Obama administration emphasized the Iran-al-Qaeda rivalry. All the while documents that showed cooperation remained classified....
Current and former Trump administration officials tell me the declassification of the documents was a priority for the new president's team. The former senior director for intelligence at the National Security Council, Ezra Cohen-Watnick, pressed the CIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to declassify the bin Laden documents. He met with resistance because translations, vetting the documents and providing official analysis would sap resources from higher priorities, according to these current and former officials. In the end, the CIA released most of the documents on Wednesday without translations and analysis, in hard-to-download zip files.
In the coming days and weeks, outside analysts and experts will be able to see for themselves the extent of Iran's cooperation with al-Qaeda....

This has been a very revealing week for America.
Here is the truth. As President Obama was campaigning on the imminent death of al-Qaida, those with access to the bin Laden documents were seeing, in Bin Laden’s own words, that the opposite was true....
This has been a very revealing week for America. We now know that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton used her private email from a private server in her personal home to conduct official diplomatic business for four years.
We now know President Obama has obstructed access to the Bin Laden raid materials by intelligence professionals in order to manipulate the political dialogue and messaging.
Now we are facing a potential non-transparent negotiation with a nuclear Iran.
We have little knowledge about why four Americans were abandoned to die in Benghazi.
We ask ourselves, how and why was ISIS allowed to grow and fester like a malignant cancer right under our nose?
These are troubling times in the Republic — but what is more troubling, who will stand up to this absolute lawless tyranny and deception?

PFARRER: AMERICANS SOLD A BOGUS STORY OF BIN LADEN KILL MISSION
Retired SEAL Team commander Chuck Pfarrer, author of SEAL Target Geronimo: The Inside Story of the Mission to Kill Osama bin Laden, told Guns & Patriots that the Obama White House manufactured their own narrative of the SEAL raid that killed bin Laden for the purpose of a quid pro quo with Hollywood.
The 2012 action thriller “Zero Dark Thirty” allegedly tells the story about the May 1, 2011 SEAL raid code-named “Neptune’s Spear” on bin Laden who was hiding in Abottabad, Pakistan, is fictitious, said the former SEAL commander, who spoke to members of the SEAL Team Six, and other principals involved while gathering information on his book. “Look at the movie – it’s preposterous.”

“The republic’s in trouble, we lie about everything, lying has become the staple”
It doesn't take much to fire up Hersh, the investigative journalist who has been the nemesis of US presidents since the 1960s and who was once described by the Republican party as "the closest thing American journalism has to a terrorist".
He is angry about the timidity of journalists in America, their failure to challenge the White House and be an unpopular messenger of truth.
Don't even get him started on the New York Times which, he says, spends "so much more time carrying water for Obama than I ever thought they would" – or the death of Osama bin Laden. "Nothing's been done about that story, it's one big lie, not one word of it is true," he says of the dramatic US Navy Seals raid in 2011.
Hersh is writing a book about national security and has devoted a chapter to the bin Laden killing. He says a recent report put out by an "independent" Pakistani commission about life in the Abottabad compound in which Bin Laden was holed up would not stand up to scrutiny. "The Pakistanis put out a report, don't get me going on it. Let's put it this way, it was done with considerable American input. It's a bullshit report," he says hinting of revelations to come in his book.
The Obama administration lies systematically, he claims, yet none of the leviathans of American media, the TV networks or big print titles, challenge him.
"It's pathetic, they are more than obsequious, they are afraid to pick on this guy [Obama]," he declares in an interview with the Guardian.
"It used to be when you were in a situation when something very dramatic happened, the president and the minions around the president had control of the narrative, you would pretty much know they would do the best they could to tell the story straight. Now that doesn't happen any more. Now they take advantage of something like that and they work out how to re-elect the president.

WHO IS DOKU UMAROV”?
Doku Umarov could be one of the most important — and dangerous — terrorists Americans have never heard of.
The Chechen Islamic radical, who leads a group called the Caucasus Emirate, for years has been one of Russia’s most-wanted men. He and his organization have claimed responsibility for attacks killing dozens of civilians, including the 2010 Moscow subway bombings. Since 2011, the U.S. State Department has offered $5 million for information on his whereabouts.
Though nicknamed Russia’s bin Laden, his name never had the global resonance of Al Qaeda’s founder or its deputies. But in the wake of the Boston Marathon attack, Umarov is receiving worldwide attention.
Whether he or the Caucasus Emirate are in any way connected to the bombing is not known. Sources told Fox News that investigators are looking into possible ties between Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the suspect who died in a shootout early Friday in Boston, and the Caucasus Emirate.
A U.S. official said Tuesday that the “working theory” is they were motivated by radical Islam but acted alone. Still, officials have not determined what the older brother was doing during a mysterious six-month trip to Russia last year.
Though Umarov is not as well known in the U.S. as some other wanted terrorists, he is in the top tier. The 2011 world’s most-wanted list, put out by Forbes, listed him along with the likes of Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri and brutal Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony....
According to a 2011 report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Umarov has since 2007 declared “jihad against anyone fighting against Muslims anywhere across the globe.”
The Caucasus Emirate, the extremist group he leads, was formed in 2007. It grew out of the flagging separatist group the Republic of Ichkeria, which Umarov helped lead in various positions since the first Russian-Chechen war. He climbed the ladder until creating the Caucasus Emirate and declaring himself emir.
Umarov was already wanted in Russia — the country charged him with murder in 1992, and an international arrest warrant was issued in 2000 — before the formation of the CE, but his group’s crimes have since attracted more global attention.
He claimed responsibility for the 2010 Moscow bombing of two subway stations, which killed 40, and the 2011 attack on a Moscow airport which killed nearly as many.

The Man Who Killed Osama bin Laden... Is Screwed
Published in the March 2013 issue - 7 fascinating pages - at the link.
Phil Bronstein is the former editor of the San Francisco Chronicle and currently serves as executive chairman of the Center for Investigative Reporting. This piece was reported in cooperation with CIR.

◼ Esquire article wrongly claims SEAL who killed bin Laden is denied healthcare - Megan McCloskey/Stars and Stripes
The writer, Phil Bronstein, who heads up the Center for Investigative Reporting, stands by the story. He said the assertion that the government gave the SEAL “nothing” in terms of health care is both fair and accurate, because the SEAL didn’t know the VA benefits existed.
“No one ever told him that this is available,” Bronstein said.
He said there wasn’t space in the article to explain that the former SEAL’s lack of healthcare was driven by an ignorance of the benefits to which he is entitled.
“That’s a different story,” Bronstein said in a phone interview with Stars and Stripes about what he omitted from the article.
The Center for Investigating Reporting posted a story on its website today that goes into greater detail about the SEAL's interactions with the VA, including that he has a disability claim that is stuck in the backlog.

WHITE HOUSE MUST STOP SONY FROM RELEASING 'KILLING BIN LADEN' FILM
I'm only saying this because, you know, the White House and the media told me movies inflame and cause terrorism.
Think about it: if the poorly produced and laughably bad trailer for "The Innocence of Muslims" results in chaos, murder, and the burning of foreign outposts all throughout the Middle East, how much rioting and mayhem is a big-budgeted, slickly produced, Oscar-bait blockbuster celebrating the death of the leader of al-Qaeda going to cause?
Moreover, an excuse Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will not be able to use in the case of "Zero Dark Thirty" (as she did with "Innocence of Muslims") is the cowardly and self-righteous claim that the federal government and the Obama White House had nothing to do with "Zero Dark Thirty."
Because the federal government and the Obama White House had everything to do with "Zero Dark Thirty."
As we now know, in an effort to get this glitzy in-kind contribution (tens of millions of dollars) up on the screen in time to affect the election, it was the Obama Administration that gave the filmmakers tons of encouragement and a troubling amount of access to all kinds of classified material....
◼ 'Zero Dark Thirty' Secret emails reveal how Obama backed bin Laden film to help win reelection: White House reminded filmmakers it wanted to 'have visibility' in the film so it could bask in the glory of bin Laden's death - Daniel Bates/Daily Mail
Zero Dark Thirty was originally set for release before the election in November, potentially giving President Obama an unfair boost to his popularity.
But following an outcry the release date was moved back until after the poll, even though trailers have already been released by Sony.
The new documents show discussions taking place before the row erupted and were unearthed after a Freedom of Information request by Judicial Watch, a right wing website.

◼ NEW BOOK: BIN LADEN WAS ALREADY DEAD...
A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him.◼ Contradicts Obama's account
Bin Laden apparently was shot in the head when he looked out of his bedroom door into the top-floor hallway of his compound as SEALs rushed up a narrow stairwell in his direction, according to former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette, writing under the pseudonym Mark Owen in “No Easy Day.” The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)’s Dutton imprint.
◼ FLASHBACK: 'Firefight'
