one of Islam's holiest sites

IS swiftly claimed responsibility in a statement posted online, saying the organization had targeted Shiites. The Associated Press could not verify the authenticity of the statement, but it was posted on a militant website commonly used by the extremists.

A second bombing early Sunday on another busy commercial street in a Shiite-dominated neighborhood, this one in east Baghdad, killed five people and wounded 16, authorities said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

A suicide bomber was intercepted by Saudi police outside the U.S. consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia early Monday morning and blew himself up after exchanging gunfire according to local reports. Monday the Fourth of July is Independence Day in the United States marking the July 4, 1776 Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. The attack also took place in the latter days of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in which Muslim terrorists have killed and wounded thousands of victims in worldwide attacks.
