On this day in history, March 31, 1888, Republican civil rights activist Frederick Douglass delivered a speech before the International Council of Women in Washington, D.C.

During his speech Douglass said "When a great truth gets abroad into the world, no power on earth can imprison or suppress it...such is the truth of a woman's right to equal liberty with a man...now that it is fixed in the minds of a few...it is bound to be fixed in the minds of many." - ◼ Refounders
