President Obama’s hometown of Chicago has been controlled by his political party since at least 1931. For most of us, the Windy City is a cautionary tale of what America could look like if Barack Obama and his cronies (and their political philosophy) were allowed to reign unopposed and unchecked.



Fortunately, America is a lot a bigger than Chicago, but we’ve already seen the effects of seven years of Chicago-style politics emanating from the White House. That can be stopped this November, but only if freedom-loving Americans make their voices heard at the polls.

IRS Warns Of Slower Tax Refunds, More Identity Theft Risk

That’s the word in an alarming email obtained by ABC News and sent to IRS employees today by IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.

The only possible silver lining (especially for tax cheats): fewer audits. To be specific: 46,000 fewer audits this year and 1,800 fewer IRS enforcement officers.

USA Today Media Columnist: 'MSNBC Loses Election'


◼ USA Today media columnist Michael Wolff let MSNBC have it with both barrels in a column headlined "MSNBC Loses Election." Wolff asked “Is a vote against a political party also a vote against the network that supports it?” - Newsbusters

He suggested the sinking fortunes of the Democrats “have been pretty accurately charted in the declining ratings at MSNBC,” which unsurprisingly fell 22 percent from their 2010 midterm ratings in the important demographic of 25-to-54. (It couldn’t have helped for Joy Reid to announce in the afternoon that she couldn’t imagine what the good news would be.) This is the main thought:
MSNBC's problem is almost exactly the same as the Democrats' problem: It built its future around a vivid and dramatic hero who, unfortunately, turned out to be both opaque and conflict averse. MSNBC now has a lineup of ever-righteous and often sulky defenders of President Barack Obama, who seem, not just to conservatives but to many liberals, too, bizarrely tone deaf and lost in time.

California Voters Sour on Obama in Latest Poll

According to the latest poll released Tuesday by Field Poll, only 45 percent of voters approve of Obama's job performance. This is the first time that fewer than half of California voters are happy with Obama's performance as president this year. Tuesday's results also show that Obama's approval ratings have slipped since June.

Mark DiCamillo, the head pollster at Field Report, said the trends are particularly ominous because the decline in numbers come from Obama's own supporters.

He’s had slightly lower disapproval numbers, hitting 56 percent earlier this year, but his approval’s never been below 38 percent in Gallup. He sunk that low twice in August 2011, during the dog days of the first debt-ceiling standoff, but never dipped below it.

Think about that. Despite the many lowlights of his second term, from the Healthcare.gov rollout to the NSA scandal to the IRS fiasco to this summer’s comprehensive foreign-policy mess, he’s never been lower than he is right now. Is tomorrow the day he breaks new ground?

The silver lining for Democrats, if there is one, is that his approval’s not in freefall. He’s been stuck just a few points above today’s numbers for most of the summer and yet Democratic Senate incumbents remain competitive in all battleground states. The dark cloud that holds that silver lining is that this ◼ isn’t the (only) poll lately showing O nosing south. Ten days ago, Reuters also had him at 38/54, identical to today’s Gallup figure. The new YouGov poll has him at 41/56. (Rasmussen, by contrast, has him at a robust 47/51.) If he settles in at, say, 38/55 for the rest of the midterm campaign, Democrats can wave bye-bye to Mark Pryor, Kay Hagan, Mary Landrieu, Mark Begich, and probably some purple-staters like Mark Udall too. See now why Debbie Wasserman-Schultz has taken to using ◼ domestic-violence metaphors to attack big-name Republicans? When the head of the party is lurching towards sub-40 percent approval, it’s most definitely kitchen-sink time.

The Ebola of Journalism: Liberalism is Killing Time and CNN

Call it the Ebola of Journalism. And its spreading -- to Time and CNN.

...In a phrase? Why is this happening to Time and CNN? To borrow from ex-Bill Clinton strategist James Carville’s telling description of the central issue of the 1992 election? It’s the liberalism, stupid....

Time and CNN became all about the liberalism, not journalism. Liberals didn’t like Lou Dobbs? Then make his life at CNN difficult until he leaves. Liberals on the march in Ferguson? Put it on the cover of Time with a liberal slant. Obama? Put him on over a full one-quarter of Time’s 52 covers for 2008. Now, as with Newsweek, the results of decades of this liberal tilt are in. Time has been spun off with its staff laid off by the hundreds, and CNN is about to face massive layoffs, its ratings in the basement. But no matter -- the liberalism will still reign supreme.

What is remarkable here is the obsession with liberalism even if it comes down to a question of survival. Given a choice of going the straight fair-and-balanced route that has made Fox News the place-to-go for news and opinion, the response is journalistic suicide.

So now here come the layoffs at CNN. Will CNN change direction? Of course not. Neither will Time. Their financial, circulation and ratings life blood draining away, CNN is still as scornful of Fox as Time editors are doubtless proud of all those fawning Obama covers. Newsweek died even as its editors still glowed with pride about putting Sarah Palin on the cover in running shorts and snickering "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Sarah? She’s Bad News For The GOP - And For Everybody Else Too."

Time and CNN are dying. And unless they change, they will die. Why? Because in effect, liberalism is proving to be the Ebola of Journalism, its deathly effect spreading from Newsweek to Time to CNN -- and doubtless beyond.

One Size Fits All: The War on Excellence in Public Education

An interesting perspective on Common Core. An apparent side effect of common core is to marginalize the most talented students. That has been the trend for years in K-12 education - example: forcing hours of mandatory daily homework on students even if they've already mastered the material, then grading them as much on whether or not they've done their homework as on whether or not they know the material.

◼ One size does not fit all in public education. Teaching geared to the average or slowest students in the class harms the brightest, severely limiting their achievement. The best hope to restore America’s former level of academic excellence must be to adopt the techniques provided in the programs offered by the charter and home schools, the specialized high schools like those in New York City and Catholic schools that have made them so successful. - California Policy Center

Most importantly, there must be no mistake about the motivation behind the war on excellence. It is pure unadulterated envy. With Common Core, the president’s signature education program, it is envy writ large. It is part of Obama’s efforts to debase American excellence that, sadly, appear to be bearing fruit.

War demands an appropriate response. It is essential to understand the psychology of Common Core and to mount an effective response. With the vast amount of funding available to public schools, more must be demanded.

There was a time when excellence was the gold standard. Those days must be restored for our country’s children to have any hope for a bright future. To do that, however, we must first win the war.

Brutal Polls: Americans are Fed Up, Demoralized, and Anticipate Decline

◼ The new NBC/WSJ survey, which tracks President Obama's approval to an all-time low in the series (40/54) and shows a slight Republican edge heading into November's elections, is bursting at the seams with negativity:

(1) Right track/Wrong track is at an abysmal (22/71).

(2) By a 22-point margin, Americans say the country is in a state of decline. On the question of whether people believe that "life for our children's generation will be than it has been for us," respondents said they are "not confident" on that score by nearly a four-to-one margin.

◼ A fresh Associated Press poll is just as bleak on virtually every count. Obama's approval is upside down (40/59) overall, and underwater on every single issue polled. He's in the 30's on many of them. His best number is on handling relationships with other countries, at (43/55). Voters split evenly between preferring Republicans or Democrats to control Congress after the elections. Fully one-third of respondents said it doesn't matter either way. Republicans held a "trust" edge on seven of the eight specific issues polled. Noah Rothman's conclusion upon surveying these numbers: "These are awful numbers for incumbent Democrats heading into the fall. And we haven’t even started applying likely voter screens yet."

America is in the grips of a crisis of confidence, and most people don't see a light at the end of the tunnel at the moment.

In recent years Americans have been feeling less satisfied with their amount of freedom. In fact, Gallup recently released a poll that reveals this trend.

The poll shows that 79 percent of Americans are satisfied with their freedom to choose what to do with their lives—down from 91 percent in 2006. At the same time, Americans’ dissatisfaction with the freedom to choose what to do with their lives rose from 9 percent to 21 percent.

Sadly, the U.S. wasn’t even close to being in the top 10 countries with the highest level of satisfaction with their amount of freedom. It came in 36th. But it tied with Spain (9th) on the list of countries with the greatest level of decline in satisfaction with freedom. Other notable countries include Egypt (34 percent decline), Greece (30 percent), and Pakistan (13 percent).The U.S. isn’t in good company here.

No society has ever been economically sluggish and remained at the forefront of technological innovation....

...I, like many others, have been bemused by the seeming paralysis and incompetence of the federal government in recent years. This is not a reference specifically to the Obama administration. Instead, I think we are witnessing an advanced stage of the systemic sclerosis that Mancur Olson described in The Rise and Decline of Nations: Economic Growth, Stagflation, and Social Rigidities (1982). The options open to a sclerotic government are tightly limited by the special interests that have grown up within and around it. Sclerotic bureaucracies seek primarily to serve themselves, not the missions they are assigned. And even when a sclerotic government realizes that it is in peril, it is neither agile nor responsive, and is often unable even to prevent itself from doing harm to its own long-term interests.

To put my working hypothesis in terms of Silicon Valley, it seems quite possible to me that the modern American state will effectively cripple the information-technology industry’s innovativeness, oblivious to its dependence on that innovativeness. The same obliviousness will characterize the federal government’s policies toward other centers of American innovation. Whether I am right depends on how far sclerosis in the American government has progressed. My own assessment is that the sclerosis is close to terminal. But that’s a topic for another day.

Progressive activists still talk as if we can afford any level of social service expenditures if we raise taxes on the rich, but workers can’t be created by raising taxes. Everything that the left has done, from breaking up the family to driving out manufacturing industries to promoting Third World immigration has made its own social welfare spending completely unsustainable.

Liberals and libertarians both act as if the crisis facing us can be fixed if we take more from the “wealthy elderly” or give them less. The crisis is born of demographics. It can’t be fixed by targeting the elderly because they haven’t been the problem in some time....

The welfare state has been spending more money with an unsustainable demographic imbalance. There are fewer working families supporting more elderly, immigrants and broken families. The Russians invest money into increasing the native birth rate. Instead we fund Planned Parenthood because liberal economic eugenics dictates that we should extract “full value” from working women as a tax base to subsidize the welfare state while discarding the next generation.

The “modern” system that we have adopted with its low birth rates, high social spending and retirement benefits is at odds with itself. We can have low birth rates, deficit spending or Social Security; but there is no possible way that we can have all three.

And yet we have all three.

...After a century of misery, the left still hasn’t learned that there is no substitute for the middle class. It’s not just running out of money, it’s running out of people.

The welfare state has no future. It is only a question of what terms it will implode on and what will happen to the social welfare political infrastructure when it does. The violence in Venezuela and the slow death of Detroit give us insights into the coming collapse of the welfare state.
