State Republicans flex for reforms; GOP outlines agenda, jury out on how they played their hand
When state budget talks collapsed last week, Sacramento devolved into a familiar session of partisan finger pointing....
The article is written by Thadeus Greenson for The Times-Standard.
Thadeus Greenson can be reached at 441-0509 or tgreenson@times-standard.com.

More in Thaddeus' series:
Does opportunity await in budget crisis?
”We're trying to be a high-service or a mid-service state, and we're trying to do it as a low-tax state,” he said. “That doesn't add up well.”
Facing all-cuts budget, local reps blast Republicans; Evans on balancing budget: 'It's going to be very, very difficult'
On Friday, Republican legislators released what they deemed a “list of requests” that spanned six pages and covered diverse topics ranging from things like wholesale pension reform and putting a cap on state spending to changing the California Environmental Quality Act and moving the state's presidential primary up to March.

Hillary voters aren't only willing to pull the plug on their fellow Democrats -– they're willing to yank it like they're starting a lawn mower.

John Phillips: Why Hillary Clinton must run in 2012 - latimesblogs
Hillary voters weren't swooned by Obama in the 2008 Democratic primaries and many are abandoning him in public opinion surveys today. But are they mad enough to ride the elephant in 2012?

Get out the saddle, because that's exactly what they did in 2010.

In the midterm elections, while it's true the Democrats were routed everywhere, they got especially creamed in states where Hillary did well. In House races, the Democrats lost four seats in Florida, six in New York, five in Ohio, four in Pennsylvania and three in Texas –- all states Hillary carried in the 2008 Democratic primaries.

Meanwhile, the Democrats strengthened their hand in places that went heavily for Obama in 2008 –- with pickups in Hawaii, Delaware and the MSNBC prime-time lineup.

The lesson: Hillary voters aren't only willing to pull the plug on their fellow Democrats -– they're willing to yank it like they're starting a lawn mower.

GOP budget plan to cut more than $4 trillion

GOP budget plan to cut more than $4 trillion

"By cutting spending, reforming entitlements and growing our economy"

Rasmussen poll shows no bump for Obama on national security

◼ Ed Morrissey at HotAir reports: Before Barack Obama gave his speech on Monday explaining his decision to attack Libya, he already had trouble with voters on national security in Rasmussen’s polling, scoring only a 43% approval on the issue against 37% who rated him as poor. Obama’s speech had an impact, but not the one he’d hoped, and not just on national security...

The survey asked voters to rate Obama on two issues — national security and the economy — and he did best on national security. On the economy, his approval rating is 34/66, while he gets a barely-better 37/62 on national security.

Let’s take a quick look at the internals. The only demos Obama wins on the economy are black voters (88/11), Democrats (just 65%m with 35% disapproving), self-described liberals (77/22) and those unsure of their ideology (56/45), and those earning under $20K (57/44). He wins the same demos for national security, but adds only 40-49YOs (50/49).

Who does that leave out? Notably, independents are deeply dissatisfied on both issues, rating Obama 21/78 on the economy and 27/71 on national security. Self-described moderates are also seriously disaffected, 36/63 on the economy and 41/58 on national security. Women are just as unhappy on both issues, 34/64 on the economy and 40/59 on national security.

Young people, the enthusiastic base for Obama’s 2008 grassroots rise, are downright disillusioned, rating him 44/53 on the economy and a catastrophic 36/62 on national security. It’s worth noting that only 8% of 18-29YOs rate Obama as “excellent” on national security, while 44% rate him as “poor.” That’s the worst rating among all age demos; he only gets significantly worse ratings from Republicans (62%), self-described conservatives (54%), and people earning between $75-100K per year (57%).

Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann top Mitt Romney in fundraising

Michele Bachmann tops Mitt Romney in fundraising - Politico
Michele Bachmann became the queen of 2011 fundraising this quarter, bringing in a combined $2.2 million for the quarter – bigger than the $1.9 million that frontrunner Mitt Romney reported bringing in, officials confirmed for POLITICO.

Bachmann raised $1.7 million for her congressional committee, and another $500,000 for her leadership PAC, Bachmann adviser Andy Parrish said.

he numbers are sure to roil the early presidential-watching, as the Minnesota congresswoman gears up for a likely run for the White House in 2012.

Much of her donations are reportedly small checks.
Exclusive: Ron Paul's $3M pot of gold
Ron Paul raked in roughly $3 million during the first quarter through his various political organizations, POLITICO has learned.

Though not all of that money can be transferred to a potential presidential campaign, the big haul demonstrates Paul’s continuing force as a grassroots-powered online fundraiser.

The Texas congressman raised $1 million through his federal PAC and $2 million through Campaign for Liberty, a 501C(4) which cannot transfer funds directly to political organizations. Paul’s fundraising documents, to be filed later Thursday with the FEC, will also show he has $1.7 million on hand in his congressional campaign account.

“Dr. Paul's fundraising comes almost exclusively from individuals, not special interests,” LibertyPAC director Jesse Benton told POLITICO. “He received contributions from all 50 states, and his average gift this quarter was under $70, demonstrating his broad grassroots support.

“Dr. Paul's grassroots fundraising prowess is unmatched, and any 2012 political endeavor on which he embarks will have the financial backing it takes to win,” Benton added.

Obama is expected to raise a billion for his re-election campaign.

Uncovered: New $2 billion bailout in Obamacare

Uncovered: New $2 billion bailout in Obamacare
- ByronYork/Washington Examiner (◼ @ByronYork)
Investigators for the House Energy and Commerce Committee have discovered that a little-known provision in the national health care law has allowed the federal government to pay nearly $2 billion to unions, state public employee systems, and big corporations to subsidize health coverage costs for early retirees. At the current rate of payment, the $5 billion appropriated for the program could be exhausted well before it is set to expire.

...The program began making payouts on June 1, 2010. Between that date and the end of 2010, it paid out about $535 million dollars. But according to the new report, the rate of spending has since increased dramatically, to about $1.3 billion just for the first two and a half months of this year. At that rate, it could burn through the entire $5 billion appropriation as early as 2012.

...the biggest single recipient of an early-retiree bailout is the United Auto Workers, which has so far received $206,798,086. Other big recipients include AT&T, which received $140,022,949, and Verizon, which received $91,702,538. General Electric, in the news recently for not paying any U.S. taxes last year, received $36,607,818. General Motors, recipient of a massive government bailout, received $19,002,669.

The program also paid large sums of money to state governments. The Public Employees Retirement System of Ohio received $70,557,764; the Teacher Retirement System of Texas received $68,074,118; the California Public Employees Retirement System, or CalPERS, received $57,834,267; the Georgia Department of Community Health received $57,936,127; and the state of New York received $47,869,044. Other states received lesser but still substantial sums.

But payments to individual states were dwarfed by the payout to the auto workers union, which received more than the states of New York, California, and Texas combined. Other unions also received government funds, including the United Food and Commercial Workers, the United Mine Workers, and the Teamsters....
