Dr. McCrone is the immediate past President and Professor of Geology at Humboldt State University (1974 to 2002), and has been widely recognized for his research and contributions in the field of geology.
He started his career as a well site geologist with the British American Oil company, and then became field geologist and Field Party Chief with Shell Oil Company in northwestern Canada. His
numerous awards and recognitions have included presiding over the New York University Chapter of Sigma Xi, the science honorary association; the 2000 Erasmus Haworth Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Kansas, and the Golden Dozen Award from Humboldt State University.
In his retirement Dr. McCrone continues as an active member of science-related and civic organizations. He reads avidly especially matters relating to his field of expertise, and history. He enjoys playing golf. Dr McCrone’s wife, Judith, is a member of ERWF. Their three adult children, two sons and a daughter, and their four grandchildren all reside in Seattle.

President’s Message March 2005
FREEDOM! Over the course of the first two months of this new year, I was reminded in so many ways of our blessings of freedom - on the faces of our brave young troops defending our freedom and security, in the emotional, first-hand account of growing up in Saddam Hussein's regime by our January guest speaker Mr. Haider Ajina, in the smiles of Iraqis as they voted in their first real election in half a century, in the school children's celebrations of Lincoln's and Washington's birthdays with construction paper hats and cotton ball beards, and in the fact that anyone can still say anything in America without fear of being jailed or literally losing their head. As an educator, the abuse of this last one hits close to home. The pseudo Native American
professor from Colorado has the protected freedom to spew his insidious venom wherever people are dumb enough to buy it. One of my heroes, Ronald Reagan, described this particular freedom thirty-two years ago on February 13, 1973, when he said, "Freedom should be the right to be stupid if you want to be."
We must never take for granted the most basic of blessings we have inherited as Americans, FREEDOM! It is not free. It was and is being earned for us by three centuries of young Americans willing to put themselves in harm's way for us. Please, please, don't ever take this blessing for granted. Stand up when our leaders are degraded for having the strength of character to do what is right, instead of doing what is popular. Politely, but firmly correct the misguided when they publicly or privately state something that you know is not true. Teach your children our true history. Do not blindly rely on our public school system to do it. As a teacher, I know this one inside out. I must look long and hard to find accurate material to use with my students, and most often I create my own. Sadly, because of time restraints and perhaps just not knowing any better, most teachers, I believe, rely on the politically (in) correct version that has infiltrated most of our public school textbooks and the minds of many in authority. When your child comes home with some outrageous statement about our country or leaders, find out the source (textbook, misguided teacher, etc.) and address it. If you don't, who will? All great worthwhile movements started with one, then a few, and finally many doing the right thing. In the children's story, the Little Red Hen (do you think it was any accident that she was Red?) and her little (Republican?) chicks worked hard for the food (substitute
"freedom") while the lazy Dog, Pig, and Cat (feel free to substitute any Blues that come to mind, except Zel Miller, or any Greens), wanted the food (substitute "freedom"), but were just too lazy to work for it! ... Be a Little Red Hen! She's overworked and could use your help! There are enough (substitute "too many") Blue and Green Dogs, Pigs, and Cats!
And be ever mindful - "The only force powerful enough to stop the rise of tyranny and terror, and replace hatred with hope, is the force of human freedom."

LEGISLATION ALERT - February 2005
PROBLEM: We have learned recently, Congressman Mike Thompson with the support of Senators Boxer and Feinstein, has introduced House Resolution 233, the so-called “Northern California Wildneress Act”. This would restrict public access to thousands of acres of public lands in Northern California. It would increase wilderness acreage in Del Norte and Siskiyou Counties by 39,000 acres.
This area already has 152,000 acres of public land under lock and key. Opposing this extraordinarily harmful measure is Republican State Senator Aanestad. Mr. Aanestad represents this area. The Senator has forwarded a letter of opposition to Republican Congressman Richard Pombo, Chairman of the House Resource Committee. Mr. Pombo is Republican State Senator Aanestad, who represents this area.
SUGGESTED ACTION: Express your opposition by contacting Congressman Thompson and Senators Boxer and Feinstein. Also express your concerns to Congressman Pombo at r.pombo@mail.house.gov.
RESIGNATION: John Danforth, US Ambassador to the United Nations, is resigning and there is an organization pushing for the selection of magazine editor and conservative icon, Steve Forbes. The organization “Move America Forward”, wants someone to represent the US at the UN who is smart, tough, and not afraid to fight the Anti-American zealots at the UN. I personally spent time with and was on the payroll of Mr. Forbes during his Presidential bid and cannot think of a better choice. He is a brilliant man who loves America and would be an outstanding person reresenting us at the UN. To get an idea of how M r. Humboldt Republican Women Federated welcomes Lori Metheny
Lori Ann Metheny is the new chairman of the Humboldt County Republican Central Committee. Prior
to relocating to Humboldt County, she served as Chairman of the Tehama County Republican Central
Committee (2000 to 2003).
Lori Ann Metheny has worked actively on many local, state and federal campaigns and attended the
swearing-in and inaugural ceremonies of George W. Bush in 2001 and again in 2005.
With experience in corporate administration, fiscal planning, and human resources management,
Metheny has taught as an adjunct faculty member for Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Community College. She
also managed the American Red Cross in Tehama County as their Chief Executive Officer.
She has been an active community member and brings a wealth of experience to her new area.
Lori Metheny lives in Arcata, is married to Mitch Metheny, and has two children

As I considered ideas for this month’s message, one theme kept presenting itself.
Everywhere I looked or listened, there it was, being abused. Senators Kennedy, Pelosi, and Byrd disgraced themselves shamefully with their lack of it d uring Dr. Rice’s confirmation hearing. The so-called “main stream med ia” likewise demonstrated their utter disregard for it leading up to, and after, the historic elections in Iraq. And as I graded final assignments and completed first semester report cards, it was painfully missing for some of my students.
On the other hand, the rest of my students were right on target. Many commentators on Fox News exhibited a healthy respect for it during and after the Iraqi election. And the doom and gloom whiners in Congress were outshined by others who respect this most valuable of traits. Have you guessed what it is?....... It is PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY! Isn’t it time we all stood up for it and confronted the abuse of it at every turn? No longer should we remain quiet. OUR man is in the White House and the hearts and minds of most, yes, most Americans, agree with him. President Bush, just like President Reagan before him, is making tough decisions to make our nation and world safer, restore common sense and decency throughout our land. As knowledgeable Republicans, it is our personal responsibility to share our message with those who are yet uninformed. Can we do it in a blue county in a blue state? Yes, we can! And if we succeed, history will be a more pleasant subject to teach in the future!

2005 Republican Freedom Calendar
In commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Republican Party, the Republican Policy Committee has produced the 2005 Republican Freedom Calendar, to put some of the many important Republican achievements in advancing civil rights before today's students, families, and citizens from all walks of life who wish to be better informed about our national heritage.
The history of our party is as remarkable as it is untold. And it is under-appreciated for that reason. In 1854, anti-slavery activists organized themselves into a new political party, the Republican Party, which would eventually become the mightiest force for individual liberty in the history of the world. Within just a few years, Republicans would control both Houses of Congress, a majority of U.S. state governorships and legislatures, and the White House.
The Republican Party became the most effective political organization in the history of the world in advancing the cause of freedom by staying true to its founding principles. The mission that President Lincoln described for our party, “to lift the artificial weights from all shoulders and clear the paths of laudable pursuit for all,” remains our central focus today.
We started our party with the express intent of protecting the American people from the Democrats’ pro-slavery policies that expressly made people inferior to the state. Today, the animating spirit of the Republican Party is exactly the same as it was then: free people, free minds, free markets, free expression, and unlimited individual opportunity.

"Celebrating a century and a half of civil rights achievement by the Party of Lincoln," proclaims its cover, which features a large image of the 16th president.
Each date contains a blurb linking the GOP to advances in civil rights. On March 18, for instance, the calendar notes that in 1877, Republican President Rutherford B. Hayes appointed the abolitionist Douglass to be a U.S. marshal.
