Election 2016: Meet the GOP's outsider candidates



Mainstream media already have a few favorites among the Republican Party's rapidly growing list of long-shot 2016 presidential candidates.

With the recent entries of Carly Fiorina, Ben Carson, and Mike Huckabee into the race, the Republicans now have multiple declared candidates who score single-digit percentages in RealClearPolitics' average of polls. Other one-digit players expected to enter the race include New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Sen. Rick Santorum, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Sen. Lindsey Graham, and others.

But being an unlikely 2016 choice doesn't necessarily mean the press won't be interested in your campaign. A few unlikely GOP hopefuls boast of an impressive amount of media attention.

◼ The survey conducted for Bloomberg Politics and the Des Moines Register showed Walker at 15 percent among Republican caucus-goers, Paul at 14 percent, and Mike Huckabee, the 2008 victor in Iowa, at 10 percent. - Politico

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson was the first choice of 9 percent of respondents.

Other big-name contenders fared poorly: Bush was the first choice of just 8 percent of Republican voters, while Cruz registered at 5 percent and Christie at 4 percent. Rick Santorum, who narrowly won the caucuses in 2012, notched 4 percent, and Marco Rubio and Rick Perry each garnered 3 percent.

Mitt Romney, who announced the day after the poll ended that he wouldn’t run again in 2016, was the top choice of 13 percent of respondents....

The poll, conducted a year out from the caucuses, shows that two establishment-favored favorites, Bush and Christie, have their work cut out to win over Republicans in the first-in-the-nation voting state. Bush’s ratings were just above water, with 46 percent of respondents saying they view him favorably and 43 percent unfavorably. But the former Florida governor’s unfavorable numbers have risen by 15 percentage points since the last Bloomberg-Register poll in October.

Christie’s unfavorability rating is even worse at 54 percent, up 9 percentage points from October. The New Jersey governor gets positive marks from just over one-in-three caucus voters.

Walker, meanwhile, has catapulted to the head of the field, with a commanding 60 percent of respondents giving him positive marks (up from 49 percent in October) and 12 percent offering a negative take (essentially unchanged from three months ago). The Wisconsin governor, one of the few contenders whose appeal spans the establishment and social conservative wings of the party, gave a well-received speech to Iowa conservatives last weekend.... “I made it very clear: ‘I’ll do everything that I can to vigorously support Mitt Romney because I think our country is at stake, and I believe his leadership would provide the right direction as opposed to what we’ve had four years, which is the wrong direction,” the former Arkansas governor declared in an exclusive interview this morning.

“I don’t think anyone doubted that I was going to support the Republican. But Mitt Romney has now earned it — and I use that term very specifically,” said Huckabee. “He has earned the nomination. He worked hard to get it and therefore I think all Republicans and all conservatives need to rally around Gov. Romney.”

◼ Huckabee Opts Against 2012 White House Bid
Mike Huckabee said Saturday there would be no sequel to his surprisingly strong 2008 White House bid, in which he won the Iowa Republican caucus and finished second in the primaries to Sen. John McCain.

"All the factors say go, but my heart says no," Huckabee, who was considered the GOP frontrunner in several national polls, said on his Fox News Channel show.

"The past few months have been times of deep personal reflection," Huckabee said. "Even though I wasn't actively establishing a campaign organization or seeking financial support to run again, polls have consistently put me at or near the top to be the Republican nominee."

...Donald Trump delivered a message after Huckabee's decision to opt out.
"A lot of people are very happy that he will not be running, especially other candidates, so Mike enjoy the show," Trump said. "The ratings are terrific. Good luck."
