CONGRESS IS UNEARTHING FACEBOOK’S TERRIBLE POWER



...The problem Zuckerberg faces is running an empire that’s too big for any one entity to control. The largest virtual public square in the world, one that provides a communications tool to 2.2 billion users is overseen by one individual. Zuckerberg created something that is far bigger than himself, and he–along with the rest of us–failed to account for the unintended consequences in advance. We’re concerned about who gets access to our information, yes. But as yesterday’s Senate hearing revealed, we’re also concerned about many other ways Facebook is impacting our lives. We’re worried our children are becoming addicted to it. We’re concerned it’s quantifying and minimizing important relationships, and leaving us less connected. We are horrified by the images and posts that can crop up the platform, and we’re just as appalled by the idea that one private entity could decide what gets taken down. Now we are tasked collectively with figuring out how to steward this platform into the future, and we don’t think Zuckerberg is up to the task....

Zuckerberg to the American people: Says Obama Staffer Lied About Alliance With Facebook






While testifying in front of the Energy and Commerce Committee, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the former Obama campaign staffer who claimed the company allowed the Obama campaign to do things “they wouldn’t have allowed someone else to do because they were on our side” was lying....

Scalise asked:
… One of the lead digital heads of the Obama campaign said recently: “Facebook was surprised we were able to suck out the whole social graph, but they didn't stop us once they realized that was what we were doing. They came to office in the days following election recruiting and were very candid that they allowed us to do things they wouldn't have allowed someone else to do because they were on our side.” Now, that's a direct quote from one of the heads of the Obama digital team. What would she mean by they, Facebook, were on our side?
Zuckerberg responded that Facebook “didn't allow the Obama campaign to do anything that any developer on the platform wouldn't have otherwise been able to do.”

















“...We Vermonters believe in privacy,” Sen. Leahy proudly proclaimed.

Yet, a quick visit to his website, https://www.leahyforvermont.com/​, with the Chrome extension “Facebook Pixel Helper” reveals that Sen. Leahy has a Facebook pixel, invisible to users, that gathers user data of Facebook users who visit the site. (For a quick primer on what “pixels” do, visit Facebook’s resource guide on the data-gathering tool.)

That’s right, if you visit Senator Leahy’s campaign website, it’s likely your data, including your demographics and what pages you looked at on the site, have been placed into a custom data targeting audience by Leahy’s team....

How to download your data from Google, Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat





Facebook's Cambridge Analytica scandal has raised awareness of the data it gathers on its users, and what's done with it.

Of course, Facebook is not alone. All social networks that turn their users' activity into money retain lots of information - some of it posted by those users, others generated by behavior.

And many give you the opportunity to download and view it. As I wrote last week, Facebook has a data-download feature. So do many of the major online services, including Google, Twitter, LinkedIn and Snapchat.

No, you’re not being paranoid. Sites really are watching your every move



..."Collection of page content by third-party replay scripts may cause sensitive information, such as medical conditions, credit card details, and other personal information displayed on a page, to leak to the third-party as part of the recording," Steven Englehardt, a PhD candidate at Princeton University, wrote. "This may expose users to identity theft, online scams, and other unwanted behavior. The same is true for the collection of user inputs during checkout and registration processes."

Englehardt installed replay scripts from six of the most widely used services and found they all exposed visitors' private moments to varying degrees. During the process of creating an account, for instance, the scripts logged at least partial input typed into various fields. Scripts from FullStory, Hotjar, Yandex, and Smartlook were the most intrusive because, by default, they recorded all input typed into fields for names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, addresses, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth....

LGBTQ Advocates Demand That Donald Trump Compiles A Registry Of All Gay Americans



Imagine a scenario in which the Trump administration called for all Americans to register their sexual preferences with the government. Gay, straight, bi, trans, and every other permutation of sexual desire and identity would be compiled and cross-referenced by government officials. Lying or failing to answer the question would be a violation of federal law, subject to fines. The government would know precisely what is going on in your bedroom, and in the bedrooms of your fellow citizens across the nation.

That sounds like a lefty fever dream, a dystopian vision of Trumpian persecution.

Instead, it is the policy some LGBT advocates are clamoring for and were disappointed not to have received last week. Rather than celebrating the protection of their privacy, the National LGBTQ Taskforce released a press statement condemning the administration’s decision to continue the existing policy of minding their own business.

Apple’s Tim Cook Blasts Silicon Valley Firms for Selling Off Privacy



Apple CEO Tim Cook has made some of his strongest comments to date on digital privacy and security.

Speaking remotely on Monday night as he accepted the Washington, D.C.-based Electronic Privacy Information Center’s (EPIC) Freedom Award, Cook criticized other Silicon Valley companies that mine users’ data to target advertising and make money. The comments seemed to be directed at tech giants like Facebook and Google, which are known for monetizing user data....

Cook then discussed encryption and how all levels of law enforcement are trying to get tech companies to provide the “master key” into their products and give them access to consumers’ data.

“We think this is incredibly dangerous,” he said. “If you put a key under the mat for the cops, a burglar can find it too. Criminals are using every technology tool at their disposal to hack into people’s accounts. If they know there’s a key hidden somewhere, they won’t stop until they find it.”

Cook added, “We’ve been offering encryption tools in our products for years, and we’re going to stay on that path. We think it’s a critical feature for our customers who want to keep their data secure.”
