Killing California: $155 Billion a Year in Higher Taxes and Fees Proposed in First Four Months of Legislative Session



This week, the California Tax Foundation released the third edition of Tax Watch: Major Taxes and Fees Introduced in the California Legislature, a report cataloging all legislation introduced since the start of the legislative session in December that proposes a new or increased tax or fee.
The cumulative sum of these proposals is the highest we’ve ever identified. These proposals seek to increase the price of the most basic necessities – housing, health care, child care, groceries and driving a car. From a business perspective, these bills would make it costlier for start-ups, family businesses, neighborhood restaurants and California’s industry icons to keep their doors open.

President’s Message- RNC Special!

RNC Convention - You had to be there to believe it. I had the honor to represent California as an Alternate delegate in Ohio and would not have missed it for the world. I felt the excitement in the hall and we do have excitement by all, to WIN in November. Win we must. If you watched the DNC from Philadelphia they must be living in a different world from the rest of us... I also included into one day, the NFRW Board of Directors meeting, held downtown. Rosie the bus, is coming to California in August and as soon as I get her schedule I will forward to the Division Presidents. Continue to work on the election in any way you can. Remember to include talking about membership. We have 2 months left in this year for per capita reporting and I really do not want to see a decrease in membership. Set a GOAL to at least meet your last years totals. Thanks to you all for your efforts and we will be rewarded in November.

They’re Back!

The Legislature is back in session this week, and they wasted no time passing useless and terrible bills. The legislature has until August 12th to pass bills out of their final fiscal committees, so the Appropriations Committee of both houses is going to be a flurry of activity for the next week. The last day to hear bills on the floor of the Senate and the Assembly and pass them on to Governor Brown is the end of this month, August 31st. At that point, the final recess of the legislative year begins. During summer recess, though, Governor Brown was busy signing our second amendment rights away. Brown signed a series of bills that ban the sale of semi-automatic rifles with quick detach magazines, that ban the possession of high capacity magazines of more than ten rounds, and background checks for ammunition purchases, just to name a few. Of 11 gun control bills sent to Governor Brown, he signed 6 and vetoed 5. The National Rifle Association has already issued a statement to say that these bills will be challenged in court. We will keep you informed of their progress. Stay tuned!

November Ballot Measures

The California Federation of Republican Women will be making recommendations on the November Ballot propositions. There are 17 propositions on the ballot! Currently our Advocate and our Ballot Measures Analysts are busy preparing analysis and recommendations for our Voting Body to take official positions on each measure. Our CFRW Voting Body is made up of the CFRW President, the three CFRW Division Presidents, and the three CFRW Vice Presidents. Once we have our official recommendations, we will post online as well as have in-depth analysis and talking points on each proposition in the Capitol Update. Thank you for being patient, as we want to make sure we take the most informed recommendation we can! With 17 ballot measures, it is imperative the CFRW members understand what they are voting on so that they can, in turn, educate the voters of their communities!

CFRW Club Spotlight! Sacramento Republican Women Federated

This spotlight features the Sacramento Republican Women Federated club. The club’s primary focus over the past year was on increasing membership numbers. Last year’s memberships were carefully examined, and everyone that had not renewed was called and urged to renew. Additionally, each local Republican woman candidate was contacted and invited to join our club.

All local Republican office holders were sent letters and copies of our newsletter. This helped give our club greater exposure and demonstrated that we are a strong, viable organization that is available to assist them in their future endeavors. This was a valuable step in showing them that we are willing to work hard to achieve our goals as Republicans.

Assembly leader, Connie Conway joined our club and is now an associate member. She is a valuable member of the Sacramento community and we look forward to working with her. The club’s satellite entity for business and professional women that was started twelve years ago has also enjoyed an increase in growth. Our current Republican Sacramento County Supervisors, Susan Peters and Roberta MacGlashan, also joined. Roberta now serves as a member of the Sacramento club and Susan joined as an associate member. Janet Gardner is also a member.

We look forward to working together in the New Year with a view toward achieving our important goals and increasing our membership.

California drivers brace for costly new gas tax

◼ Californians already pay the nation's second highest gas tax at 68 cents a gallon -- and now it will go up again in January to pay for a first-in-the-nation climate change law. - FOX

..."I think it’s terrible," added Lupe Sanchez, pumping $4.09-a-gallon gas at a Chevron near Santa Monica. "The economy, the way it is right now with jobs and everything, it's just crazy."

When gas prices go up, motorists typically blame oil companies, Arab sheiks and Wall Street speculators. This time they can blame Sacramento and former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for passing a bill requiring California to reduce carbon emissions to 1990 levels by 2020.

The tax on carbon already raised about $1 billion in revenue by requiring manufacturers and utilities to buy credits for each ton of carbon emitted into the atmosphere. At the beginning of next year, the law will also apply to oil and gas. Refiners and distributors say they will pass another $2 billion in costs on - largely to consumers....

Sacramento Mom SUSPENDED FOR TWO WEEKS for criticizing Common Core


◼ This Could Be One of the Biggest Common Core Stories Yet — and It Involves a Mom Being Suspended From Her Child’s School - The Blaze

The two week suspension was reportedly triggered after the officials charged that Katherine Duran was “disrupting the school.” When asked to clarify what Duran’s disruption was, Gabe Ross, a spokesperson for the school district, told the media, “It appears (she) went a little too far with regards to how she distributed information at school sites, distributing information to children directly.”

But according to Duran, she never distributed information to students on school grounds or to the children directly. The school district has even acknowledged that Ross’s statement was incorrect. See, Duran did not distribute the opt-out forms, her son did. And for that, she has been suspended.

Officials at a California grade school have suspended the mother of a 12-year-old boy over her – and his – criticism of the Common Core Standards Initiative.

The mother is Katherine Duran, reports local ABC affiliate KXTV. Her 12-year-old son, Christopher Duran, attends Mark Twain Elementary School in Sacramento.

A police officer delivered a form labeled “withdrawal of consent” to the Duran home, legally banning Katherine Duran from the premises of Mark Twain Elementary for 14 days.

What was the mother’s crime? Well, school administrators and Sacramento school district officials have had tremendous difficulty getting their story straight on that one.

Parents fighting for kids; SEIU fighting for more money

On the South steps of the Capitol, the CPS audit rally was made up of parents and families who are victims of overly aggressive Child Protective Services divisions.

On the West steps of the Capitol, the SEIU rally was made up of thousands of purple t-shirt-wearing SEIU members demanding raises. Their t-shirts were made up for today’s rally and said “2013 CONTRACT TOUR.” The back of the t-shirt said “YOUR CONTRACT STARTS WITH YOU,” and listed the cities for the SEIU “Townhall Circuit” for 2013 contract negotiations.

Yet what should have overshadowed the small gathering of emotional parents, did not. Although, the contrast was stark.

It was mothers and fathers who said their children had been stolen from them by Child Protective Services, versus well-compensated state employees balking at Gov. Jerry Brown telling SEIU and other labor unions currently embroiled in bargaining talks, that new labor contracts need to be “cost-neutral.”
