White House mistakenly outs CIA chief in Afghanistan

◼ The CIA’s top officer in Kabul was exposed Saturday by the White House when his name was inadvertently included on a list provided to news organizations of senior U.S. officials participating in President Obama’s surprise visit with U.S. troops. - Washington Post

The White House recognized the mistake and quickly issued a revised list that did not include the individual, who had been identified on the initial release as the “Chief of Station” in Kabul, a designation used by the CIA for its highest-ranking spy in a country....

The CIA officer was one of 15 senior U.S. officials identified as taking part in a military briefing for Obama at Bagram air base, a sprawling military compound north of Kabul. Others included U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan James B. Cunningham and Marine Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., the commander of U.S. and coalition forces in the country.

Their names were included on a list of participants in the briefing provided by U.S. military officials to the White House press office.

The only other recent case came under significantly different circumstances, when former CIA operative Valerie Plame was exposed as officials of the George W. Bush administration sought to discredit her husband, a former ambassador and fierce critic of the decision to invade Iraq.

Valerie Plame was exposed. Nice use of the passive voice there by The Washington Post! As the top comment over there says:

So... Bush never actually outed a CIA agent — Richard Armitage did — but that didn't stop the Left from engaging in a two year witchhunt. But Obama can out CIA agents with impunity, I guess, no investigation required?

RON NEHRING ENDORSED BY HUMBOLDT REPUBLICAN PARTY

At its May 6 meeting, the Humboldt County Republican Central Committee unanimously endorsed Ron Nehring for Lieutenant Governor in the June 3 primary election.

In his campaign Nehring has been endorsed by 24 Republican county central committees, the California Republican Assembly, the California Young Republican Federation, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, Republican Assembly Leader Connie Conway and several other legislators.

About his vision for the Lieutenant Governor’s office, Nehring says, “It is what the holder makes of it. Gavin Newsom uses it as a taxpayer-funded gubernatorial exploratory committee for 2018. I believe it should be a platform to develop and advocate for the bold reforms California needs to restore the state’s competitiveness: in taxes, pensions and education.”

Nehring was twice elected chairman of the California Republican Party (2007-11), served on the board of trustees of San Diego County’s Grossmont Union High School District, one of the largest in the state, and was appointed by Governor Schwarzengegger to the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection.

We’ve reached the point of Benghazi saturation where politically motivated government censorship is just a footnote to the who-knew-what-and-when debate.

Asked about the document, a senior White House official told ABC News it demonstrates that the White House genuinely believed the video sparked the attack all along, a belief that turned out to be incorrect.

“We actually think this proves what we’ve said. We were concerned about the video, given all the protests in region,” the official said. And the intelligence community “was also concerned about the video.”
Issa has an entirely different view. He contends the document contradicts the White House assertion that it was the CIA who first pinned blame for the attack on protests in response to the anti-Islamic video.

Elliot Rodger, the suspect in a rampage near UC Santa Barbara, outlined his intentions in a 137-page document that he sent Friday night, shortly before the killings, to someone he knew from an online body building forum.

The document was forwarded to KEYT-TV Channel 3 in Santa Barbara, which provided a copy to The Times.
