Occidental students confront a reality of political campaigns: defeat

For a semester, Occidental students spent 12-hour days campaigning for candidates -- and lost - Jason Song/LA Times

The midterm elections were over. The 11 campaign workers from Occidental College returned to class. But first, they heard from a school reverend.

"You win some, you lose some," Susan Young told the group. It's perfectly OK, she said, to have trouble readjusting to college life or to feel out of place.

In what is believed to be the only college program of its kind, the undergraduates in the Campaign Semester course spent at least 2 1/2 months, often seven days a week, 12 hours a day, working on behalf of candidates in contested states.

None won.

Many were resoundingly defeated, although two students worked for the reelection campaign of Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, who is in a runoff. All of the students worked for Democratic candidates; Republicans swept the mid-terms and took control of the House and Senate....

NPR poll of 2014 battleground states is disastrous for Dems - CainTV

...President Obama is underwater 38 to 58 among overall voters, but the real news here is just how badly he's faring with Independents. There, he's enduring a crushing 30 point deficit - 33 to 63.

Perhaps as a result of Obama's unpopularity, the Democrats are in trouble on the generic ballot....

Apparently, the spectacular successes of 5 consecutive "recovery summers" were just not enough to sell the American people on Democrat policies. Go figure. Here, the GOP holds a 10% overall lead, including a whopping 20% among independents....Read it all, at the link.

CNN poll of 15 battleground states: Romney currently has a 51%-43% advantage over the president among registered voters

A rare case in which a news outlet actually tries to undermine its own poll by pointing out problems in its methodology. - Allahpundit/HotAir

...If Romney’s lead across swing states is approaching double digits then I’m pretty sure he’s not sweating over Obama’s “home turf,” especially since polls of registered voters tend to underestimate actual Republican strength on election day....

CNN Poll: Health care ruling has not impacted race for White House, so far - CNN

Thursday's landmark Supreme Court decision upholding the country's health care law appears to have had exactly zero impact on the presidential election so far, and has produced virtually no change in opinions on President Barack Obama or Republican challenger Mitt Romney, according to a new national poll.

And while the CNN/ORC International survey released Monday indicates the president with a very slight three point edge over Romney among registered voters nationwide, the presumptive GOP nominee appears to hold an eight point advantage among voters who live in the 15 states considered in play in the race for the White House.

Warning signs for Obama on path to electoral votes - AP

Obama's new worries about North Carolina and Wisconsin offer opportunities for Republican Mitt Romney, who must peel off states Obama won in 2008 if he's to cobble together the 270 electoral votes needed to oust the incumbent in November.

Iowa, which kicked off the campaign in January, is now expected to be tight to the finish, while New Mexico, thought early to be pivotal, seems to be drifting into Democratic territory.

If the election were today, Obama would likely win 247 electoral votes to Romney's 206, according to an Associated Press analysis of polls, ad spending and key developments in states, along with interviews with more than a dozen Republican and Democratic strategists both inside and outside of the two campaigns....

Romney has only been airing ads for two weeks in four states. But super PACs that support him have helped shave Obama's advertising edge, airing $10 million in ads across 10 states.

Obama aides point to an edge in state-by-state organizing that could be the deciding factor in a close election. While Romney is quickly arranging with the Republican National Committee to deploy staff to various battlegrounds, Obama's campaign has been up and running for years.
