California Democrats Divided Over Senate Nominee

California Attorney General Kamala Harris has already announced her plans to run to replace retiring Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer. But she's not the only California Democrat eyeing up the open Senate seat.... Kamala Harris thought she had secured her position as the frontrunner for the Democratic Senate nomination.... But stiff competition from Rep. Loretta Sanchez could change that

More Than 21 Hours Later, Ted Cruz Has Been Cut Off

The Texas Republican rose in opposition to Obamacare Tuesday afternoon. He spoke for almost a full day. Here's what happened. - Matt Berman, Matt Vasilogambros and Dustin Volz/National Journal

By Wednesday morning, Cruz and some of his colleagues were still standing. He was cut off by a new day of Senate business at noon by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

It was not a filibuster. But it was a very, very long speech from the Texas senator who has been the center of attention in D.C.'s budget fight, and the Senate leader in a doomed-to-fail movement to strip funding for Obamacare out of any resolution that Congress passes to fund the government. If Congress fails to come to an agreement, the government will shutdown at the end of September.

Ted Cruz stood up to "make D.C. listen," he said repeatedly. "Washington depends on the American people not paying attention."

But what we heard during the duration of Sen. Cruz's speech was his view of how to be successful in modern American politics. And, in the reactions to his speech from members of his own party, we may get a sense of just how successful the ambitious senator can be.

Results are in: Vidak wins in Senate race

link - Katy Grimes/Cal WatchDog

As of 6:00 a.m., Republican Andy Vidak was leading Democratic challenger Leticia Perez, by more than 6,000 votes for the empty seat in the Senate District 16 runoff race....

Vidak, a 47-year old, third-generation Republican farmer from Hanford, seemed to win 51.9 percent of the vote in the special election in May over Bakersfield Democrat Leticia Perez for the Senate seat vacated by former Sen. Michael Rubio, D-Bakersfield.
Vidak needed 50 percent-plus-one votes to avoid a runoff against Perez.

But a large number of provisional ballots magically appeared after Perez had already conceded the election causing Vidak to lose his 51 percent edge, and a runoff election was scheduled for July 23.

July runoff

“With 100% of precincts reporting, the Hanford-area grower holds a nearly 6,000 vote lead over Kern County Supervisor Leticia Perez in the contentious 16th State Senate race,” 23 ABC News in Bakersfield just reported.

The California Secretary of State is reporting Vidak has 54 percent of the vote, with a total of 39,085 votes. Perez has 46 percent of the vote, with a total of 33,252 votes.

Kern County and Fresno County were where the majority of the provisional ballots appeared in the special election. In yesterday’s election, Kern County reported 48.1 percent for Vidak, and 58.9 percent for Perez. Fresno reported 45.9 percent for Vidak to 54.1 percent for Perez. However, Vidak (took) Kings and Tulare Counties with large margins.

If it’s not close, they can’t cheat.

Left-Wing Noam Chomsky: Obama’s Inexplicable ‘Attack’ On Civil Liberties ‘Goes Well Beyond Anything’ Imagined

In an interview with AlterNet this past week, America’s most well-known left-wing intellectual slammed President Obama for his inexplicable “attacks” on civil liberties in the forms of various laws expanding upon the executive powers set forth by President George W. Bush. - Mediaite

Speaking with the liberal blog’s Mike Stivers, Chomsky expressed dissatisfaction with the current president’s record on civil liberties: “I personally never expected anything of Obama, and wrote about it before the 2008 primaries. I thought it was smoke and mirrors. The one thing that did surprise me is his attack on civil liberties. They go well beyond anything I would have anticipated, and they don’t seem easy to explain.”

Feinstein noted that she has debated in the past – John van de Kamp and Pete Wilson when she ran for governor in 1990, and Tom Campbell and Gray Davis in two of her Senate races.

FOX NEWS just released: Virtual debate- FEINSTEIN vs Elizabeth Emken

Republican Senate hopeful releases virtual debate on YouTube - FOX

A California Republican hopeful has taken a Hollywood approach to force a 41-year Democratic politician into a debate.

Using special effects, Elizabeth Emken released a YouTube video in which she debates a virtual version of Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

In the video Emken asks questions to the silent virtual version of Feinstein.
Emken instructs then instructs viewers to call Feinstein's office "if you want to see a real debate."

Feinstein, who has repeatedly denied Emken's requests for a debate, walked away from an interview with ABC7 when the reporter asked if it would be better for voters to hear both sides...

The closest @ElizabethEmken has come to getting @SenFeinstein to debate.

Mark Standriff, the Communications Director for Elizabeth Emken got this shot today of The Official John and Ken Show's "Debate" with Senator Feinstein.

She was a no show so a press-board cut out was in her place. It's funny for sure but sad that DiFi doesn't feel the need to be accountable. ◼ h/t: Commonsense Conscience

Congressman Tom McClintock Backs Emken

Well-Known Conservative Joins Emken Team

(ORANGE COUNTY, CA) – Republican U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Emken, an accomplished businesswoman specializing in efficiency and cost-cutting, and nationally recognized advocate for autism research and treatment, today announced that U.S. Congressman Tom McClintock has officially endorsed her campaign for U.S. Senate.
Rep. McClintock adds his support to other influential members of California’s Republican congressional delegation, including House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, Darrell Issa, Howard “Buck” McKeon, Dan Lungren, Jeff Denham and John Campbell who are backing Emken in her bid to unseat Dianne Feinstein this November.

Congressman McClintock was elected in November 2008 to represent the 4th Congressional District in the United States Congress. During his 22 years in the California State Legislature, and as a candidate for governor in California’s historic recall election, Tom McClintock became one of the most recognizable political leaders in California and a leading conservative commentator. He has also written and lectured extensively on fiscal policy, bureaucratic reform and governmental streamlining.

“I can’t think of a better choice for California voters to help us bring down the overreach of federal government than Elizabeth Emken,” said Congressman McClintock. “Her background as a problem solver shows she knows how to reduce regulations and government waste, and her firm commitment to fighting Obamacare will give us an important voice for repeal and reform in the Senate.”

Emken has served as Vice President of Government Relations at Autism Speaks, the nation's largest science and advocacy organization devoted to the public health emergency of autism. Before becoming active with the autism issue, Elizabeth served as an efficiency and cost cutting expert at IBM, streamlining operations, eliminating waste and achieving multi-million dollar savings.

Elizabeth graduated from UCLA in 1984 with dual degrees in Economics and Political Science. Her studies also included course work at Cambridge University, where she focused on international political and economic issues throughout China and the Middle East.

Dianne Feinstein, (t)he head of the U.S. Senate’s Intelligence Committee said Wednesday that it appeared an intelligence mistake along with inadequate security were to blame for the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the American Embassy in Benghazi, Libya that claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens, a Bay Area native, and three others. - Phil Matier/CBS5 SF

“I can tell you this, I think we do know what happened now. There’s no question but that it was a terrorist attack, there is no question but that the security was inadequate and I think that there is no question that we need to work on our intelligence,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) during an exclusive interview with CBS 5.
